Hello! What is California Casual Design? It’s a cool decorating style that embraces light and uses neutrals, soft colors, comfortable furniture, and natural elements.
You know I like it and so does Sarah Ward. I spotted her designs on Instagram and asked her if I could feature her here.

“Sarah Ruth Interiors, Inc is a full-service Interior Design studio based in Southern California. Sarah Ward finds joy in creating comfortable, curated spaces with eclectic mixes of new and old.”

“Her inspiration pulls from the colors and textures of nature and coastal living, referencing life with her artist grandmother in Cambria, California as a young girl. “
Elements to Get California Casual Design
Here are the ways Sarah Ruth Interiors achieves this style (photos by Theresa Wooner Photography).
Light
Lots of natural light streams in from outside in addition to white painted walls.

Nature
Sarah uses natural wood elements on floors and cabinetry. There are also plants and branches to bring in nature.

Comfort
Soft furnishings encourage relaxing at home. Breathable fabrics like cotton and linen are used as well as Indian block prints.

Texture
Texture is present from baskets, natural fiber rugs and terracotta tiles.

Soft Colors and Neutrals
The colors are muted and as a result serene and soothing.

Those are ways to achieve the California casual look no matter where you live!

Thanks so much, Karen.
Sarah’s light and airy California style is so good. I’m really embracing the look of natural wood cabinetry. And I adore how she used a marble herringbone floor and wood cabinets in this bathroom. Just lovely! xo
Light, nature, comfort, texture, neutrals….so perfectly coastal! Love!
I love the hexagonal tiles that appear in a couple of pictures! Are the terra cotta or something similar? I’d love a link for those also if available…thank you!
Lovely photos! Is this all her home or homes she has done? Love the light and the mix of earthy and light and pretty elements.
Homes she has done, Kim.
Gorgeous!
Where can I find the gold sconces that are shown on either side of the free Standing tub?
