Intimate Wedding Weekend Looks For Women Over 50

December 22, 2024 By Mary Ann Pickett 22 Comments

Here are my wedding weekend looks for women over 50. Last weekend we enjoyed an intimate family wedding for our son in Tallahassee, his new wife’s hometown. Here are my five faves of what I wore, how we decorated the tables as well as a delicious dinner we had at Mark and Mercedes house when we got home.

Annie and Cindy are sharing their favorites as usual, too.

Wedding Weekend Looks For Women Over 50

1. The At-Home Ceremony: Mother Of The Groom Dress

The weather was a bit cooler and I wanted something more cocktail appropriate so I went with this long green dress (comes in a wine color too). The fabric and stretch are extremely comfortable and the gathering at the waist gives a nice flattering silhouette. It wasn’t too costly either but I did have to have the hem and sleeves shortened for my 5’1″ frame.

Here I am with the groom at the hotel!

2. The Welcome Dinner: Black Knit Dress with Gold Buttons

The first night we hosted a family gathering where I wore this this black knit dress (sorry, I only have the photo of me in the back!). The gold buttons make it feel festive and I paired it with a black cardigan, tights and black kitten heels with gold buckles. The dress runs a bit shorter so it’s perfect for petites. I ordered a medium.

3. Family Dinner Out: Printed Silk Skirt and Black Sweater

We kept the celebrations going with dinner out with the bride and groom. I wore this Rails midi skirt with a black turtleneck, new leather belt and my 12-year-old leather (good investment) biker jacket. It felt celebratory but still casual and cozy.

I’ll probably wear the skirt again Christmas Eve for our family dinner. I sized up so it’s a little less clingy.

4. Intimate Wedding At Home Table Setting

The day before the ceremony, we gathered at Mona’s family home to decorate the tables for the party. Mona shared a few inspiration pics from Pinterest which worked perfectly with my collection of good crystal (Waterford, Baccarat, Juliska, Tiffany’s) vases and candlesticks.

We paired those with a few sets of assorted vintage looking mini vases and tall hurricane long lasting candles from Amazon. The flowers were purchased two and three days before to give them some time to open from Trader Joe’s, Whole Market, Fresh Market and Publix (I basically ran around looking for white and pale pink roses, etc).

Mona was a beautiful bride.

5. Mercedes’ Greek Dinner: Simple Salad With Caper Leaves And Smokey Shrimp With Orzo

Mercedes recently got back from a wonderful trip to Greece which inspired this fantastic meal. She made us Shrimp Saganaki – a dish she mentioned they enjoyed most days of the trip. She prepared it quickly while we were catching up about the weekend and served it with a side of orzo and crusty warm bread.

Every one loved it and my daughter Alexandra is going to make this when she gets back home to Los Angeles.

Smoky Shrimp Saganaki

This delicious dish is by Yotam Ottolenghi from the NY Times. It combines sweet shrimp with tomatoes and feta with subtly smoky dried Mexican chiles.
Course Main Course
Cuisine Mediterranean
Servings 4 people (Mercedes doubled it)

Ingredients

  • 1 chipotle chile (or similar), stem and seeds removed
  • 1 ancho (or similar). stem and seeds removed
  • 2 fresh long red chiles (or similar) split open lengthwise with the stem intact
  • 1/4 cup ouzo (Mercedes added this)
  • 1 head garlic (1 clove minced, the rest separated but left skin on and whole)
  • 24 oz cherry tomatoes
  • 3/4 cup extra virgin olive oil
  • fine sea salt and pepper
  • 1 8 oz block feta
  • 1/2 lb. peeled and deveined medium shrimp
  • 1/2 cup chopped fresh cilantro
  • crusty bread for serving

Instructions

  • Heat the oven to 425 degrees.
  • Add the chipotle chile, ancho chile, fresh chiles, whole garlic cloves, ouzo, cherry tomatoes, oil, 1 teaspoon of salt and a good grind of pepper to a 10-inch cast-iron pan or an 8-by-11-inch broiler-safe baking dish. Tuck the dried chiles underneath so that they are submerged in oil to avoid burning. Bake for 10 minutes, then stir, keeping the dried chiles submerged in oil.
  • Nestle the feta into the middle of the mixture, and return to the oven for 15 minutes, until the tomatoes are nicely charred and the feta has softened, then remove from the oven.
  • While the feta cooks, delicately butterfly the shrimp by making a shallow cut using a sharp paring knife along the back of each shrimp from head to tail.
  • Set the broiler to the highest setting and let it heat up for 5 minutes.
  • Stir the shrimp and the crushed garlic into the tomato mixture, leaving the feta whole in the middle. Broil on the top rack for 3 to 5 minutes, until the shrimp is cooked through and the feta is golden brown.
  • To serve, spoon some of the tomato mixture on top of the feta, then sprinkle over the cilantro. Serve with crusty bread.

Simple Salad With A Greek Accent

We started the meal with a light salad with the delicious addition of caper leaves. I’d never had these before but they come in a jar. I couldn’t find them on Amazon (so pick some up when you are in Greece 🙂 They have the same flavor as capers and made for an interesting and unique twist to the salad.

Gosh how did I miss this!? Such a handsome couple, they sure go good together! My son’s getting married in April and this has lots of good info! I’m hosting rehearsal dinner at resort in Hilton Head and have been thinking about my floral arrangements and either preparing at home Weds before driving there Thurs (and keeping in hotel room until event Friday night.) Versus brining the flowers in buckets and doing the arrangements day of. It will be a busy Friday with golf outing etc, so would love to handle flower shopping and arranging at home. Will see, would love your two cents. Want to make that delicious looking shrimp dish!

Wedding photos are lovely and so are the decorations. The recipe sounds great–but I’m a quick cook and it’s more than I’ll get to–I guess I have to Greece! Merry Christmas and thanks for sharing your wonderful stories with us.
