Mother’s Day Wish Lists From Two Moms 30 Years Apart

Hello to all you mothers (pet moms count too) and children of mothers. My daughter, Alexandra and I are each submitting our Mother’s Day Wish Lists for your amusement. Even though we are 30 years apart, we have some similar wishes.

We’d love to know what you wish for, too. Tell us in the comments.

This year has been really busy with work travel. It feels like Luca and I haven’t really seen each other in a month! So what I’m craving for Mother’s Day is some time with him and some self care.

Family Photos

These can either be professional or taken by a loved one (my mom took the above one). Even if the family complains (I feel for when my mom used to force us and we all complained!). They are such wonderful memories.

Right after Leo was born we had our photos taken with MomsonFilm. The photographer, Val is super cool and does portraits all over the west coast that are very memorable, shooting both digital and on film.

Sabrina Sommer Hair Clips

I saw these petal hair clips on a Swedish influencer’s Instagram account two years ago and scooped one in pink and one in blue. They are the absolute best accessory – I get compliments everywhere I go! Because I wear them so much I’m ready for a new set, eyeing the greens and maybe a bright blue.

A Coat Rack To Display Outfits

My husband and I share a closet and I don’t have much room to hang pre-planned outfits like I’ve done in my other homes. It brings me so much joy to “make outfits” for the week as well as display some of my cooler vintage dresses. I think a vintage style coat hanger in the corner of my room would work well.

An Afternoon Nap And Dinner At Home

Last Mother’s Day, Luca made me this cute flyer of my perfect day. He really is so thoughtful! We ended the day with homemade pizza in the garden. I love him.

It will just be Howard and me on Mother’s Day this year (I will see the kids in L.A. on the way to Vietnam with our son and daughter-in-law) but I would love just one or two of these.

A Handwritten Letter From My Children

I know how busy our kids are…so to have a thoughtful, handwritten letter from them is priceless. They usually get pinned to my memo board and stay there indefinitely.

A Photo Frame For A 5 x 7 Family Picture

It occurred to me that Chief came into our lives just as we became real empty nesters. So losing him has been a real adjustment.

It’s easy to order a photo online from places like CVS (I already ordered this one) with a nice frame from a place like Pottery Barn. I think most mothers would appreciate a personal framed photo.

A Medium Weight Terry Cloth Robe

It’s so nice to put on a terry cloth robe after getting out of the shower or bath. I loved the weight of the hotel robe where we stayed recently at The Lodge at Sea Island, Georgia. This one from L.L. Bean seems very similar.

Splurge Item – Maison de Sabré Small Soft Leather Tote Bag

This is something of top quality that I would be wishing for if Maison de Sabré had not already gifted it to me. It has a fun contrast color interior.

The bag charms are cute and well-made like this lipstick case (other colors). I also have a peach shaped one that fits an air tag.

Or for something sweet and small for her purse… I love this pretty hand painted hairbrush (that she probably wouldn’t buy for herself.)

For Mother’s Day Dinner: The Halibut With Herbs That Howard Makes

The Easy Grilled Halibut With Fresh Herbs is high on my faves list and recently Howard served it with heirloom tomatoes and burrata cheese. This, with a glass of chilled White Burgundy, would wrap up a beautiful Mother’s Day.

If you are missing your mother at this time (like I am), take a solitary walk, remember the happy times and tell her all the things that she did for you that are unforgettable. Like giving birth to YOU.

We are glad she did. Thanks for reading!

  1. Lovely post, Mary Ann. Thank you for the reminder to take some solitary time to remember and thank our mothers, those unique and most important persons in all our lives, for all they did for us.
    Happy Mother’s Day!

  2. The tote bag is cute for spring and summer and comes in so many colors. Does the magnetic snap closure hold well to close it?

    Hi Mary Ann, and Alexandra,
I love the pictures of your family. They are wonderful. You are blessed with having such a beautiful family. The card that Luca made for you is heart-felt. My husband creates cards for me too. It’s the little things that mean so much. Preparing a meal for you to have at home and just having time together is the best gift of all. Selfcare is IMPORTANT so you can move forward in a positive way. The petal hair clips would make a nice gift for a few ladies I know.
Are they best suited for a person with super thick hair?
MARY ANN: I’m vintage and still send cards, and letters. A handwritten letter means so much. I so appreciate what you are saying about receiving a letter from your adult children. The gift of time in a “time thief” world that we live in means everything,
Oh WOW, the picture of your beloved Chief fur child is so touching, and the frame is beautiful. I’m not telling you what to do with your blog. I would enjoy seeing Chief at the bottom of your site. Seeing Chief always brings me smiles, plus he is part of your life. The frame is pretty.
Dinner created by your incredible chef, Howard is the best. A labor of love that he gives to your and friends is seriously AMAZING. Do you rent him out? Arizona is too far to drive to for an evening. Shucks!
HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY to two beautiful ladies, you are blessed to have one another in your lives. Mary Ann, yes me too I miss my mama too. I carry her always around in my heart as I’m sure you do too.
Take TLC of yourself and stay safe out there.

  4. Beautiful picture of you and your daughter. I miss my Mom too and she’s been gone 45 years, like your suggestion about the solitary walk.
Happy Mother’s Day to you and your daughter.

    Dear Mary Ann,
The ways in which you nurture your mother-daughter relationship with Alexandria are so lovely. Your mother, who must have done the same, would be so pleased and surely would have loved reading this loving post.

MMS, Marian Parson, is commissioning oil paintings of pets. She works from photos and they are absolutely amazing. You might want her to paint your darling Chief.

    Happy Mother’s Day,
    Diney on Mercer Island

    1. My friend, Gail (who left a comment) did a really cool drawing of Chief that actually shows his personality. And she did a watercolor painting of our dog before Chief, Rocky. They both mean a lot to me.

  6. You two beautiful women are such an inspiration to us all. Loved the family portrait that you took, Mary Ann. The one by the pro is nice but yours was better! Wishing you both a wonderful Mother’s Day. May it be filled with fun, family and lots of love.

Lovely thoughtful ideas every mom can relate too! My 93 year old mum is flying across the Atlantic soon so we will be together for her annual California vacation and Mother’s Day which is a added plus I have only just realised!! Have a beautiful day Alexandra and Mary Ann!

    1. That’s awesome…have a happy Mother’s Day with your mom…that’s remarkable that she is coming!

  8. Do you have a link for your Mary Jane’s?
