Collected Vintage Nursery Ideas From Leonardo’s Room
My daughter, Alexandra de Laurentiis is my guest again to share her collected vintage nursery ideas…
A Message From Leo’s Mom
Hello! Last time I was here I had just returned from the design inspo mothership (aka my mom’s house) and had booked a handyman to do some nursery touch ups for my son Leonardo’s room.
A bit of back story: Luca and I moved when I was 8 months pregnant with Leonardo. And while my superhuman nesting powers got the rest of the house settled before he came, I was never really able to finalize his room. So now, here we are and Leonardo is 16 months (whoa!) and he loves his newly refreshed nursery.
Here’s what we did:
Collected Vintage Nursery Ideas
Colorwashed the Room in Sherwin Williams Acacia Haze
We painted the walls, trim and ceiling the same color and I really love how it turned out. Very serene (it’s actually the same color as his sleep sack which is basically his emotional support blanket) and gives the room a quick hit of character.

I also included a day bed for reading books which converts into a bed for guests and a skinny little faux olive tree to add some texture.
Decorated with Vintage Family Items
I love a collected, vintage look. So rather than a traditional nursery theme, I opted for collecting Italian accents and movie memorabilia from my husband’s family and western accents from mine (my Mom’s side has been in California forever, even coming over in a covered wagon). We joked that it ended up to be a sort of “Spaghetti Western”.

We styled the Jellycat stuffed animals to make it feel more like a little boy room (they are the best baby gift!) as well as a few special pieces like Tiffany cups and rattles (gifts and heirlooms).
Styled the Closet & Removed the Doors
The room itself is pretty small so removing the closet doors made it feel bigger. I also had fun styling the shelves with his little clothes, hats and animals. Everything else is hidden in the drawers.

Accented with a New Rug
This 8×10 Ruggable adds to the semi-western theme and is super easy to wash for a toddler’s room. Also isn’t this the cutest mini Vespa my mother in law got him for Christmas?

Organized the Toys & Musical Instruments
My eternal struggle as a Capricorn mother of two toddlers is dealing with clutter. So a big priority was to find aesthetically pleasing ways to organize toys and hide clutter. Leonardo actually loves that he can easily get to his toys under his bed in his repurposed basket changing table.

His favorite toy in the world is this button thing which is another great gift idea. He is also very into music – the little guy loves to dance! We were lucky enough to inherit this mini drum set and tiny piano from the older kids across the street. Unfortunately, it seems like they are no longer available but there are some really cute alternatives online.
… And that is it from us today! Hope you enjoyed reading and got a little inspo.

Air this is darling so smart to remove the closet doors. I am passing that idea on to Jenna!!
Adorable nursery and such fun ideas! I’m forwarding to my middle niece who’s pregnant with her third little. 💜
Another fun post by Alexandra and she definitely has her mother’s exceptional decorating talents. Leo’s room is adorable and a room he can grow in for years to come. I love the color washed walls and the pretty, very practical area rug that he will have many happy playtime hours on!
His nursery is perfect for a growing boy. He will be able to grow up in that room as it isn’t babyish. The color is beautiful and soft and that rug is great! Good job girls! I’m 81 so I can get away with calling you both girls. My four sons would have loved a room like that.
MAry Ann, you have such a sweet family. I love this color wash collected nursery. Having mementos and pieces of your family history is so special.
Thank you for sharing!
Mary Ann,
Thank you for another glimpse into your California family. The color washing in Leo’s room is spectacular while providing a perfect environment for his sweet life. The mini vespa is certainly a dream toy for a toddling boy.
Hugs from Mercer Island,

Your daughter is quite the decorator – and she is quite beautiful! And I love to see your grandson “playing his music”. Have a great day!
I love Leo’s nursery! Every detail is meaningful! The color drenched walls, and the rug…and how you removed the closet doors and made it into a built-in is so smart! I must remember that “button thing” toy for when I have grandchildren!! Beautiful!!!
Leo LOVES that button toy and it doesn’t involve screen time 🙂
You will be a grandma before you know it.
