Easy Fall Succulent Arrangements To Make At Home

Easy Succulent Arrangements Inspired By My Trip To SoCal

Succulent arrangements are one of my favorite things to bring indoors this time of year. Set one by a sunny window and it will look good for months with very little care. They also make an easy gift. A pretty container and a few plants are all it takes.

I’m also sharing a good show on television (non-violent :), a denim outfit and more. It’s Sunday Faves time with Annie and Cindy.

Easy Fall Succulent Arrangements

On my recent trip to Southern California, I found plenty of inspiration in local shops. Here is what caught my eye.

Lone Fox, Los Angeles

Lone Fox is a newly opened store that I discovered on Instagram. It is full of beautiful pottery and homewares.

A low, wide ceramic bowl with a few stones tucked in feels almost like a tiny landscape.

The Well, Summerland

At The Well, the arrangements leaned natural and a little weathered. A rough stone trough topped with pebbles let a few blue-green echeveria shine.

Even a trio of little aged terracotta pots on a wood table looks collected and intentional.

Botanik, Summerland

Botanik had a lovely mix of terracotta in every shade. Some arrangements combined large silvery rosettes with a trailing green plant spilling over the edge.

The long planter with pink-tinged echeveria and cascading sedum was stunning, though the price tags got me wanting to make my own.

What I Noticed

Looking back at my photos, a few things repeat:

  • Shallow bowls and low planters show off the plants best.
  • Aged, matte, or earthy containers feel more relaxed.
  • Mixing a few rosette shapes and colors adds interest.
  • A trailing plant softens the edge of the container.
  • Top dressing with small stones or gravel finishes the look.

My Version Arrangement Mixing Target and Trader Joe’s Succulents

Back home, I made my own using a white ceramic $20 planter from Target. The succulents came from Target and Trader Joe’s. But if you have some growing in your garden like my daughter does in Los Angeles, they are so easy to propagate.

I placed a large dusty purple-gray echeveria off center, added a smaller dark rosette beside it, and let a trailing green sedum drape over the front. A spiky haworthia tucked in the back adds texture. I topped the soil with small stones.

The whole thing cost me about $35, a fraction of what the shop versions cost. It sits on my kitchen counter for now.

How To Make One

  1. Choose a container with a drainage hole, or add a layer of gravel in the bottom if it has none.
  2. Fill with cactus and succulent soil.
  3. Place your largest plant first, then fill in with smaller ones.
  4. Add a trailing plant near the edge.
  5. Top with small stones and water lightly.

Care Tips

Give your arrangement bright light, ideally a sunny window. Water only when the soil is dry, about every week or two. Succulents rot easily if they sit wet, so less is better. I also turn mine every so often so the plants grow evenly.

A New TV Show That Howard And I Both Like: Cupertino

Cupertino is a CBS (we are watching it on Paramount Plus) legal drama. Starring Mike Colter and Rachel Keller as ousted Silicon Valley attorneys, the series follows their underdog firm as they fight exploitative tech giants and artificial intelligence.

It gets 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. We are hooked and waiting for the next episode. So far, there have been three.

Kids’ Lightweight Down Puffer Vests For Autumn

I ordered these well-made vests by Quince for Louisa and Leo. They are easy to put on by themselves for an extra layer. The kids love them.

A couple of days ago, two-year-old Leo got his mom’s phone and handed it to her with the instruction: “Gramma.” So we Face-timed. I just saw them for my birthday but now Face-time will have to suffice until they get here in December.

Also, regarding family faves by Quince... the post I did recently had some broken links that are fixed now, so you may want to revisit for some great gift ideas.

I also love succulents as house plants. You can’t beat them for subtle color and texture. Great for those of us who travel for long periods of time. Speaking of travel, I just returned home last night from a cruise along the New England and Canadian coastline. We stopped in Halifax Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. It was glorious! It will be quite chilly there for southerners! You will love it.
