Here are the 2023 latest decorating trends to love or hate…you decide. Trends can be entertaining to watch. They take a little time to evolve so some trends mentioned last year are taking hold and are still around.
This will highlight my observations such as the 2023 paint colors of the year, rooms with personality coming in strong, front porches being high in Pinterest searches, wallpapered powder rooms being all the rage, the “fifth wall” getting addressed, and the return of the dining room.
Today, we have some of the best interior designers gathered to see what they predict, too. Their links are at the end of the post.
2023 Paint Color Interior Design Trends
Last year was all about green, and this year we have warm neutrals and shades of dark pink like raspberry and magenta.

I like the idea of Valspar’s Ivory Brown and Behr’s Blank Canvas on cabinetry. Dark pink is pretty as an accent.
Pantone’s color of the year is:

PANTONE 18-1750 Viva Magenta. How do you feel about this? Would you use it on walls?

Interiors with personality and character like “The Collected Look” is fortunately in!

According to Pinterest Predicts Trends: “In 2023, people will find new ways to honor old things in their homes. People are combining vintage—often inherited—pieces with their modern styles. Thanks to the Boomers and Gen X driving these trends, antiques have never looked so chic.”

Front Entrances and Porches Taking Stage

Pinterest says searches for front entrances have dramatically increased.
“The back garden is your trusty fallback— but in 2023, all eyes will be on the front-of-house! Rising searches suggest that Boomers and Gen X will be pampering their porches and dolling up their doorways.”

This is Howard’s favorite place to read in the Polywood modern rockers.
Wallpaper In Powder Rooms
This is a fun place to add wallpaper. Did you know that wallpaper isn’t as hard to remove as it was years ago? Especially if you prime the base and use strippable paper.
Decorating Trends: The Statement Ceiling
Addressing the ceiling (and not with plain white) is gaining in popularity again.

The Return Of The Dining Room But Less Formal
All-matching dining room sets are not so cool anymore, although a dedicated room for dining is coming back.

Hello and just discovered this site and find it so lovely. I struggle with how to use my older pieces without the house looking like an antique shop and of course choosing paint color from gray to lighter. I hope I find inspiration on your site. If you can suggest anything please let me know. Thanks.
Look for a less gray paint like BM White Dove or Simply White. Keep the antiques but update with fresh pillows and declutter! Good luck, Ronnie.
Mary Ann,
It’s nice to know some of the “trends” are some of my favorite ways to decorate. I don’t follow trends to the letter and ignore them when I love something in my house that I’m not willing to change. 😊
Your new home is lovely.
Karen B.
You are right… I saw so many painted and wallpaper ceilings in the show houses over the holidays! As they say it is the fifth wall right! Anyway, thank you so much for inviting me to tagalong on this great post I’m trying to get back to blogging regularly although nobody gets to read it anymore because Blogger doesn’t send it out ha ha
I want to help you switch to WordPress, Sherry!!
Love, love, love your green dining room! And the wallpaper with greenery on the bedroom ceiling. The panettone color of the year is beautiful, but is not a color I can use in my home. I would have to completely redecorate, and that’s not going to happen!
Me too…about the Pantone color…except for flowers!
Great article! I’m looking to doing a painted ceiling in our guest bedroom & this confirms my decision to go bold! Thank you
Absolutely, Jess!
SO glad that many of the trends you discuss are things we chose to do in the home we built from 2015-2019 (yes, too bloody long so glad they aren’t dated yet ;-}
YES to exciting wallpaper in our powder room, YES to a dining room with large doorways, mixed table/chairs and a dramatic ceiling.
If we move again, I may return to the PRACTICAL 3-wall tub/shower but go with a luxurious larger, deeper, contoured tub. It isn’t glamorous like a freestanding tub w/ separate shower, but it is the most practical for daily life: a quick squeegee of the upper walls, wipe the sill and you are done. We did a doorless large shower in our current bath, and it requires a good bit of wiping bc of its size. And squeegeeing & wiping glass walls is the most involved — or am I missing something?!
Love your foyer and dining room, Mary Ann!
Joan…lots to consider there. We want to update our bathroom…but that may be a while.
Mary Ann,
I love your observations on trends! I agree that using antiques with modern is really having a moment that has lasting value because it’s using what you love but making it more your own personal style. I love your “casual” dining room. Everything from the color to the art, furniture, and light fixture is so pretty! And the porch…we live out on ours about six months of the year!
xx
Love this post, MaryAnn! And the pics of your home are lovely. That front porch….I’d sit out there all day. Love your dining room too. Thanks for linking me in here. 🙂 I always love talking trends with you guys.
My mother’s strict rule in her household and clothing was no green, gray, black, or brown. I stick to those rules also. Not flattering to our complexions. That said, I would put out one or two small decor pieces in one of those colors but never paint on a wall. Yep, you might find the dreaded periwinkle in my house but never ever gray. That Sherwin Williams Redend Point is…well…brown. Shiver.
Really? What about green plants and mahogany or pine furniture, Deb?
Hi Mary Ann
Great examples of new trends to think about. Your green dining room is just perfect. I like that it brings the outside in. Your foyer is perfect too. You have done such a good job with your new home. I can’t wait to see it in person one day!
You and Cindy are always on trend with your finds…especially since most of them start on the West coast:) I totally forgot about the curve in furniture which is really making a comeback for sure…..and I am loving the greens….although I can’t really find a client who will let me do it!
Hi Mary Ann,
Well I guess I was ahead of the game because I had the interior of our house painted the palest yummiest green called “Cashmere Grey” when we rebuilt. The color changes and softens throughout the day. I love it with the wood floors and white trim,, and with all our windows it brings the outdoors in. We had a gently curved sofa in the rental house during construction, it was surprisingly comfortable and added a little something extra to a room full of hard angles.
I love periwinkle, in flowers or in a painting or as a small accent somewhere, maybe in a patterned cushion? But I can’t imagine that color in large swatches!
Great post and lots to think about, thanks Mary Ann!
Xo Heidi
Beautiful examples. I bought a swivel rocker with a curved back early in the pandemic and I love it so much. My granddaughters give each other rides in it too. That was one of the reasons I wanted the swivel feature because I knew it would create fun memories. I sent the photo of our Boston, hope you got it!
Super fun post Mary Ann, I loved all the arches and especially the kitchen with the curved inset and pretty tiles. i think the periwinkle color is not something I’d use anywhere, but I do like the greens, especially the Behr one! It’s lovely. The wet rooms seem cool, but I stayed in a beautiful hotel with one and it’s hard not to get everything wet. I prefer a glass wall at least between them, and then it’s still open. The curved furniture looks always inviting to me. My grandma had a large curved cantaloupe colored sofa in the 60’s and I loved it! xo
Absolutely love arches … especially over a range and framing a free standing tub. We considered a ‘wet room’ for our main bath. Our contractor thought I was crazy. No, not crazy, just ahead of the trend. It’s wonderful seeing all the beautiful green tones as well … I’m pro green. Pantone’s color of the year does read hydrangea. It’s beautiful but very bold. Thanks for the update. It’s never too early to start planning Snowberry’s next refresh! xo
Love the green color tones the paint companies picked this year too. Looks like we are on the same page with curvy furniture! It’s so fun to see what everyone picks as stand out trends. Love being part of this group, Mary Ann. Thank you!
Love your observations, Carla!
Happy New Year, Mary Ann,
Early summer, we will be moving to a two bedroom retirement condo in a lovely three level care facility. Consequently, I’m diligently researching options and your division of 2022 TRENDS created delightful browsing. I particularly like the green wall colors because I’m guessing they create gorgeous neutral backgrounds. I absolutely love the terra cotta tile. Curved swivel chairs are now on my consideration list.
Thank you for introducing trends which reflect chic transitional options,
Diney on Camano Island
That’s exciting, Diane…a fresh start.
I love the curved chairs but sofas not so much, which I have heard are not comfortable to sit on because of the curved back. Too trendy as well…I guess if you have the $ to switch it out when it gets outdated lol. I am so so on green, it depends on the shade and how it is used. (the Veranda photo is too “grandma” for my taste) I think green walls that have molding or some architectural design can look amazing. The Pantone color…just no. But again I guess it would be how you use it. Agree it would need to be a small space.
Linda
I’m not wild about curved sofa (chairs yes) or the Pantone color either, Linda.
Mary Ann,
Love this series of post! I am not a gan of the green, we just moved into a house that had very similar colors to that everywhere. As for the purple Panetone…NO!
Love the curved chairs and the swivel furniture. That is something I think it timeless. 33 years ago a designer that my mother used in her renovation suggested curved dark blue leather chairs with swivels, she still uses them today.
Thanks for sharing your beautiful images, suggestions and interior design expertise.
Your mom’s swivel chairs sound amazing, Elizabeth!
This was such a fun post. I clicked on over to the other designers and was especially smitten with all of Joni Webb’s photos. I have never given up my love of Charles Faudree and am so glad at least some of his style is making a comeback.
Pretty is back…yay!
We bought a 23 year old CA house last year with gorgeous arched wall openings. I didn’t know they were trending when we purchased our house but I’m in love with them. They add so much architectural interest.
What a great house, Lisa!
Mary Ann! I totally forgot to talk about curves…You’re spot on! Curvy furniture, arches, and even curvy pools. We went from straight lines to curves. And I have to say I am really drawn to it! I’ve always loved an arch doorway and doors. The kidney-shaped pool was so out and now it’s back! I think we all can appreciate what we have more when we see it in a new fresh light. Makes me want to buy a 1970s ranch with a pool to see what I can do with it! I can tell you one thing though…I would not be using periwinkle paint!
Ha…I wholeheartedly agree, Annie.
This was a fabulous article Mary Ann. I love how you broke down the trends you have observed room by room sharing what you have seen. I am not a huge fan of curved sofas but love the Crate and Barrel chairs! I love the green trend as well. To me it is a neutral. Unless you live in S,F!!
I feel the same about curved sofas, Cindy.
The one trend I would not jump on is the tub in the shower enclosures. While pretty for pictures, absolutely not practical. Every time you shower you will need to wipe down the tub, too.
I’ve had this configuration in hotels and in homes we are looking at for a second home. I like it.
