Five Faves: French Bistro Salad, Trays, & More
1. Six Great Trays
Did you catch our posts on Creative Ways To Style A Console? Well, I am always talking about using trays so I thought I would show you a few of my favorites for your console or coffee table.
round with mirrored glass • white washed rattan • large modern silvered tray • large white round tray with handles • rich green leather tray • rattan tray (mixes well with different wood tones). My friend, Mercedes just bought this for her new console.
2. Sferra Throw Blanket
Cindy wrote about how she likes Sferra throws recently on her five favs and I bought this one…
Sferra throws come in a variety of colors and are washable.
My color is called taupe, although it is slightly peach. It’s smelled a little plastic-y from the bag so this is after I washed it…nice and soft. Thanks, Cindy for the tip! Makes a nice gift too.
The pillow is made from a vintage rug that I bought on eBay. I brought it out of the closet and back into rotation for a while 🙂
3. French Bistro Salade Frisée
When you can’t go to Paris… this is my favorite French bistro salad that Howard makes. It has curly lettuce, chunky bacon bits (lardons), homemade croutons, and a poached egg on top with a light vinaigrette.
We could have probably just had this for dinner but Howard also made…
4. Braised Short Ribs with Polenta
This is one of Howard’s standby recipes Red Wine Braised Short Ribs. Here he made it with Creamy Polenta instead of potatoes. We had a similar menu last year for…
Small Autumn Dinner Party
I am so glad that I have this blog to document things like that party!
5. CARIVINO Insulated Cup
My sister (who takes care of my mom in addition to running a business) had a hard day on Friday. So I sent her this cool cup (comes in other colors). It’s arriving today from Amazon (a little more expensive but I would like one, too–the lining is glass and not stainless steel).
I thought this would keep her “Chard” cold in while she takes an evening stroll with Mom in her wheelchair and their dog around the neighborhood. When I’m in San Diego, I go with them for our little parade with the dogs. The neighbors love it 🙂

Those are my Five Faves This Week: French Bistro Salad, Awesome Trays, and More
Add any of yours in the comments, please!
Let’s go see what my friends have in store for us…
I’d love to shop in your “pillow closet”. Love the vintage rug comeback kid pillow. The Lyonnaise salad is a favorite which I always ordered when we were in Lyon. I much prefer the American way of cooking lardons (crisp!). Frissee is hard for us to get in the Midwest. My husband would put an egg on almost anything! Love the chard parade. Mayabe Chief and Judge can tote “backups” like a St Bernard!!! Your sister is a saint…with great grey hair. Hope your mom is doing ok with all of this pandemic-monium. Crazy times.
TO HAVE THE SON HOME IS WONDERFUL NEWS!
MY SHORT RIB recipe is the same as HOWARDS but I DREDGE the SHORT ribs in the flour instead of adding……I like the add FLOUR bit BETTER!One less STEP!The meal looks delicious………….
SORRY your SISTER had a BAD DAY!
Keep on ADVISING and FINDING THINGS!!!

Dear Mary Anne, can you please tell me where you purchased the footed, glass hurricane candle holder on your coffee table? I had something similar which was accidentally broken six months ago. I’ve had no luck finding a replacement.
Thank you!
Rachel
It’s really old Rachel. I put it away for a while and just brought it back out. I think it was from Crate and Barrel.
Mary Ann,
What a great list of things worth looking into. The Sferra throws are so pretty, I could add about 3 different colors to my wish list.
Have a wonderful week.
Karen
I am do glad you like that throw. I love mine (I have two). We love those wine tumblers. Don’t tell Steve but if I am drinking a TJ’s white I add ice. Could you guys come visit and have Howard cook? I am very thankful Steve is handy but cook not a chance. Love your five faves as always!!
Mary Ann, we made Howard’s braised short ribs last year and loved them! I’m glad to have the reminder and I think we wiill try it with polenta! I always love your five faves! You have the best ideas!

Your post is one of my favorite things to look forward to on Sunday. And, thank you for the short rib recipe. I had just started looking for one, as the cooler temperatures are taking me in the direction of heartier dishes.
Thanks, Lily!!
Mary Ann,
I’m new to your blog and really look forward to these Sunday Fave Five posts. I’ve already bookmarked Howard’s short ribs to try in the next few weeks. I’ve been visiting all of your old posts and find your voice and content really relatable and inspiring. It’s been something to look forward to during these hard times. Thank you!
That is so nice of you to say, Judith. I’m going to tell Howard that he’s becoming a HIT on my blog.
I so enjoy your posts–you are always kind and positive. I love Howard’s recipes too.
YAY! Patty, thanks so much!
I look forward to all of your 5 Favorite tThings each Sunday!! Thanks so much!
Thanks so much, Susan!
I look forward to these every week! They are fun to read – and I read all three.
Thanks so much, Kathy. So did I!
When I was growing up in the Chicago suburbs, we used to go to a restaurant called the MILK PAIL. They served that same salad. As a kid I thought it was odd to have a poached egg atop a salad but it was delicious!
That’s interesting, Monica. Do you think the owners were French?
The owner was the man who created the first electric toaster- Toastmaster.
It was originally a creamery and there was a wild life preserve associated with it. They served game and had a little store attached where you could buy smoked things. You would find things like pheasant and trout on the menu. The chef could of been french. I’m 57 and I went there as a kid. I looked it up and now it is an ugly Mexican restaurant!! oh my.
What a cool place and great vivid memories!
Great post Mary Ann! I am on the hunt for a new tray. How cute that your sister takes your mom for a walk with a glass of wine. When we first moved into our house there was a couple in our neighborhood that would walk in the evening with Margaritas. ;o)
Linda
I love a tray!!! I could have one in every room…actually I think I do 🙂
So…Howard’s short ribs are on my menu for next Sundays dinner~it is a perfect meal as the weather cools. Thanks to you both for sharing! Please stay well and safe from fire and smoke. What a difficult year this has been for us all.
You will love it. Even better if you make them the day before and reheat. Not that we can ever wait.
