I don’t know about you but the older I get (66 now), the drier my skin is. So, I wanted to fill you in on a few skin products For Women Over 50 recommended by my dermatologist that are working for me. By working for me I mean enough so that I can occasionally go sleeveless and feel good about my feet in sandals.
I’m also sharing a colorful wedding guest outfit and a breezy, inexpensive dress from Amazon. It’s Five Faves Time with Cindy and Annie.
1. A Colorful Wedding Guest Outfit
All our friends are starting to have children of marriageable ages…so I am usually on the lookout for wedding guest dresses. I like Farm Rio and this maxi dress below.
I might have to have it hemmed (I’m 5’1″) and I would have my seamstress put a couple of snaps at the bust. The French get everything tailored to get the best fit (which got me started when we lived in Paris 20+ years ago).
dark pink lipstick • freshwater pearl necklace • wide-brimmed hat • tropical print maxi dress • block heeled sandals • straw and leather bag
Maxi dresses are all the rage! Did you see that popular post?
2. Skin Products For Women Over 50 My Dermatologist Recommends
It seems that after stressful times (like when my mother died or moving across the country from California to Florida), I break out in eczema on my arms. Which is dry skin according to my dermatologist. She recommended a prescription cream for the eczema patches.
But for every day, she said to use Eucerin on my body and Amlactin on my feet (which were rough). I added Jergens Natural Glow to her list. And I’m happy with the results!
I apply extra Eucerin to my arms (and underarms which can get crepey) after showering and then a layer of Jergen’s Natural Glow. Before bed, I lather on the Amlactin and it’s working on the callous’s on the balls of my feet and heels well!
PS. The above shirt dress is available here. I’m wearing a petite small. It looks cute with flat sandals too.
3. Eyelashes That My Daughter Thought Were Extensions
I’ve been using Latisse eyelash serum (also prescribed by my doctor) for a couple of months now. It’s expensive so I thought I would “just try it”. And I can see a difference!
Additionally, I have been using Thrive mascara recommended by my sister.
4. Amazon Storefront
You can see all my Amazon favorites (things I order on repeat) here.
5. An Inexpensive Amazon Summer Dress
Speaking of Amazon, I saw this dress on Instagram and ordered it. Did your mom wear something she called a “housecoat”? Sort of lounge at home wear but the neighbors could see you in it?
That’s how I feel about this casual summer dress. This is a size small. I washed it and threw it in the dryer. It shrank a tiny bit and came out without any wrinkles. It’s around $40 and comes in lots of colors/patterns.
It would be a nice bathing suit coverup, too.
That’s it for Skin Products For Women Over 50 and my Amazon Finds.
If you are new here, each Sunday I share my top five favorite things along with my friends, Cindy and Annie. It’s like our weekly “catch-up” phone call. If you would like to receive this series every week, please sign up HERE.
Let’s see what Annie and Cindy’s Five Faves are this week:

Hi Mary Ann,
I have lost a lot of my eyelashes due to chemo, which is not over thank heavens! If I use Latisse, can you stop using it, or is this something that you will use forever?
Mary Ann Pickett says
I noticed that when I stopped using it for three weeks that they started to thin out. Good luck!!
Sally says
Does Latisse work on eyebrows also?
Mary Ann Pickett says
I don’t think so.
Joan says
Mary Ann, Nice “in the thick of summer” post! Will try these products!

This might be a bit late but I thought I’d post it in case it helps anyone. I have super dry, super sensitive skin with eczema. I like CereVe as well but have switched to these two:
This is my ride or die, desert island must have – Avene XeriCalm Balm or Cream (if you want something lighter). I also like Ceremedx Lotion on my arms and legs when I don’t want anything too heavy.
I have found that lotion works best when applied when the skin is hydrated after a shower/bath. It helps keep the water from evaporating.
Becky says
Get a paper script for the generic Latisse. (Bimatoprost opthamalic solution) If you use GoodRX and shop around you can find it at a huge discount. GoodRX is great for prescription things not covered by insurance. Paper script allows you to shop prices on GoodRX and then go wherever it is cheapest. And I learned that you can use Costco pharmacy even if you aren’t a member. I’ve been using for 8+ years and although there is a risk, my blue eyes haven’t turned brown.
Mary Ann Pickett says
GREAT info!!

Hey there, MA! 66?! Impossible. You look at least 20 … 30 years younger. Eucerin seems to be dermatologist favorite … and I love it too. The upper arm thing is a battle though and I slather it on. I’m going to try the Jergen’s Glow too. Thanks for the recs. Love your wedding guest dress option. Farm Rio is so good. And that Amazon dress is perfect to live in all summer long. Hope you’re having a great 4th of July weekend! xo

Dear Mary Ann,
Your body cream suggestions are timely. It seems that I’m at that “certain age” where I’m plagued with dry and crepey skin. Thank you for the convenience of finding the products on your Amazon page.
Happy 4th as you welcome Louisa back to your home and neighborhood,
Diney
Mary Ann Pickett says
Thanks, Diney, we are having fun.

I have not tried Latisse because I have blue eyes and my dermatologist said that using it could turn my blue eyes brown and they would not go back to blue. Something to ask if you have blue eyes and are considering it.
I love Jergens Glow, but find the fair to medium is a little subtle and the medium to dark too dark for my fair skin, so I buy both and use a squeeze of each mixed together. I also found it goes on much more evenly using a mit and you use less of the product. I got a mit on Amazon – very inexpensive!
Mary Ann Pickett says
Great advice, Carole. I have green eyes and they are still green but that would be scary to have them change color.
Melinda says
I use Jergens glow also for my legs to keep a slight tan on them. Works great.
And that bohemian dress is darling. I’m ordering it! Thanks for the great tips!!
Mary Ann Pickett says
Thanks, Melinda!

I ordered the J. Jill navy linen dress on your recommendation and love it. I am 5’6″ so I got the regular size and the length is ideal with flat sandals. I am taking on my trip to Paris and Provence next week.
Mary Ann Pickett says
Perfect!! I think I will take mine to Portugal with me in a couple of weeks.
Bess says
Just ordered the dress from Amazon. If it looks as good on me as it does on you I may order in another color. Thanks for mentioning how it survived the dryer. Hope you’re enjoying your weekend and happy 4th!
Mary Ann Pickett says
Happy Fourth to you. I may order another, too!

Love this post. I too use Latisse and Thrive. Latisse can be a bit more affordable by putting 1 drop in the cap, using one brush or 2 to apply. Once you have the desired length and thickness you can maintain it by applying every few days. If I have a special event I apply it more often for a week or 2 before. I have had a 5ml bottle last as long as 6 months making it pretty affordable. I use Cetaphil cream my dermatologist recommended. I find it is less sticky than Eucerin. I’ll look for the Amalactin and Jergens Glow. Love the dress may have to order one.
Happy 4th of July.
Mary Ann Pickett says
Oh that is good to know that you can just use the Latisse every few days. I have had eyelash extensions a couple of times before and I felt like it made the real ones fall our over time.
Jen says
Great post! I ordered the sandals, if they work out I’ll order another color.
Mary Ann Pickett says
Great!

You look great in florals and prints! I always feel very much out of my comfort zone in them. The J Jill shirtdress is more my speed. It looks like a bright navy in your picture, but very muted on the website. How would you describe it?
I’ve heard good things about Amalactin, but when my daughter tried it a few years ago, I recall that it had an unusual (and not very pleasant) scent. Do you find that to be the case?
Thanks!!
Ginger says
I use Ámalactin from my knees down and it really does greatly reduce dry flakiness. It does have a strange, not pleasant, scent which dissipates in a few minutes. I use it in the evening before bed and never notice the scent after first applied and I’m very scent sensitive. Hope this helps.
Mary Ann Pickett says
Yes…the scent does go away. I think I will use it on my knees and legs too!
Mary Ann Pickett says
Yes…I am not crazy about the Amalactin smell but it does go away and it works!. I think the navy color in my photo is pretty accurate.
Karen B. says
Mary Anne,
This is a great summer post of favorites. I will try Amlactin. My skin has gotten so crepe ridden. The dress is cute. Have a wonderful 4th of July weekend.

Thanks, Karen!

Hi Mary Ann
Yes details for Jergens! That is very interesting about the Amalactan. I must give that a try for the rough heels! I use Cerave and love it. You always look so cute in those flowery dresses!
Mary Ann Pickett says
Cerave was another that the dermatologist recommended but she gave me samples of the Amalactan and it worked so I bought it.

Hi, Mary Ann! I just started reading your blog, and am enjoying all the varying topics immensely. (found you from Cindy Hattersley). That wedding dress is dynamite! I wasn’t familiar with Farm Rio, what an interesting company! Thanks for all the great, creative ideas.
Mary Ann Pickett says
Thanks, Kathy! Welcome to CCH!
Mary says
Great blog! Regarding dry skin: Now going through tubs of Cerave-great prices at Costco.
Nan, Odessa, DE says
Give me details on Jergens Glow.
Doesn’t it get on your sheets?
Isn’t all around your finger nails?
What shade are you using?
Details please.
When I have used this, I look a mess.
Cathy says
I’ve used the Jergens product before (essentially, body lotion with self tanner added) but now I prefer L’Oreal Sublime Bronze self tanning mousse. It does not moisturize. It is a liquid that comes out of the package as a foam. I use it initially for about 4 days in a row, then every other day, to give my legs a little color (am a redhead, have very light skin that never tans only burns). I used to apply it with my hands, then wash them, never had any issues. But now I use a black velour mitten (like an oven glove but shorter) that Target was selling , merchandised next to the self tanners. It is even easier to use plus feels good and I think helps get it on more evenly too. I have never had it rub off on my clothing or bedsheets but it has come off on towels after a shower but washes out in my regular All Free & Clear detergent. Hope this is helpful.
Mary Ann Pickett says
Very helpful. Thanks so much, Cathy!
Joan says
Thanks for your helpful additional info, Cathy!
Mary Ann Pickett says
I apply Jergens Glow mainly on my legs in the morning and wash my hands. It’s not super strength and doesn’t get on my sheets. I’ve had good luck. It can rub off on towels if you are vigorous but I don’t have that problem.
