After a tough year, here are seven trends to embrace to make your home a haven. I believe in trends (not fads) that make you happier, more comfortable or feeling more refreshed. We can control our living environments and expect more out of them.
We have five other experienced designers giving us their predictions, too, which I am very excited about! Their links are at the end of the post.
Seven Trends To Embrace 2021
1. Natural Materials Like Rattan and Caning
Recently, there has been a renewed interest in cane webbing and rattan furniture and it’s going strong. Natural materials such as natural wood and leather are up-to-date in furnishings.
I think these elements (like the bistro stools and beams) are in for the long haul.
2. House Plants
Plants are still big this year. The fiddle leaf fig is moving over for olive trees (often faux). And with smaller house plants, the more the merrier to add freshness and clean the air.
As well as, green branches in vases.
3. Colors
Many predict organic shades such as camel will emerge and darker moodier walls.
Benjamin Moore announced Aegean Teal as Color of the Year along with this palette.
When I heard that Benjamin Moore announced Aegean Teal as the color for 2021, I first thought of our Greece trip 🙂 followed by this accent wall and kitchen by Molly Britt. It’s a couple of years old and I still love it…and the floor.
4. Copper Pots (Pinterest Business) Predicts
According to Pinterest, searches for copper pots have gone way up. Ha! I was way ahead of this trend. We actually use ours and they help disguise our rental kitchen. The pans could be cleaned a little better… let’s just call that “patina.” Some of these pans came from E. Dehellerin Paris trips, Williams Sonoma, and a flea market (second from top).
5. Easy To Clean Fabrics
Performance fabrics are in bigger demand than ever as our furniture has been in heavy use…and especially as remote learning continues for some children.
6. Grand-Millenial “Old School” Aesthetic
“The ‘grandmillennial’ style sees young adults embracing the granny chic look of their mothers and grandmothers” according to Today.com. It’s a mix of traditional vintage and modern.
I see my own daughter doing this by mixing her grandmother’s goblets with modern and vintage candle holders. #TheCollectedLook
7. Multi-purpose Rooms
This past year, I’ve had requests to make dining and guest rooms also function as offices. Clients have also wanted to have an area designated to work out (like in a corner of a guest room). In the future, working and exercising at home may continue to some degree. Having a door to close for work or study makes way for less open floor plans.
Here is a screen that I recommended to hide a stationary bike in a guest room (more caning 🙂
When our grown son was here using my office, I didn’t mind keeping a small stack of work files in the corner and using our dining room table as a desk (but I was glad my husband, son, and I all had doors to separate us–loud voices).
That’s Schumacher performance fabric on the dining bench. My “occasional” office has the best view!
And those are my Seven Trends To Embrace in 2021.
Now let’s go see what these brilliant ladies have in store for us!
Mary Ann,
This was such a fun and informative post you talented ladies prepared for your readers. I don’t follow trends strictly speaking but find a few details that I can introduce to keep me from looking too granny-like. 😊
Your apartment is spectacular. That view!
xo,
Karen
Great post! I am all about those dark, moody walls these days. And your view always kills me. So beautiful.
Thanks, Julie!
Great post!
Lots of great advice and valuable predictions for what I hope will be a great new year.
It can’t be worse than last year, Celia. Or can it? :/
Great post Mary Ann! My new dining room table has an antique brass base and the top looks a little similar to yours. I have a fiddle leaf that has done quite well near a window in our living room, but I finally had to buy a faux one for other side. I tried every “low light” plant known to man and nothing would do well. It’s from Ballard Designs and looks pretty real.
I am always amazed at the posts Joni does, it must take her hours to put up all those photos! I have to sit down with my morning coffee to scroll through them.
Linda
Sometimes faux plants are the only way, Linda!
Mary Ann! I love your new dining room furniture! I loved seeing your beautiful collage wall in the reflection of your mirror in your post today! I have always loved your collection of copper pots! I don’t think copper pots will ever go out! And how fun to see Ali’s dining room…so perfectly #TheCollectedLook.
That screen to hide exercise equipment is so smart!
Such great ideas and those paint colors are swoony! so is your view! Thanks!
Thanks, Holly!
I love your copper pots! I have some too that I collected and inherited. Totally agree about natural texture on furniture and performance fabrics. That’s almost the only fabric that I’m using these days! Thanks for including me in this round up, Mary Ann!
Same here, Carla!
What a wonderful post ! My dinning room is Aegean Teal one of this years colors ,the paint color was called Posh Voyage ten years ago I still love it Restoration Hardware had silk drapes in a silver
sage stripe that perfectly matches the paint they were spendy put worth the investment.
My “ stuff “ has become very popular with my granddaughter’s now I know why TeeHee
Thanks for gathering such a great group of talented ladies made my day
Alexis
You are so ahead of your time!!
You always kill it Mary Ann…the ultimate professional blogger! Love everything and that reminds me I have a large copper pot somewhere that I need to drag out! I totally forgot about rattan as that is probably my favorite trend lately because it adds so much texture to a room!
I love YOUR post. I knew it would be good. Get that copper pot out!
Hi Mary Ann, is that really the view from your dining room?! Amazing! I love seeing little bits of San Francisco through your windows. I also love the orange sofa in the ‘Grand Millenial’ photo, fabulous!
Yes but to be honest..not straight out (Alcatraz is straight out) you have to look left to see the Golden Gate from the dining room 🙂
Omg. Your view is unreal!! No wonder Serena snd Lilly is so popular. They probably started the trend!!!!!!!! Thanks for including me!!!
They are in Sausalito …which I can almost see from our living room! Thanks for doing this with us, Joni!
I JUST GAVE COPPER POTS OLD ONES TO SHANNON OF THE BLUE DOOR ANTIQUE SHOP IN CARMEL!!!!
I have a few MORE…………..!!!
WHO KNEW I WAS ON TREND!!
They are smaller pots………..if anyone needs!
I could always add to my collection, Elizabeth 🙂 I didn’t know I was on trend either. They do conduct heat well for cooking.
Great post! Copper pots maybe I better pull mine out and polish them up! Such good examples of the trends you highlighted. I think this is the year of the Grand Millenial. It was mentioned last year but as Joni stated it usually takes a few years to take off. That granny chic moniker kind of reminds me a little too much of the shabby chic era! Thanks for organizing this fabulous group!
Loved your post, Cindy. Get out some Barkeeper’s Friend for your copper. You probably know about it.
I love your style!! Could you tell me where you purchased your dining table from?
It was a closeout at Pottery Barn last year. Sorry, not on their site anymore.
