Subtle Ways To Transition Your Decor to Fall And More

Here are subtle ways to transition your decor to Fall, on your coffee table, in your kitchen and entry. Also there are examples of using new warm colors like plum and brown in a home in Nova Scotia. And a flavorful ginger-scented chicken meatball soup that my buddy, Mercedes made recently!

It’s Five Faves time with Annie and Cindy.

Subtle Ways To Transition Your Decor To Fall

The leaves are falling and it’s just gotten cooler here in Florida. Since we are home for a while now and settling in, I was inspired to begin the decorating transition to Autumn.

Coffee Table Changes For Early Fall Decorating

On the left is the way our coffee table looked for most on the Summer. I added darker elements and a fresh flower arrangement from Olive & Cocoa (a great source for sending gifts) for Autumn.

The burnt orange colored candles are from Studio McGee for Target.

Kitchen Fall Home Decor

Our kitchen feels warmer with a washable rug and my favorite Staub pumpkin Dutch oven pot (on sale!) is back (we use it a lot and it would be good for the soup recipe in this post).

I am thinking, perhaps a fall wreath would be nice on the stove hood.

Foyer Fall Decor

We put the wicker bench in here and added pillow covers with black velvet and orange and pink tones. The dark wool rug adds comfort as you enter here from the front porch.

A Home With Ambiance And Character Using Plum, Ochre And Brown Shades

How do you feel about…

I wasn’t exactly on board until I saw this home on my Apple news feed. It is in the recent edition of Canadian House And Home. The use of a color palette with dusty plum, ochre, burgundy and brown along with vintage items is interesting and I think, pleasing.

This is a lovely warm focal point. The colors feel neutral but more saturated.

Design by Sappho Griffin and Photography by Stacey Brandford. The accessories add a layer of patina to the newly constructed home. That is a good looking frame on the television above the fireplace mantel.

Throw pillows, throw blankets, rugs and a vintage crock collection create a cozy Fall mood.

Love the warmth of the backsplash in the laundry room. The wicker texture on the lamp with the brass candlesticks and wooden bucket on the console table looks beautiful. This is inspiration for some decor ideas on our dining table for the Fall.

Since it’s so hard to get a print copy in the U.S. of House and Home, I just signed up for a subscription.

Chicken Meatball Soup With Thai Flavors

Mercedes made this one pot soup on a weeknight. It has ginger-scented chicken-cilantro meatballs that are browned, then simmered in a fragrant coconut milk broth. The recipe is from the New York Times by Ali Slagle. We loved it!

Even though Howard has a NY Times subscription, it was really difficult for me to log into it (they probably want it that way) so I finally bought my own digital subscription just for the recipes!

Thai Chicken Meatball Soup

Course Main Course

Ingredients

  • 1 4" piece  piece fresh ginger, peeled
  • 6 cloves garlic peeled
  • 1 jalapeno
  • 2 lbs ground chicken
  • 1 large bunch cilantro, leaves and stems finely chopped and a few leaves for serving
  • 3 tbs fish sauce
  • Kosher salt
  • 2 tbsp vegetable or coconut oil, plus more as needed
  • 2 cups chicken broth
  • 1 14 oz can full-fat coconut milk
  • 1/2 tsp granulated sugar
  • 5 oz baby spinach
  • 1 tbsp lime juice, plus lime wedges for serving
  • Steamed white or brown rice, for serving

Instructions

  • Using the small holes of a box grater, or a Microplane, grate the ginger, garlic and jalapeño (or finely chop them by hand). Transfer half to a large bowl and set the rest aside. To the large bowl, add the chicken, finely chopped cilantro, 2 tablespoons fish sauce and 1 teaspoon salt. Use your hands or a fork to fully combine but do not overmix.
  • Use your hands or an ice cream scoop to form 2-inch meatballs (about 2 ounces each). In a large Dutch oven or pot, heat the oil over medium-high heat. Working in batches, add the meatballs in a single layer and cook, flipping halfway through, until golden brown on two sides, 5 to 8 minutes. Transfer to a plate and repeat, adding oil as needed.
  • Once all the meatballs are browned and out of the pot, if the oil is burned, wipe it out and add a bit more to the pot. Reduce the heat to medium, add the reserved ginger mixture and sauté until fragrant, about 1 minute. Add the chicken broth, coconut milk, sugar and the remaining 1 tablespoon fish sauce, and bring to a simmer. Add the meatballs and any juices from the plate, and simmer until the flavors come together and the meatballs are cooked through, 5 to 8 minutes.
  • Remove from heat, and stir in the spinach and lime juice. Divide rice among bowls, then top with meatballs, broth and cilantro. Serve with lime wedges.

A Book For The Decor Lover

The Slow Down: For the Love of Home Hardcover – October 1, 2024 by Leanne Ford

My daughter gave me this book for my birthday. As I was reading it on a lazy, messy Sunday morning in our living room, it struck me that the room was still pretty in it’s undone state.

That is sort of the way Leanne likes things…lived in, not perfect or too structured. And her personality shines through in the book.

Bless you for copying the recipe. Nothing is more frustrating than clicking a link and they require you to sign up.

  2. Hi Mary Ann,
I am so glad that you only needed to sweep the porch after the hurricane. I was worried for you and your friends and family.
The beautiful book is gong on my wish list. The recipe sounds delicious! I subscribe to NYT and their recipes, the thing is I can never figure out how to quickly access my recipe box. But I have some good ones saved, and I’m sure this is one of them!
    Enjoy the fall.

    Mercedes soup looks delicious!
Love Leann Ford, did you see her new rental in RounTop? So fabulous.
    Love your fall touches.
    Have a wonderful week.

Mary Ann, you mentioned maybe putting a fall wreath on your stove hood. Mine looks a lot like yours but it is angled backwards and I’m not sure how a wreath would look like that. Couldn’t tell if your hood is also angled backwards???? In our former home, I use to put seasonal art on our stove hood all the time but this angled hood in our new home is a challenge for me. Can’t wait to try the soup – it has all my favorite and “always in the pantry or fridge” ingredients – thanks for sharing!!

      1. Hi, Mary Ann… enjoyed your post…always do! Soup looks fab! FYI, I subscribe to Apple News for $14.99 per month. It carries all the fabulous shelter and cooking magazines including European and English ones and this particular Canadian one…love it! It used to be the app called Texture then Apple bought them out. You can share with up to 5 family members. Check it out. 🙂 Karen @figcottagelife

        1. Hi Karen, We have Apple One for five family members…that’s where I saw this House And Home article. It’ includes Apple music and tv and is around $40/month.

Can’t wait to make this soup Mary Ann. Thank you!

  6. I haven’t made the soup yet, but saw that I had it saved in my New York Times Cooking account! I’ll make it this week.
I asked for a membership last Christmas. We do a family wide secret Santa exchange through the app “Elfster”. I highly recommend! It allows everyone to sign up, you can make sure spouses don’t get each other. You can set your price limit. Everyone makes a wishlist. Fun and easy!
Oh, Leanne Ford…I love her! Her TV series, with her brother was delightful. I like how they respected the history of each house, and the owners wishes. Every house ended up different, rather than all looking rather generic.
