For my Five Faves With Annie and Cindy, I’m showing the five steps we used to create a coastal collected guestroom. First, we painted the bedroom Benjamin Moore Simply White with China White trim.
Next, we added a cane bed frame with a beachy vibe, great bedding, and restrained layers of collected and vintage items.
1. Cane Platform Bed With Luxurious Bedding
This cane platform bed from Pottery Barn sets the coastal tone. My cousin, Patricia liked the bed so much when she was here visiting, she wants to buy one.
We mixed a Serena and Lily Washed Velvet quilt with Pottery Barn embroidered sheets (with an extra set of pillowcases) and an old Ralph Lauren white and blue quilt. Everything washes up nicely to make it fresh for guests.

The block print designed throw pillows add a beachy feel too.
2. Refinished Dresser in Coastal Driftwood Hue
I mentioned how we updated this hand-me-down family dresser here. It really made the dresser work in the room. And it’s nice that guests can have a place to unpack.

When our daughter brings the baby here for the holidays, we will convert it into a changing table.
3. Textured Table Lamp and White Mirror
Fresh Beachy Accessories:
The Cambria Seagrass lamp adds to the calm coastal feel. It comes in two sizes and is on sale right now. The white wall mirror is old (it used to be black and I painted it). You could paint an existing mirror or use something like this.

4. Vintage Art In Bamboo Frame
Get the collected look by adding old family pieces.
My husband, Howard always admired my parent’s vintage silk embroidery of Hong Kong while it was under British rule.

My mother told Howard to put his name on the back of it with a note for him to take the art after she died. When that happened, I had the damaged frame reframed in bamboo with UV-ray-protected glass. Bamboo seemed appropriate as years ago in Hong Kong, I will never forget seeing several-story highrise scaffolding made from bamboo stalks. And again, it’s in keeping with the coastal vibe.
5. Vintage Turkish Rug
You can get the collected, one-of-a-kind, worldly feel with a vintage hand-woven rug. This one is from Etsy. There are resources here: “Affordable Vintage Turkish Rugs for a Modern Look.”

Those are ways to achieve a Coastal Collected Guestroom. You may also enjoy Classic Relaxation In A Serene Neutral Guest Room.

What a beautiful calming space. Lovely!
Mary Ann,
Your guest room says “welcome” while telling your family story. The bamboo frame around Howard’s gifted painting is extraordinary.
Thank you for showing again how to mix the gathered with the new.
Diney now on Mercer Island
Thanks so much, Diney!
MA, I love everything! You’ve created a perfect guest room. And it’s a calm and serene environment for your sweet granddaughter for the holidays. Oh my gosh, your first Christmas with a new addition. Your mom’s art is a treasure, and it works beautifully in the room. I can’t believe how how quickly your new house has become a beautiful, cozy and inviting home. I wonder if you’ll get a lot of trick or treaters tomorrow?! xo
What a lovely, beautifully curated guest room, Mary Ann! Your guests feel papered, I’m sure, and it is the perfect coastal vibe for your new home!
Thanks, Janet! It’s nice to have the space again.
Beautiful room Mary Ann. Love the new cane bed too. It all came together so perfectly! Your guests are always lucky to be there! xo
Come visit, Kim!!
This post is very timely. I just painted by bedroom BM Cloud White, and have purchased a linen duvet set in a natural colour. Your project nicely illustrates how to dress the bed and accessorize the room. Looks like I have some shopping to do! I really enjoy your posts, and find lots of inspiration.
Thanks, Marcia! I appreciate the comment.
Lovely guest room, Mary Ann! And your other one is beautiful, as well. Both are serene, yet interesting in their details. I always put XL twin beds in our guest rooms, thinking it allows 2 singles (my college friends, for ex.) to share a room (or maybe I prefer making up twins instead of queen or king beds, ha hah!).
That’s a good idea, Joan.
A beautiful and calming room, and that rug is gorgeous! I’m making a note of that etsy shop. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks, Deanne. The rugs arrive quickly from Turkey!
Mary Ann your guestroom looks fabulous. I love the bed and the print of that PB pillow. I got the napkins for Lauren in the lighter version. That painting from Hong Kong is to die for and you framed it perfectly. The chest looks fabulous and just ties the entire room together. Well Done!
Thanks, Cindy…you can choose which guest room you want to stay in.
What a lovely room! Thanks for sharing the details. Anyone would feel welcome and very comfortable to stay in such a room while visiting. Is that a Glassy Baby candle I spy on the books stacked on the night table? Enjoy your guests, sorry your team didn’t win. But this room is a winner that will be appreciated!
Thanks, Deanna! Yes, it is a glassy baby. Juliet from Make Mine A Spritzer gave it to me!
You must have 2 guestrooms; didn’t put your old (San Francisco) master BR bed in the guestroom?
We do have two guest rooms, Ginger. I have shown the other one before. The movers damaged the blue and white striped upholstered bed so badly that it could not be repaired. Fortunately, insurance covered it, and we were able to buy this rattan one!
Beautiful bedroom that I’m sure any guest would enjoy staying in. Did you ever order luggage racks and if so, are you happy with them? You’ve linked at least two different pairs of luggage racks recently in prior posts, but that was before seeing them in person. Any first-hand recommendation would be appreciated. Thank you . . .
Yes…the luggage racks have been great. I put one in each guest room closet. https://rstyle.me/+eaNY2ozJ9FRb6R9Rrd9izw
Mary Ann,
This room is lovely. It would be a comfortable room for anyone. I love the story of your mom having Howard write his name on the back of the art.
I always enjoy the Sunday Five Fav posts. Thank you.
Karen B.
Thank you, Karen!!!
