It’s interesting to note how summer skirts for women over 50 can look chic and cool at the same time. Many elegant European women follow these tips:
- looser skirts that are just below the knee, midi or maxi (you probably have one in your wardrobe already), often with white blouses or t-shirts
- natural fabrics like cotton and linen
- neutrals with a pop of color
- Footwear for comfort like ballet flats, pretty sandals or streamlined sneakers
- polished, simple accessories, like sunglasses and textures like a sunhat, woven straw or leather bag
- for cooler evenings, layer with a light sweater or pashmina
This post explores outfits with skirts for summer and even early Fall.
And there is more such as what to read and cook. It’s Sunday Faves time with Annie and Cindy.
Effortless Summer Skirts For Women Over 50
I follow this account on Instagram called Vamanicol who features classy (sometimes older) women with effortless style in breathable materials.

I wished she tagged the women she features. Do you know any of these ladies?
This is Susirejano below and I find her elegance an inspiration too with these maxi skirts grazing her ankles.

My daughter likes the styles of Blancamiro and Mariadelaord.

In fact, we saw Maria de la Orden in a neighborhood in Madrid, where she was opening up a boutique clothing store. It was the first time I’ve ever seen our daughter, Alexandra star struck!
Maria is in Positano above…it’s fun to follow their glamorous lives on Instagram.
Shopping my closet, here’s my version of a classic look in lightweight fabrics with a white button down shirt and an old skirt that hits my calves…

classic white shirt knotted at the waist (on sale) • black cotton eyelet lace skirt (similar) • leather open weave Mary Jane flats (stylish without resorting to heels) • woven leather tote (similar) • Quince polarized sunglasses • flowered umbrella

Florida afternoon rain storm. Many thanks to my daughter-in-law for the pretty compact umbrella (good for travel). Note: the leather flats are in my normal size 7.
Comfortable But Chic Outfit Of The Week
The skirt, top (I ordered them) and belt are on sale and very reasonably priced from Loft.

Poplin skirt • striped fitted top • belt • sneakers • crossbody bag • red Chanel lipstick • Quince polarized sunglasses
What do you think about the versatility of summer skirts?
I’m counting down the days until we leave for Paris and Madrid with the kids and friends in September. You may also like Ever Dream Of Owning An Apartment In Paris?

Our New Counter Stools To Mix With The Old
On Thursday, I posted Bar Stools to Update Your Look For 2025 and included a shot of our new stools that blend with the old ones (one broke and now they are discontinued).

But I may end up buying two more of the new ones and giving the old stools away. Chief likes to hang out in the kitchen within a two to three hour window of dinner…just in case it’s served early (which never really happens).

I love your style! Thanks for all the outfit inspiration each week. Can you please share you paint colors-wall and cabinets? Thanks so much!
Thanks, Susan. The walls are Benjamin Moore Simply White and the wood BM China White.
I was in Loft today and they had the striped off-the-shoulder top, but not the skirt. I bought the top and ordered the skirt. What a cute outfit! Thanks for the inspiration!
oh good! I am still waiting for mine to come.
Mary Ann, I love your black and white skirt outfit. Personally I love dresses and skirt and do not like to wear pants or jeans unless it’s cold.
I tried to order the Loft skirt but is is sold out. Looking forward to seeing you in yours.
The salsa looks delicious! I cannot wait to make it.
Have a wonderful week.
You asked about knowing any of the women in your first set of pictures. The lady in the middle of the second picture, I follow her on Instagram, she is @LINDAVWRIGHT
Hi Mary Ann,
Thank you for a lovely post and all the instagram inspirational sites. So my style! I am petite 5’2 and I am loving midi and maxi skirts at the moment with the heat; I like the drama of the swish! And they are so easy. i wear a linen tank or a tee on the top and if I need a third piece Tommy Bahama linen jacket. The recipe looks perfect thank you! Happy week!
Ha! I like the swish too!
I must’ve spent over and hour with this post and links! Haven’t shopped Ann Taylor in years and ordered the white shirt in tall among many other things on sale. Thanks for the inspiration!
You look fantastic in those skirts. Even though I’m 5’11, skirts don’t work well for me as I’m thick in the middle. Thank God for the French tuck. Is that going out of style though?
And you’ve got me dreaming of Paris. I’ve got to get back! My favorite time to travel there is in November or April. Not as crowded and I get to break out some of my cooler climate wear I miss wearing in Florida.
You’re doing a brilliant service!
Thanks, Jayne. I think you will like the white shirt!
I don’t wear skirts as my hips are bigger (slight pear shape) and the waist emphasizes that so I wear maxi dresses. One step dress.
I’m so happy you posted Susi. Her style is elegant, feminine, and rich. Love, love her statement jewelry. I’m going to steal the idea of a shorter necklace then a longer one laying over my white button down.
I love maxi dresses too…did you see the black J.Jill one a few posts ago?
You look lovely in skirts and shirts. At 5’1” tall and 134 lbs. this morning, my waist no longer looks good with anything tucked or worse yet tied at the waist. I prefer my tees out and my pants pull ons for comfort. I wear cotton gauze and linen blends in this hot summer weather. Yes, it is even hot here at 5,300 ft. In altitude here in the small town front range mountains of Colorado. Enjoy a peaceful Sunday.
I wore pull on pants with a matching gauze top to the movies today.
Mary Ann, you always look so cute! I love the black eyelet skirt and shirt, but these are not things I usually wear. I’m short, and recently have gained a lot of weight in my middle which makes me not want to bring attention to it by wearing two contrasting pieces. I’d love to know how you keep so trim. I also am finally letting my hair go gray, so there’s a lot about myself that I’m uncomfortable with right now.
I bout the J Jill outfit you posted a few weeks back–the white linen top and dark blue linen pants. Spectacular. Thank you for that inspiration!
I really need to proofread before hitting “send.” Of course I meant that I *bought* the pants!
Oh I love that outfit too. I think wearing all one color is great too if you are shorter.
Half the time I am sucking my middle in for the photo 🙂
I absolutely LOVE that outfit with the black eyelet skirt, white top and those woven mary janes! Beautiful!
Thanks, Carol! I’m glad I hung on to that skirt all these years 🙂
Sorry about your stool. I remember when you got those and reading reviews where other people posted pic with stools breaking just like that. New ones look great but do you really need 4? I’m thinking it may look busy since the back’s are higher. I’ve been shopping for a kitchen nook table/chairs and bar stools for our counter. Not easy finding quality without breaking the budget.
You look great in skirts!
You know I was looking at the new stools on line and you can buy them also without backs…which may be less busy. Thanks for commenting.
Hi Mary Ann,
Inspiring post! I’m your height, but have to be 10+ pounds slimmer than now to wear full skirts and tucked-in tops, I think 😳. The longer styles with a shorter, fitted untucked top may work for me, tho. Are you exercising a lot more to stay trimmer? I thankfully have lost weight with cutting back + ultra low dose estrogen to counter bone loss, but also need to up my metabolism!
I do love the look of skirts with untucked tops. I tried to lose weight, Joan, for Tommy’s wedding but now it is SO hard without that motivation.
***Motivation*** — yes, I get that! Mine comes and goes, and when it goes, it’s a quick and slippery slope…
my cat likes to hang out in the kitchen too!
I ordered the Farm Rio dress just like you did and I am so excited to get it-
we are celebrating our 43rd wedding anniversary on the 21st!
you inspire me to try clothes out of my comfort zone. Thank you!
Oh good Jill! Congrats on 43! I’m going to wear that dress for our 40th wedding anniversary. It’s fun.
For a petite person I find your skirt look more proportionate than a full maxi. At 5’1” I get lost in a lot of volume. Your length or perhaps just slightly longer looks cool and summery without skewing too ‘cute’. My knee length days are over and I find some of this years summer pants are too voluminous for me….its a journey but I do admire the elegance of the photos shown. Where is your white waist tied shirt from if you don’t mind sharing? Again being short I find front button shirts are not proportional or the manufacturers feel every petite has a small bosom!
That white shirt is from Ann Taylor…link above. Comes in petite, too.
I actually think maxi’s can make me look taller.
Mary Ann you must follow Linda V Wright and go to her shop Crimson & Cashmere! I love that black skirt and white shirt on you and adore your new stools. They are so much more classic! I would spring for two more!
Now that I see her name I remember you and Annie have mentioned her before.
I guess I should spring for the other stools. Just a lot of money since the old ones are barely three years old. Maybe Tommy can use them in his new place.
Loved the outfits in this blog. Thank you!
Thanks!!!
Loved the outfits in this blog. I think I need a stylist!!!
MA! You look tres chic in your beautiful black lace skirt and crisp white shirt. Skirts for summer are the best and I’m going to include one in my luggage as I head to Cabo. Thanks for the inspiration. Oh, and I think I need your open weave Mary Jane’s. Love. xo
Have a wonderful vacation, Juliet!
I would love a link to your kitchen runner. Love the bright blues. I live just a bit south of you and have had a difficult time finding the perfect clear colors. Thank you in advance. Debra
Thanks, Debra. It’s by Ruggable (washable) but I don’t think its available anymore. Sorry. But you could check out their site…get the rug pad too as it’s important to keep it in place.
You look great in the white blouse and black shirt – I’ve got to get the shoes!
Thanks!!!
I follow the woman in the middle picture on Instagram at lindavwright.
Thank you!
