Here are simple ways to update your home interior to feel fresh for Spring! These include small changes like new fluffy towels for your bathroom, something as simple as flipping your sofa cushions, or bigger changes like a new area rug.
I’m joining my friends, Cindy, Annie, and Juliet for their recommendations for home decor too! Their links are at the end of the post.

A Plant For The Fireplace
During the months when you aren’t having a fire, a plant or basket (something not dark) is nice in the fireplace.

The gas logs are faux and I took them out, hosed them off outside, and placed them around the planter.

Fresh Fluffy Towels In The Bathrooms
We have company coming this weekend. I bought fresh white hotel towels on Overstock. We also gave this room a fresh coat of paint (Benjamin Moore Super White).

The towels are inexpensive and feel soft.
Refreshing Your Sofa
This is just a reminder to flip your sofa cushions. You also might want to wash them or have them professionally dry-cleaned.
Pretty Throw Pillows/Light-weight Cashmere Throw Blankets
Here’s a good place to add accent colors that you can change with the season. I changed our color scheme from black, rust, and terracotta to blue and terracotta…with accessories.
Recently, I sent back a blue lightweight wool throw blanket as it just wasn’t soft.
We already had one Quince cashmere throw blanket in the color camel which is everyone’s favorite, so I splurged on another in sky blue. At $129 it’s actually a lot less than other cashmere throws of the same top quality.

I ordered two new paisley linen pillows in blue but they didn’t arrive in time for this post so I will give you an update on Sunday!
New Area Rugs, Runners, Carpets
Now is the time to clean your rugs or add new ones especially if you have hardwood floors. We just bought a wool runner made in India with texture for the back door. The texture really hides dirt and I just shake it off outside.

The same company that made this runner also made the hand-tied wool rug in our bedroom.

Fresh Coffee Table Styling
Spring is for simplifying and removing clutter. Here’s what I do:

- take everything off the coffee table
- give it a good clean/polish
- add elements back on in threes
- starting with coffee table books
- something fresh or faux like flowers or plants. I’m using some surprisingly realistic ones from Pottery Bar.
- add a pillar candle or a few taper candles (my candle holders were collected over time. In fact the white paper mache holder is from Merci on my recent trip to Paris).

terracotta vase • faux Queen Anne’s lace and cosmos (three bunches) • wax taper candles
New Light Fixtures To Replace Builder Grade Flushmounts
We changed out two boring ceiling flush mounts (aka boob lights) for something more stylish with a modern look from Crate and Barrel (without breaking the bank). The walls are a neutral color, Benjamin Moore Simply white.

Hope you like them, Teresa!!
Everything looks beautiful Mary Ann!
I have been adding foraged branches and flowers to the house. Changing a few pillows, the winter bedding and candles. Aside from that I am waiting for the pollen to settle before I do an outdoor refresh.
Have a wonderful weekend!
We washed off a lot of pollen yesterday, Elizabeth.
Hi Mary Ann
I can’t believe those flowers are faux. Isn’t it nice to have some faux blooms to fill in when you don’t want to buy fresh. I am going to check those out at PB. Your new home looks so pretty! I can’t wait to see it in person!
Hi Mary Ann,
All great suggestions. I switch out pillows, throws, candles books plants rugs etc. every season. But it’s been raining so much here that I wish I still had the wooly, furry throws and rugs still out from early winter! Your house always looks so fresh and pretty.
Xo Heidi
Mary Ann! So many great ideas! We are not ready to lose the fireplace yet, but during the summer months, I love the idea of doing what you have done here…are you concerned about remembering how they logs go back in place?
Love your vase and candles! The blush is so pretty for spring….but also in the fall with different flowers.
I do love your new rugs! You have really made some gorgeous changes to your home to make it very you!! Can’t wait to see all the landscape!

Take a photo of the fireplace logs w/ your cell phone so you can assemble the fireplace next winter.
Wish I would have thought of that!! Oh well…I like a puzzle.
I need some cabinets in our family room and I love the ones you have with the doors and shelves on top. Are they built ins?
MA, a plant in the fireplace idea is brilliant. I’ve always loved that look but never thought to do it with gas logs. Beautiful. And those throws … oh my, I think I need one (or two). Your house looks beautiful. One of these days I’m going to surprise you and show up on your doorstep for a tour! xo
It felt good to hose off the dusty logs that I’m sure have never been cleaned! Come anytime!
Hi Mary Ann,
Your home is looking great, you must be loving having all this space again! Thanks for the reminder about flipping the sofa cushions. I was at a thrift store this week and found the coolest Italian Tole tulip candle holders, perfect for Spring. They are really tall so I put them on the floor in a corner of the dining room, look great on their own without the candles.
As a side note I have a question…was your sister Teresa in a Mission Fed Credit Union commercial recently? I saw it the other day and it was a fairly quick clip but I swore it was her. If not she has a twin!
Linda
Yes, Linda…my sister was in that commercial 🙂
Sounds like you have a great thrift store!
Guess I have seen your sis enough on the blog to notice…her hair is so pretty! 👩🦳😊
Yes…she got my dad’s hair.
I cleared all my surfaces yesterday and polished them in preparation for a change out today and the lighter weight throw is ready to fluff in the dryer. It’s still winter weather here but I’m ready for spring, so I’m adding it to my home today. Next up is my front porch refresh. Your post is timely.
My porch is next too, Joanna. You sound very industrious!
