You’ve seen those dated, heavy eyesores haven’t you? But here are some attractive ceiling fans that do the job and either gracefully fade with your ceiling or make a statement.
You might want to switch out your ceiling fans for these updated ones. In many/most parts of the country, ceiling fans really help out in the summer. I like them in bedrooms and on porches. Not so much in dining rooms (they blow out the candles, cool the food and chandeliers look prettier).
Let me show you what we have bought for our new house and what I have recommended for clients.
Attractive “Fade Into Ceiling” Fans
Here is our simply designed Minka 52″ white fan. It comes in other sizes. My clients have been happy with it, too.

The well-priced ceiling fans on our porch are from Wayfair. They come in different finishes and have remote controls.

The Serena and Lily white counter stools are 20% off right now.
Statement-Making Ceiling Fans
Ceiling fans with a bit of an industrial edge can look great in more masculine bedrooms and on porches with a connection to nature (especially porches with darker ceilings).

What Size Ceiling Fan Should You Get?
Here’s a handy little chart:

Ceiling Fan Direction
Did you know that in the summer the blades should be rotating counterclockwise and in the winter rotating clockwise? This is easily adjustible with the Minka remote (I’m embarrassed to say I had our bedroom fan going the wrong way to start).

Attractive Ceiling Fans To Update Your Look
Here is a little round-up of my favorite ceiling fans.

Satin Brass Indoor Outdoor 60″ • 52″ Streamlined (comes in other finishes) • Modern Industrial Steel • Simple White Three Blade Minka • Modern 42″ Three Blade

Have you seen any of the newer retractable blade fans that look like a chandelier and the when turned on it’s a fan? I’m considering it but none of my area stores have them and I am having a hard time imagining the ones I see online!
Would love to see a post on them!
I truly dislike the one the previous owners installed in the primary bedroom!
I haven’t seen those, Deb. But it seems that it would mostly look like a fan if you leave it on as much as we are. You could probably try it out with Wayfair since they accept returns.
I have recently ordered that same wayfair ceiling fan for my boys room. As they used to leave the AC running even when nobody’s upstairs . That’s my first time having a ceiling fan and I have to say that , design wise they have come a long way. Let’s see how much difference it will make in our electricity bill.
YOU and I have similar tastes, Li. 🙂
Ceiling fans are a must in our new home and we have had them in nearly every home we have lived in. I am not a fan of the ones we have in our new home. I prefer white or a more industrial/vintage look. You featured some great choices!
Us too…except for the last 8.5 years in San Francisco…so excited for your new home, Cindy!
We have a Minka fan in the same style as the first one you show, but in a smaller size. It’s the best fan ever! I love the lower profile, the sealed light, which is dimmable, and how quiet it is. It’s a great choice for a bedroom. It works on a remote control which is so convenient. You can’t go wrong with Minka fans.
Yes, Susan…we love ours!! I don’t use the light much…but great that it is dimmable. 🙂
Hi Mary Ann,
Your new house looks so lovely!!!
My elderly parents live in Ponte Vedra Beach, Saw Grass, just south of you and I love the area. I haven’t been to Atlantic Beach yet but look forward to going during my next trip. My Dad says it reminds them a bit of Mill Valley. In fact, he said they sometimes wished they’d bought there instead! A beachy Mill Valley I guess…
Can’t wait to see more pictures of your new home!
Best, Ellie
Thanks, Ellie. Ponte Vedra seems so close. I guess after being in the Bay Area things don’t feel so far away!
Love seeing how you’re making your new house a beautiful home. Ceiling fans certainly have come a long way and your choices are great. Your outdoors patio area looks so inviting. Can’t wait to see more!
There is a “spa” out there that I am not too crazy about, Gail. But we have some plans.
Thank You! I have always hated the horrible designs of most ceiling fans but have them in my home because of the huge difference they make in circulating the air and making life more comfortable. In the bedroom comfortable sleep or chandelier….I opt for the sleep. I will be looking at a new ceiling fan now that I see yours
Yes…they aren’t that expensive for how much better the new ones look, Lauren.
Yes! We live in Arizona so ceiling fans are a must. I also have gone with Minka three-blade fans (without lighting) as I slowly replace a few in my home with a more sleek look. I am always slightly envious when I see an image of a bedroom with a beautiful chandelier above the bed, but that won’t work here. And, yes, counterclockwise in the summer! That rotation direction sure makes a difference. I love your fan choices!
You definitely need ceiling fans, Kim, and so do we now!
I can’t wait to see more pictures of your new home. Having lived in Palm Springs I love ceiling fans! I even had one in the kitchen that really helped. In fact now living in San Diego, I wish I had one in the kitchen, but my skylights won’t permit it. Because the designs have changed so much, I say they are go in most rooms!
Did it blow your gas burners out, Christine?
Mary Ann,
I used to dislike the idea of ceiling fans, due to some pretty sad design elements. There are so many great-looking fans available now, it’s necessary to have them in the bedrooms now.
Thanks for the details on some you’ve had experience with.
Karen B.
Yes, Karen and they sort of supply a nice white noise in the bedroom.
We live in Houston and ceiling fans are almost a necessity, especially in bedrooms. Mine are never turned off except for cleaning. As long as they’re moving they don’t seem to gather dust.
Good tip, Valerie …to keep them dust free.
