Why You Need Wicker Accents In Your Home Decor

July 21, 2024 By Mary Ann Pickett 25 Comments

Wicker accents in your home decor provide a fresh texture that can ground your space. From a simple vase in your living room to a porch full of rattan outdoor furniture, wicker can be the perfect home accessory. There are lots of reasons why interior designers love it.

Let me show you all the ways to bring this natural element to your décor. There are some affiliate links and I appreciate your support.

Annie and Cindy are also sharing their faves too!

Why We Love Wicker: It’s Not A Trend

Woven wicker has been used throughout history, This ancient weaving method using natural materials is probably why it feels grounding to us. It’s also lightweight but durable making it useful for furniture and accessories like storage baskets, trays and bowls.

“Wicker is a weaving technique and a term for products made using that technique, such as furniture and baskets. It’s one of the oldest known methods of furniture making, dating back to around 3000 BC.” ~Wikipedia

Wicker Is Used Around The Globe

It’s interesting to think how wicker products have been made around the world. Where I grew up in San Bernardino, California, my parents bought precious hand-woven native American baskets. I remember the skilled workmanship. Woven wicker is found in places like ancient Egypt, Europe, Asia and South America.

Wicker Home Accessories For Year Round

Notice how the wicker vase in this elegant living room by Paloma Contrera tames the formality? Here is a similar seagrass vessel (on sale – great as a vase or candle holder).

Wicker is not just for the summer months. Indoors, it enjoys its popularity all year round. This article Rooms With Wicker by House & Home has beautiful images of ways to use wicker.

Wicker Material Tabletop Home Accents

Unique woven hurricane candle covers, made in Colombia, bring texture to the dining room. I found them on Etsy.

Annie, my sister and I all have the wicker wrapped glasses. We love them as you can still grip them with condensation and you don’t need a coaster.

My sister informed me that you can find clear replacement glasses if you have broken yours at Crate and Barrel. So, I bought a few.

Modern Traditional Cane Dining Chairs

We upgraded the upholstery on the chair cushions in a performance fabric for stain-resistance. The lumbar pillow adds a little comfort. Here is the link to the chairs.

Wicker In Glass Cabinet

Wicker baskets on cabinet wall shelves create warmth and visual interest. These were from Target years ago. Here are similar ones.

Outdoor Patio Furniture

At this time last year, we purchased this neutral wicker furniture for outdoor use on clearance. It was at our local Home Depot. I don’t see it online.

So check your local stores for wicker chairs, sofas and coffee tables. Ours was delivered for free.

Wicker And Rattan Planters For Indoor Real and Faux Plants

Plants in baskets give a sophisticated Bohemian style vibe.

Rattan Chair For Desk Or Occasional Use

This is the perfect accent for my writing desk. It’s vintage. Occasional chairs like this one are great to hunt for in vintage and used furniture shops

Lighting Fixtures: Simple Pendant And Lamp Shade

This pendant lighting over our swing bed is a nice accent piece at night and during the day.

I added a raffia lamp shade from Target to a vintage brass table lamp for a new look. The heavy bamboo mirror is from Serena and Lily and the oval wicker box was found at a the Long Beach flea market.

Woven Wicker Bed Frame

This cane bed with headboard and footboard in our guest room has been so great, I’ve recommended it to clients.

What are the ways you have used to incorporate rattan and wicker into your living space?

Maryann, funny that I’m reading this now; I have my second cataract surgery tomorrow! I’m glad your second one went well. I’m hoping for the same. I was petrified for the first one, but it was quite easy, so at least tomorrow I know what to expect.
Love the wicker and rattan. If I lived in FL I’d have it everywhere. I’ve always lived in the NE, and have had some pieces in the past, but no more. It’s so pretty though. I love all the pictures in this post.

Hope it all went well, Nancy. Even when we lived in NY, I still had some wicker…like placemats.

Oh thanks, Rita. I always water them on Sundays and sometimes with plant fertilizer. But I think I am just lucky!

Also the eucalyptus tree in my bedroom and the ferns at the base of the fiddle leaf fig tree in the dining room are faux…but the rest are real.

Wonderful ideas and examples. I haven’t written about this because maybe it is just me and my phone. But many times when I click on links, It just sends me back to the top of your page. Have you heard of this?
I end up searching the product myself. Not sure why.
    Have a Great day.

I love velvet upholstery, so wicker helps to un-glam my decor a bit! We have had a wicker chaise longue and matching chair&footstool in our sun room since our first home 30 years ago, still going strong, rattan-back dining chairs (with custom multi-color velvet stripe cushions ;-} , and B/W French-style cane cafe chairs in our screened porch. The cafe chairs are so useful, given their light weight. Also taupe-brown faux wicker barstools at our kitchen island!

    Mary Ann,
All your wicker pieces are wonderful, excellent suggestions.
Yay, it’s such a wonderful feeling having your second cataract completed. Now for all the drops each day. Thank you for the reminder about looking away from your computer screen and phone to protect your eyes. I have struggled with bad dry eye since 2018, before my cataract surgery this year. I put warm wash cloth compresses on them. Also you can purchase “Bruder” to put on your eyes, warm up in your micro wave, find on Amazon. I’m sure your eye doctor is suggesting what is best for you. I finally found Refresh Optive Mega-3 Preserative-Free Lubricant Eye Drops this is the only one that has helped me, purchase on Amazon. Also I have a script from my eye doctor for Restasis, I use late in the evening. The other important thing that is a big help for dry eye is I’ve had lower plugs put in. The size is so important for a comfortable fit. Small is the only size that works for me. Sometimes they fall out, can last indefinitely. I don’t like the ones put on the top of the lids. Also since my cataract surgery in February and March my eyes are more sensitive to light.

Love all your wicker pieces! I recognize a couple that we have as well. I had my eye on some bar stools from Serena & Lily, as soon as they went on sale on snagged them. I have my eye on the PB wicker urn, there actually are a couple other online retailers that have it for less. I have found this to be true with some other items from PB, you just have to look.
