8 Things I’d Pack Again for a New York City Weekend

A city weekend vacation is a little different. You’re walking more than you think, fitting everything into carry-on luggage, and trying to look pulled-together but comfortable. After last weekend (A perfect weekend in Greenwich Village), I have a clear list of what I’d pack again without hesitation.

I also want to tell you about a chicken sheet pan dinner that Howard made again and what I’m listening to on audio. It’s Sunday Faves time with Annie and Cindy.

My Travel Weekend Faves

1. Quince Phone Carrier $48 This small crossbody is my new found hero. It holds my phone and has a slim credit card pocket, which meant I left my purse at the hotel and never missed it. Hands-free in the city is genuinely freeing. You can use it when you are out for a walk at home. Made from Italian leather.

2. 3. Quince Expandable Carry-on ($170) and Backpack. ($98) The Quince carry-on expands when I need it. The backpack worked as my personal item on the plane and carried my laptop in a compartment and purse inside. It slides on to the carry-on’s handle for easy carrying.

No checked bags, no waiting at baggage claim.

4. Vince Double-Faced Cropped Sweater Jacket New York in the shoulder seasons requires layers. This jacket is substantial enough make an outfit and refined enough to go from a gallery to dinner. It’s top quality and will be in my wardrobe for a long time to come.

5. Stylish Reading Glasses I always get compliments on these, so they are the ones I carry in my purse to wear in public.

6. Lisi Lerch Beaded Necklaces I prefer traveling with costume jewelry. The beaded necklaces are colorful, lightweight, and add personality — with none of the anxiety of traveling with fine jewelry. (You can see the ones I’m wearing again a little further down in the post).

7. Westman Atelier Lipstick (refillable) + Liquid Lip Balm The lipstick goes from day to evening with one swipe, and the Liquid Lip Balm kept my lips hydrated. It looks a little darker in the above photo that it normally does.

8. Rothy’s Penny Loafers I wore these for hours on cobblestones, subway stairs, long dinner — and my feet were fine. The fact that they go in the washing machine when you get home is almost too good to be true.

Hot Outside But You Don’t Want To Wear Shorts

I need to pack extra cool clothes for our trip to Vietnam a week from today (highs in the 90’s). Getting excited!

I don’t look great in shorts but a dress to the knees is cool and works on my shorter frame. This short Sézane wrap dress comes in a midi version, too, and I have it in black. It’s flattering and there are lots of colors. The Lisi Lerch necklaces are the same as the ones above (I took the gold shell charm off and like the way the drop pearl looks with the other bead and freshwater pearl necklace). Those are the dark brown sandals that I will definitely be packing for Southeast Asia.

What To Listen To: Humankind: A Hopeful History

I’ve been listening to the audio version of Humankind from Libby. It’s a studied, fresh perspective of a world that can get you down. “…proves humanity thrives in a crisis and that our innate kindness and cooperation have been the greatest factors in our long-term success as a species.” It also helps to explain how movements like Nazism can take place.

What To Cook On A Weeknight

Howard made this delicious dish again.

Sheet Pan Chicken with Scallions and Capers

Course Main Course

Ingredients

  • 12 scallions, trimmed
  • 5 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • Kosher salt and black pepper
  • 1 lb. or less small red potatoes
  • 8 large bone-in, skin-on chicken thighs
  • 2 tbsp drained capers
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice plus four lemon wedges for serving

Instructions

  • Heat oven to 450 degrees. Place scallions in a single layer on a rimmed sheet pan and drizzle with oil and season with salt and pepper. In a medium bowl, season potatoes with salt, pepper, and oil. Spread on top of the scallions. Season chicken with oil, salt and, pepper and place on top and around potatoes.
Roast chicken until cooked through and potatoes are trendy, 30 to 35 minutes.
  • Transfer the chicken, potatoes, and scallions to serving plates. Scrape remaining pan juices and drippings into a small bowl, stir in capers and lemon juice, and season with salt and pepper. Spoon over chicken and serve with lemon wedges.
Serve with a vegetable like steamed broccoli or broccolini.

Trader Joe’s Roses At Their Peak

If you are planning an event, it’s been my experience that Trader Joe’s roses look their best the third day after I bring them home (I can’t say this is true for say, tulips).

A friend commented that these almost look fake 🙂

  1. We finally got some rain yesterday in Gainesville which will definitely help with the fires around northern Florida. Since we stayed home we watched Remarkably Bright Creatures on Amazon Prime. It was a sweet movie perfect for a rainy day.

  2. 5 stars
