A Chic North Carolina Mountain Getaway, And More Faves

While staying with our dear friends, Dorothy and Carlos we visited a chic western North Carolina mountain getaway called The Swag, along with the nearby down-to-earth town, friendly town of Waynesville and took pretty hillside hikes among wild flowers and berries.

I wanted to give you a few highlights along with other good things as its Five Faves time with Annie and Cindy.

The Swag, A Relais & Chateaux Resort North Carolina Mountain Getaway

We took a little tour around the chic resort The Swag. “Perched almost a mile above sea level on the summit of the Great Smoky Mountains, The Swag combines authentic hospitality with epic natural beauty.”

It’s very “Ralph Lauren western” and luxurious.

Waynesville, North Carolina And Hiking In The Great Smoky Mountains

Our friends, Dorothy and Carlos rented a cabin in Waynesville for a month to escape the Florida heat (in fact we saw a lot of Florida license plates there). They invited us to stay a while.

There was easy access to hiking trails where Dorothy and I enjoyed fresh wild blue and black berries (delicious) along our nature walk.

The little town of Waynesville has fun shops like Twigs & Leaves Gallery with handmade pottery. I bought Carlos a covered butter dish and the oil canister for Howard (below). HH Walker is a beautiful antique and art store where I purchased barley twist candle sticks.

Don’t miss the Barber Orchards Fruit Stand if you are in the area. And try the cookies! When you order one, you will find three in your bag. 🙂

Simply Delicious And Easy Appetizer

Our long-time friend, Valerie brought this delicious Meredith Dairy Marinated Cheese for an appetizer to serve with crackers. She said that a friend told her it was like “crack” it was so addictive and I can see why!

You can get it at some Whole Foods, specialty cheese shops or a package of three from Amazon.

Outfit Of The Week: Warm Days and Cooler Evenings

I like the comfort and movability of knit jackets. This is a cute one from Anthropologie that you can dress up or down.

Upgrades To Skip If You Are Trying To Sell Your House

I am pretty much in agreement with this interesting House Beautiful article about décor elements that may make it harder to sell your home (like the yellow backsplash in our daughter’s new home).

Still, it’s important to personalize your home if you are staying! For example, I still love the wallpaper in our powder room.

  1. Wow this looks like fun!! Always love a simple go to appetizer!!

  2. Theresa B. says:

Is there a specific recipe for the marinated sheep and goat appetizer? OR, do you just pour into a bowl (cheese and liquid)?
We have a new Whole Foods coming into our town.

    1. Just pour it in the bowl with a bit of liquid. You can use the rest of the liquid for salad dressing.

  3. The squash caught my eye, it looks so fresh and my kids love it. Looking forward to spring to be able to purchase/grow it. If that is the Aussie cheese company cheese, it’s so delicious.

  4. The Swag looks amazing – we loved the visiting the mountains when my daughter lived in Tennessee, hoping we will make it that far east again before too long. The Texas heat is wreaking havoc on my sense of humor these days.
Thanks for sharing the House Beautiful article. We’ve been “about to move” the whole 10 + years we’ve lived in our house, and about the time I decided “forget it we’re staying”, we are in fact preparing for a move – so I’m updating with more neutrals. I prefer them, actually, but some of the finishes I would choose for myself I wouldn’t choose for resale, so I’m conflicted. I feel like the minute I choose for resale we’ll end up staying put.
Have a great weekend and week!

    1. “wreaking havoc on your sense of humor” HAHA! I know…same thing here now that we are back in Florida.

  5. So glad you got to some to our part of the country. We love The Swag having been there years ago when the original owners were still there. A truly special place with great history and fabulous views.

  6. Annie Diamond says:

Mary Ann! I’ve loved seeing your travels! I haven’t spent much time in that part of the country…and it has been years, you’re making me want to take a road trip!
Love your outfit of the week! Will I be seeing that in Paris? Can’t wait!
    Xx

  7. Mary Ann! That cheese is DELICIOUS spread on a baguette with thinly sliced cucumbers, oregano and a little bit of the brine/oil from the jar dripped on top! 🤤

  8. Fun visit to the Smoky Mountains! We last visited in the late NINETIES, with my mom in Fall — that is a LONG time ago. As we will be relocating from the MW back to Virginia for retirement in a year+, I am sure we will be heading to the mountains for a future summer break, so thank you!

Love your outfit suggestion — very cute!
