Last year was a good year for completing home projects and
settling in to our 1950’s beach cottage.
Here’s a recap…
The living room before we installed new double paned French doors,
an insulated ceiling and a new mantel. (Please click on links for greater detail).
The dining room before and after.
My mother’s gilded sconces were restored.
In the kitchen, we raised the ceiling and put in an island.
This was one of the first rooms to be completed and
I keep “playing with” the sitting area.
“After”
Our teen-aged son’s room was finished…before above and after below.
Our daughter’s room was finished.
I designed the bannister and at the top of the stairs we carved out a loft office space.
In our master bedroom, custom linen drapes were installed.
More details on the room transformation here.
The master bathroom was finished with some heirloom pieces.
We used the granite from the old kitchen in the laundry room and installed
shelving for basket storage on both sides of the room.
shelving for basket storage on both sides of the room.
The patio furniture was updated with new custom pillows.
Home projects in 2012: I want to “beautify” our closet, have more storage in my office,
consider window treatments in the dining room and bathrooms, a runner for the stairs,
have more art and ???
I also hope to entertain and volunteer more, have happy clients enjoying their spaces,
plan some affordable trips to new places with people I love
…and the usual, ditch a few pounds.
How about YOU? What are your plans for 2012?
But If you go to a crappy place then your furniture will be cheap but ugly. So go a place that has good furniture and is good with there money. The contractor I really don't know how much that would be.

STUNNING! Where did you get that upholstered desk chair? I need it desperately. 🙂
Wow, Mary Ann! What an incredible transformation of your house! I can't believe the difference! You should have this featured in a magazine, girl! 🙂 Or you should consider a career in remodeling/design! 🙂

Just found your blog from Kristen… love love… newest follower!
Thank you! The ottoman was originally from Williams Sonoma Home but when I had it recovered in Kravet raffia, I had the upholsterer raise it with more padding and double nail heads.
I love your sitting room ottoman/coffee table! Would you mind sharing the source?
Oh, just beautiful Mary Ann. You have a dream coastal home! Thanks for sharing 🙂
Blessings,
Marcia
wow, what a fabulous transformation, thanks so much for linking up to VIF, I'll be featuring this post today! xo
You really did a lot of work last year! Everything is so pretty, know you enjoy it!
Very lovely home. Looks like it's out of a magazine.
Your newest follower, Mary Alice
Since we have been cooking like crazy for a year now…the stains don't bother us at all….seriously! They sort of fade and add patina. I think they still look great and I have not been so tidy leaving oil, wine and food stains overnight. I would do it again.
I would really like marble in my kitchen but am afraid of the staining. How do you like it so far?
Every inch of the cottage is beautiful and dreamy! Thanks for linking, it will be featured next week!
XO

Maryann,
I love the transformation of your home. You did such a wonderful job. We are thinking of moving and I cant wait to start re-designing it. Even though we haven't bought anything yet!
WOW!!!!!! What a year!
How have you liked the marble in your kitchen? I know you actually cook, and I've heard that the marble stains very easily. What's the word from the real world?
Every room looks fabulous, Mary Ann. Congratulations and happy New Year.
All the best…Victoria
What a fantastic renovation, really a home to be proud of!
Wish you the best for the year ahead!
Dear Cindy M: Those hurricane candle holders were bought in Paris 10 years ago…but I have seen similar ones at Pottery Barn. Good luck.
In 2012 I will take less for granted. Dig in on priorities and let the rest wait its turn.
What an amazing renovation! Your cottage is simply beautiful. I love everything about it!
Your home is my inspiration…or should I say, pinspiration!
I love how you have renovated your beach cottage! 🙂 I especially love the double paned French doors. 🙂
I never get over seeing your gorgeous beach cottage, it is one of my favorites! Happy weekend Mary Ann.
That is quite a before and after. I am impressed and know the work (and patience) it requires to oversee a successful renovation. All of the bedrooms feel very peaceful and relaxing, its a very welcoming feeling home.
Happy new year.
Mary Ann,
Wonderful job on the renovation–great vision! I have been looking for some hurricane candleholders like the ones on your living room mantle. Are these a recent purchase and could you share the source? Thanks!

WOW Mary Ann. You did so much in a year. I can't believe it! I am looking forward to seeing everything you complete in 2012….. You are busy!!
Mary Ann,
Your cottage turned out beautifully! Wow, you accomplished a lot in just one year, very pretty. Is this your primary home or a getaway home?
I hope to get my library finished with new upholstery for the loveseat and window seat. Beyond that I think my focus will be garden, and possibly art.
Karen

What a beautiful home you have created! It is an inspiration to look at your 'before & afters'. I have made a New Year's resolution to completely finish all the public living areas and our main bedroom. Thank you for giving me a little extra motivation!
Wow. Your home needs to be in Renovation Style for the before and afters. Amazing work and great design.
I love what you accomplished and have many of the same projects on my 2012 list. I am waiting for the curtains for 3 rooms to come back from the workroom and need to finalize some builtin designs to get them fabricated. I think I will always have a to do list….good thing I love it!
It looks beautiful, Mary Ann! I love what you did with the house. You got a lot accomplished and made a huge transformation! Can't wait to see more of your work in 2012.

You really turned an ugly duckling into a beautiful swan. A job really well done. Best wishes for the New Year and I hope you manage to stick to your resolutions, but if you don't, that's also fine! You can be proud enough of what you accomplished in 2011.
Amazing all the work you did. The kitchen is fantastic! Love, of course, the beachy touches here and there!!
Mary Ann, you did such a beautiful job on your home. What I love is that it is the picture of elegance and pretty meets cozy and welcoming, the best of all worlds. Love how you made it feel so homey without compromising beauty. Your kitchen is gorgeous and it appears your whole house gives off a vibe of one that this is a house that is always filled with lots of love and happiness. All the best to you in 2012!!
love, love, love! Truly makes me want to move back to Southern California and live at the beach again. Congrats on an absolutely charming renovation.
Every time I see your sitting area in the kitchen I love it more-and I've seen it highlighted on so many blogs and Pinterest.
Mary Ann, your home is one of my absolute favorites! I love your style and the "feel" you create. Thanks so much for sharing it. You are inspirational!
MaryAnn,
The hardest part about design is usually convincing others to TRUST your vision. Sometimes it's a bigger job than the actual design project. It takes confidence in your vision, knowledge about sources, and a great team of trusted contractors to bring the end result to fruition.
Everyone shines when team work is exactly that, led by, fought by, and absolutely seen by a visionary creative who does not take "it can't be done" as an answer.
Your results are beautiful and rewarding as a project, a living, and most importantly "a home" to be at peace in.
I'll take more of that in 2012…Happy New Year!
Bette
I can't believe you got all of that done in a year!!! It turned out to be so gorgeous!
Your home is fabulous and all of your transformations are unreal beautiful. Thanks for the recap. Hugs, Marty
I like it!
I wished I could just move in. I love your taste and all of the choices you have made…it is all wonderful!!!
Your cottage is just stunning. I just love your before/after shots & think your place just looks so clean & lovely. Love it!
LOVE your beach house!! So inspired here! Happy New Year!
I never tire of looking at pictures of your home, Maryann! Gorgeous!
Love every inch of your beach cottage! You are a girl after my own heart. Our first two houses needed vision, I shocked husband , friends and family. There is such satisfaction in finding a diamond in the rough. Now , I enjoy the "icing" that I am able to put a new construction. We only put the " icing" on the previous houses when it was time to sell.
PS love your outdoor potty in first picture;)))))
It was so fun to see the tour off all the room. What a gorgeous difference. I'm also really intrigued by your fountain in the last photo.
Yes, ditch a few pounds is on my list too.
It truly is amazing seeing the entire transformation like this all in one post! You would never know it was the same house. Kinda the idea huh? LOL! You are so talented Mary Ann and I can't wait to see what you have in store for us in 2012. 🙂
Vanessa
Just want to say that it took some vision (I think my husband thought I was crazy at first) as the house reeked of cigarettes and dog urine when we bought it and it needed all new windows, plumbing, electrical and a roof… at the minimum. All's well that ends well and we are happy! Thanks for coming by!
Your projects are amazing! Thanks for sharing!
Mary Ann-
That is a major accomplishment, and it looks gorgeous! I know the thou are proud of yourself.
Thank you for sharing.
