Why Indian Print Paisley Is A Pattern I’ll Never Tire Of
There are certain patterns that endure. They simply evolve and settle beautifully into every era. Indian print paisley is one of those patterns. It’s been a longtime favorite of mine so it’s appropriate for the Sunday Faves with Annie and Cindy.
The Timeless Beauty of Indian Print Paisley: A Pattern That Never Goes Out of Style
It’s traditional and slightly exotic. When used thoughtfully, it never feels dated. In fact, right now it feels especially relevant — warm, layered, and personal.

This Indian block print Raoul Textiles fabric was upholstered on my friend, Debbie’s chairs several years ago…and it still looks current.
Let’s take a closer look at why.
The Origins of Indian Print Paisley
I did some research and the paisley motif actually began far from the fabrics we see in today’s homes and wardrobes. Its roots trace back to ancient Persia, where the curved teardrop design — known as the boteh — symbolized life, growth, and eternity.
Over time, the motif became especially associated with the exquisite shawls woven in Kashmir. These intricate textiles were highly prized and made their way to Europe in the 18th and 19th centuries. Eventually, the design was widely produced in the Scottish town of Paisley — which is how the pattern received its Western name.
What I love most about this history is that paisley has always been connected to craftsmanship. It was detailed and expressive from the very beginning.
What Makes Indian Print Paisley So Distinct?

Intricate Hand-Blocked Printing
Many Indian paisley textiles are still made using hand-carved wooden blocks and natural dyes. The slight variations and imperfections are part of the charm.

A Sense of Movement
Paisley has a softness to it. The curved lines create flow. Unlike geometric patterns, it doesn’t feel rigid.
Decorating With Indian Print Paisley in a Classic Casual Home
If you love collected, comfortable interiors, paisley fits right in.
Start With Accent Pieces
You don’t need to upholster an entire sofa to enjoy it.

- A paisley throw pillow on a neutral sofa. Etsy is a good source
- A block-printed tablecloth layered over a simple picnic table
- A lampshade trimmed in a subtle paisley, like from Ballard Designs
- Paisley curtains framing a bedroom window (the above are from AD Couture Home on Etsy)
Use It in Smaller Spaces

- We recently added a paisley shower curtain from Etsy in our guest bath. The washable padded mat is from Ruggable.
- A guest bedroom stenciled with a paisley pattern (remember this post where I did that?)

Paisley pairs beautifully with:
- Stripes
- Small-scale florals
- Simple ticking fabrics
- Suzani patterns
Speaking of suzani patterns, this table throw is on sale and it’s a fresh for Spring update in our dining room.

The azalea plants are from Trader Joe’s.

Paisley isn’t just for the home — it has long been a wardrobe staple as well.

Why Paisley Feels Especially Fresh Right Now
Indian print paisley brings:
- History, it’s endured for centuries
- Craftsmanship, much is still done by hand
- Subtle Bohemian drama
- A floral that is not super feminine (think of a man’s paisley silk tie)
It adds interest without being trendy. For a home that feels classic but not predictable, paisley is a great addition.
