There is a sofa that everyone loves that is called The Jake from Pottery Barn. Since it is a big furniture investment, you want to get it right. I ordered the same one for my daughter, her friend, and my sister and after three or four years of use, they still look great. I just saw my sister’s and daughter’s while in California this week.
So I thought it was time to update this post with new photos. There are some affiliate links at no charge to you and I appreciate your support!
The Sofa Everyone Loves
This couch is in a modern classic transitional style with clean lines. The Jake Upholstered Sofa has a wooden base and we usually specify it in Performance Everyday Linen Oatmeal and with the contract grade high performance cushions.
We purchased it first for my daughter and it’s holding up well as their main couch. Then, my sister wanted it too, and finally, we ordered it for my daughter’s friend in a full sofa and a love seat for their living room (below).

They have kids and pets, too. You may like: Essential Decorating Advice for first time home buyers.
Here is my sister’s…

It’s comfortable but with a firmer cushion fill to prevent sagging. The sofa comes in different configurations for large or small spaces. It’s crafted in America.

If you need a new sofa, you might want to purchase The Jake in a stain-resistant performance fabric like oatmeal performance everyday linen, chambray or river heathered performance basketweave. There are a ton of colors from which to choose, however.
You will still need to wipe up spills and spot clean but so far it has good durability. Also, it is a good idea to buy a de-piller/fabric shaver if the fabric starts to pill.
We like the bench seat cushion with two or three back cushions. The modern style is also timeless. You can accessorize it with throw pillows in the colors of your choice.

Using A Painter’s Canvas Drop Cloth For Extra Stain Protection
At my suggestion, our daughter purchased a canvas drop cloth from Amazon (in about 6′ x 9” or smaller) to provide everyday protection on the upholstery from her toddler and dog (and sports viewing husband).
Alexandra says it really works, is similar in color to the oatmeal performance fabric and gets softer the more you wash it! It can be removed for guests at parties.

New Color At Pottery Barn – Blue And Coastal Accents
Last year at Pottery Barn there was lots of red and this year we are seeing blue with coastal accents (something I’ve always loved). Recently, Chief and I stopped by the Pottery Barn at University Town Center in San Diego.

To sum it up, the Jake sofa from Pottery Barn is made in America and with care, it will last several years. And it looks stylish and you will enjoy the comfort.

Thanks for the post! I appreciate hearing the cushion advice, as Iโm planning to purchase a PB York sofa, and had planned on down blend cushions, but recently started considering the high performance contract grade cushion instead for the same reason as you – to prevent sagging. I appreciate the photos, as it reassures me that those cushions look good and and comfy, not uncomfortably firm as I feared.
Hi! I’m wondering if either of the sofas have the brindle wood base or are they all sea drift? I’m looking at the brindle wood base for a client and want to get a better sense of the tone of the wood. I visited my local store but they didn’t have anything on the floor to show me and there aren’t samples available. They said it’s not dark, not light, and not gray toned. That’s about it. Can anyone help? Thanks!
They are all in seadrift. Don’t know about brindle shade.
Pottery Barn is really upping their game aren’t they? I am so glad we have a store here in San Luis!
What is your favorite fully slip covered sofa? We have several cats and dogs (in addition to a husband and son!) and I find we have to be able to fully launder. Love Lee Industries but the price tag is such a commitment!
I haven’t bought any slipcovered sofas except from Lee Industries for the past several years. Our slipcovered sofas were custom made years ago. With performance fabric…people have been choosinglately.
What are the Sunglasses you are wearing in the phot with Louisa??
Ray Bans!
Hi Mary Ann,
I love the hat. That picture of your son-in-law with your granddaughter is great. She is so sweet.
PB does come up with some pretty items for the color of the moment. The Jake sofa looks great too.

Thank you, Karen!!
enjoy your family while in California! And yes, the Thrive mascara is The Best! Stays on throughout the day, and easily washes off. Highly recommend it to those who haven’t tried it yet.
Thanks for your review, too, Cheryl!
I love the family pictures! Your granddaughter is adorable. I also love the Zara dress but canโt find it on their website. Do you have a link for this dress?
Always love your posts!!!
Sorry, Marsha. I don’t have a link as I bought it at a store in San Diego.
Hi Mary Ann,
I look forward to reading your Classic Home weekly articles. Thank you! I am looking to have some construction done on our house sometime in the fall. I am looking to purchase a new couch and two living room chairs. We have a small old dog who bring in his share of dirt and mud, especially with all the rain. I am thinking of getting a couch from Pottery Barn but am concerned about stains on the couch. What do you recommend? Do you have any suggestions for chairs with an attached ottoman?
Warmest regards,
Nancy
Nancy, to be honest, we make our dogs sit on a throw blanket as you still have to spot clean performance fabric.
Looks like a fun first family vacation for Louisa … and everyone else! Yay for the return of red … and that comfortable couch. If it came in a section I’d order it right now … maybe it does, I need to investigate. If I had to do it all over again the bench cushion is the only way to go. I love our sectional, but the cushions are problematic where they meet … and there’s not enough fluffing that can fix it. Ugh. Thrive is the BEST mascara. And you remind me it’s time to reorder so thanks for the link. Also love the book recommendation … the Queen investigates?! I’m in! xo
Thanks, Juliet!!!
What a wonderful time, Mary Ann! Your granddaughter is beautiful, just like you!
I just ordered the dress in gray. It looks so cute on you!
Thanks so much, Sue!
Thank you for showing your BEAUTIFUL, natural face with the lovely mascara recommendation!!
I always enjoy your postings and of course your precious Grand little and other family members.
Thanks, Suzi! I never noticed how crooked my nose has gotten!
Oh Mary Ann! Your heart must be bursting with everyone on the same coast! Little Louisa is so beautiful! I love the way she’s looking at you!
I AM, Annie!!!
Hi Mary Ann,
Oh my goodness, Louisa, with you and son Tommy stole the show. Louisa is so beautiful. I can see her on the cover of a baby magazine. I wonder her dresses her, hmmm. Looks like you might have a hand in some of her outfits.
Happy and joyful Easter.
Thank you, Katherine!!!
Wonderful family photos! Thank you for the mascara suggestion — looks terrific.
Happy Easter and Happy Spring!
Happy Easter to you, Joan!
Love Thrive mascara! And their philanthropy of giving to women’s organizations. A good company to patronize.
We have the Pottery Barn Pearce sofa and love it. PB makes good quality at reasonable prices we have found. Thanks for sharing the photos!
I’m so glad you mentioned their philanthropy! Must be why they named it Thrive.
That photo of you with your granddaughter is priceless! Happy Easter, Mary Ann
Happy Easter to you, Jennifer
I love Thrive mascara I have been using it for 2 years, The only time it’s come off when I didn’t want it to was in the hot tub. My grandson looked confused and said, “Grandma your eyebrows are falling down.” LOL I love the red revival so pretty. Thank you and Happy Easter.
HAHA!So funny!
Thank you for the book rec. It sounds like one I would like. And the dress looks so pretty–I may have to order one. Thanks.
Thanks, Linda!
What wonderful family time you are having…enjoy!
Always love your posts, Mary Ann. Quick question, what color mascara do you wear, black or brown, with your blonde hair?
I just always use black, Sue. Happy Easter.
