Condo Kitchen Makeover For Less Before + After
Today we are talking about tips for a Condo Kitchen Makeover For Less. Renovating a dated kitchen doesn’t have to break the bank. With planning and a bit of creativity, you can transform your space into a stylish and functional area that feels brand new.
Let me show you what we did for my sister’s condo in San Diego to make her kitchen fresher and more inviting without over spending.
And there is more like what to read and wear as it’s Sunday Faves time with Annie and Cindy.
Condo Kitchen Makeover For Less: Assessing the Challenges and Potential
Before diving into the renovation, it’s important to assess the existing kitchen. Here’s what we had…
- Not Preferred Cabinet Color
- Although not the the first choice, the granite countertops are real stone.
- Limited Lighting: Poorly lit spaces can make the kitchen feel smaller and less inviting.
- Cramped Layout the cabinetry in the galley feels “tunnel-like.”
- The Refrigerator is dated and sticks out into the space.
Understanding these challenges helps in formulating a clear kitchen remodel plan that addresses both aesthetics and functionality.

Budget-Friendly Strategies For Condo Kitchen Makeover
- Paint Power: One of the most cost-effective ways to breathe new life into any kitchen is through paint. Consider painting cabinet doors in a fresh color to brighten the space. The contractor (Galvan Fine Finish & Painting Inc. in San Diego County) professionally painted the kitchen cabinets . They removed the fronts and sanded and sprayed them in their warehouse using Sherwin Williams Acacia Haze.
- Cabinet Hardware: Cleaning and keeping the existing hardware saved money.
- Counter-depth stainless steel refrigerator is an upgrade.
- Freestanding Open Shelves: opens up the space and adds a pretty design element.
- Countertop: the existing countertop blends with the new paint color.
- Lighting Makeover: We added affordable updated sconces over the sink and open shelving but kept the existing flush mounts (which we may change out later on).
- Creative Backsplash tile: although relatively expensive for labor to install, the new less-expensive ceramic tile adds a fresh look with clean lines.
- Washable Rug Runner with Ruggable rug pad to tie in the colors and avoid replacing the flooring.

After implementing these budget-friendly strategies, we can step back and admire the complete transformation:

- Brighter, Airier Space: Lighter colored cabinets and updated lighting fixtures create an inviting atmosphere. Removing some upper cabinets on the right opens up the entrance and the shelves for dishes, cookbooks and decoration adds charm.
- Modern Touches: a contemporary backsplash adds style and personality.
- Enhanced Functionality: makes cooking and entertaining more enjoyable.

What To Wear That Feels Stylish But Cool And Comfortable
The weather in Florida is lovely now but it’s about to get steamy. Here are a couple of outfits that make my closet feel fresh and ready for summer.

embroidered linen blend peasant top (I sized down to an XS so I could tuck it in but it would be nice larger and untucked with white jeans) • Madewell white cotton skirt in small (versatile with other tops like a black tee and sandals)• wedge sandals (on sale)
J. Jill has so many pretty, colorful items out now for Summer! And pants and skirts are 30% off like the ones below.

linen top (lots of pretty colors) • tee shirt • linen cropped pants 30% off • sandals 60% off • necklace with silver and gold and sea glass beads I like that you can mix it with silver or gold.
What To Read And Not To Read
If I don’t recommend a book I don’t mention it here, except for today (below).
The Anxious Generation By Jonathan Haidt
At first I was skeptical about this book’s hype. But it is well researched and valuable for parents and anyone concerned about the mental health of young people.
The book argues that the increased use of smartphones and social media since around 2010 has significantly impacted youth mental health, leading to a rise in anxiety, and depression.
Not To Read In My Opinion: All Fours By Miranda July
I thought this would be good as the reviews said: ” a New York Times Top Ten Book Of The Year, a Washington Post Notable Book of the Year, Time Magazine’s Top 10 Fiction Book of the Year and.. named a best book of the year by: The New Yorker, Vogue, Financial Times, Oprah Daily” Whoa!
“Part absurd entertainment, part tender reinvention of the sexual, romantic, and domestic life of a forty-five-year-old female artist…”
But I thought it was trashy, depressing and I only read about 60% of it. It takes place in a part of Los Angeles that I am familiar with but it wasn’t even entertaining. I’m glad I didn’t finish it as Mercedes did and said it wasn’t worth it.

I haven’t read All Fours, but perhaps all the positive reviews affirm that we are not the target audience! I often find that so-called bestsellers, and books on Jenna’s and Reese’s list are not my favorites. I like a quieter book v. high drama. Currently enjoying “This is a Love Story”, by Jessica Soffer, which has an unusual style.
Also, too detailed sex scenes make me uncomfortable. Yes, we know how it works! Can we get back to the story, please? 🙂
Loved the kitchen remodel! Your sister will enjoy it for years. Thank you for the honest book review. I’m just about finished listening to The Chemist by Stephanie Meyer. It really has kept me listening! But I love thrillers and mysteries and some science fantasy. I agree that I don’t like trashy sex scenes in books. It is so unnecessary to a good story. I am also petite at 5’1” and 135-137 lbs. but you are thinner and can wear that adorable white skirt! I think I would not look good as my waist is slowly getting fluffy!
What a beautiful kitchen refresh – so very tranquil and inviting. I recently ‘won’ the same rattan covered glasses and pitcher in a silent auction and love them. Fun to see them on your sister’s shelves!
I have them too…love not having to use a coaster!
What a beautiful transformation of your sister’s kitchen! I love the wall print of lemons—is it shareable?
It’s a giclée of a painting by my cousin. I have one, too. Sorry it’s not available.
Theresa’s kitchen looks so amazing! I have also officially joined the DNF club when it comes to some of these “highly recommended bestsellers”. I wait for weeks sometimes for books to become available on the Libby app but not going to waste time on smut. Recently enjoyed The Stationery Shop by Marian Kamali
Happy Sunday!
Thanks, I will look for that book!
Hi Mary Ann,
Wow, your sister, Teresa’s remodel of her kitchen turned out so well. The cabinets new color is perfect, the white tile. The lighting looks good. As usual you nailed it, and all the time, effort, and energy Teresa did. What a “dream team.” I admire you both as sisters.
You look pretty in the light blue and white skirt.
Yay, family coming later this week. Pure joy.
I love the new kitchen – it’s at once modern and retro! If you’re looking for a fun summer read, Let’s Call Her Barbie by Renee Rosen is a great pick. It’s about all the chaos and office antics that went into the creation of the Barbie doll. Mad Men meets Mattel!
Yes that is exactly what we were going for. Thanks for the recommendation!
Oh, that green!😋 would you please share the color with your fans/followers? Thank you!
Oh yes…I did mention it: Sherwin Williams Acacia Haze.
Totally agreed about All Fours. I wanted to read it because of the hype – total FOMO. And I finished it but why? It had the ickiest sex scenes I’ve ever read. I didn’t admire the main character, thought she was selfish, not worth the reading time. And my reading time is valuable! Glad to hear you concur.
Yes…gross sex scenes! All bad.
I echo all of this. I only finished it because it has such rave reviews that I wanted to see what I was missing. I am so glad to hear someone with my same thoughts. Just icky and unrelatable.
Mary Ann,
I love your column so much. It’s a breath of fresh
air among all of the other email I receive. Thank you.
I wholeheartedly agree with your book reviews. The Anxious Generation was excellent. I read very little popular fiction these days because I find much of it to be as you describe All Fours. Honestly, with a few exceptions for favorite authors, if it’s recommended by Oprah or on the NYT Bestsellers list I usually avoid it.
I work for a kitchen-remodeling firm, whose clients are all about tearing things down to the studs and reworking everything. I adore your approach at your sister’s condo because not everyone needs such an extreme overhaul as those I see daily. I think your sister’s kitchen is lovely and admire both of you for the choice to be conservative with your changes—budget or no budget!
Thanks for all the inspiration.
Such a kind comment, Sheryl. Thank you!
Hello Mary Ann,
I loathed “All Fours” and l thought it was just so sad as l felt for the kid!! Nobody seems to be paying attention! I just finished “Three Days in June” Anne Tyler which is just perfect for summer. Loved your sister’s kitchen and thanks for all the details l am saving it for the time we do ours! Happy week Mary Ann!
Thanks for the recommendation!
Great reads for historical fiction fans:
Broken Country by Clare L Hall
Strangers in Time by Baldacci
Kitchen is beautiful.
Thanks so much, Susan!
adding these books to my list.
Love, love your kitchen makeover on a budget. The soft green offsets the dark granite, which picks up the hardware on the cupboards. Removing some cabinets as you enter the kitchen and showcasing some pretties was ingenious. I’m not sure what Theresa’s flooring is but I have seen tile and even vinyl flooring painted and sealed, making a huge difference.
Enjoy your family time. Getting our kids together is the best!
Love the kitchen refresh! I find the counter depth fridges make such a huge visual difference and are well worth the money.
Yes…I really pushed Teresa for that.
If I walked into this kitchen I would too be singing. It’s absolutely lovely.
Wow, Happy Happy, a little bit of aaaahhh. All these feelings to start your day.
I’m a tad jealous you know!!!
I hope my sister is singing in there with her little dog, Judge!
I was very interested in the before and after feature on your sister’s remodel. Love the look of her kitchen. So attractive! I went back to the bathroom do over and thought it looked so good too. I am always interested in book recs. Thanks for your reviews. I liked the long, white skirt very much
You are so sweet to comment, Linda!
I purchased All Fours from Audible. I was drawn to purchase this book because of the positive reviews. I disliked this book as well. I stoped listening after about 1/3. I thought it was weird, boring and just not a very good book. It was a waste of my money.
Sorry about that, Sharon…who are all these reviewers that liked it?
Wow, what a great looking kitchen. The new cabinet color really makes the granite sing. I’ve seen lots of expensive re-dos that are not as successful as this!
I also sometimes don’t finish a book now. Something never done when I was younger. Age does have its benefits.
Thanks so much!
Just finished Melinda Gates latest book The next day. Its a quick read, about two hours.
I will order it!
What a beautiful and bright kitchen!
Thanks, Martha!
Mary Ann! I have been waiting to see Teresa’s kitchen! It’s so beautiful! Light and bright! She must be sooooo happy!
xo
She has a nice view too, Annie.
I am, Annie!!! I knew Mary Ann could transform it! 😅
I love you.
MA, your sister’s kitchen looks fabulous. I love the paint color chosen for the cabinets which makes me love the stone countertop too. They work beautifully together and she must be thrilled. All the changes turned that kitchen from dated to fresh, modern and beautiful. Thanks for sharing what not to read. I’ve found myself feeling that way about quite a few books lately (including one so popular it will soon be a movie) and I’m much quicker to leave the guilt behind and stop reading. Life’s too short. Have a great time en famille! xo
Yes…at least I usually get the books for free from the library so not so much guilt in returning.
Thank you for the recommendation on what NOT to read! How refreshing! I now can focus on the wonderful stack of books ‘to be read’…I appreciate your point of view and honesty.
It just made me mad that I spent any time reading it!
I completely agree about the book, All Fours. Awful, trashy and for me, insulting.
Thanks for your support, Donna! Like minds.
