Welcome if you are just joining us for this Project Design with Cindy and Annie and some very stylish ladies. Please check out their links at the end of the post. Time to get some inspiration to carry us into the cooler months!
When I think about it, my style is sort of like my interiors…classic, casual with some fresh elements. I like to incorporate new pieces along with staples. It keeps things current without starting from scratch (in your home and on your body)!
Here are my Classic Casual Fall Fashion outfits:
Black Turtleneck Sweater and Flowy Skirt
This is the sort of creepy foyer of our 1920’s apartment building in San Francisco. I usually have a black turtleneck or two in my repertoire and I just read that they are “in” for Fall!
turtle neck • skirt • booties • Chanel bag (mine was purchased years ago and has increased in value)! I’m lucky I got that when I did. But here is a less costly version by Rebecca Minkoff.
For now, I will wear the skirt with a black t-shirt and espadrilles.
Maxi Dress
Here I am wearing a maxi dress last weekend while shopping at Juxtaposition, Newport Beach. I got it on vacation in Mykonos (similar one here or here). I think I can wear it into November in California. Perhaps with some mules like the ones I’m considering below.
Motorcycle Jacket
This is a new jacket by Anthropologie. Since I’ve gotten so much use out of this black leather one, I thought I’d try one a little different.
jacket • classic white shirt • black skinny jeans • Van’s leather slip-on (love these reasonably priced shoes and I want another pair)
The Correct Fit
Since I’m not very tall (#short), I need clothing that’s tailored a bit so that I’m wearing the clothes and not the other way around. Sometimes I’ll buy petite sizes when available or get things altered if necessary.
I’m not very comfortable modeling but as my glamorous friend, The Contessa says when posing “shoulders back!” And it does help 🙂 I always smile, too, especially since I feel ridiculous.
Pleated Skirt and Cardigan
I wore this skirt on summer vacation. This is how I will wear it for Fall. I love to wear these inexpensive, thicker t-shirts with cardigans — comfortable and washable.
Cardigan • Gap t-shirt • skirt • booties • Madewell scarf (sold out) • YSL bag bought years ago on sale in Paris
Cardigan Blazer
This cardigan transitions a casual summer outfit into Fall for cooler weather. I wore this outfit recently on a San Francisco walking tour.
Cardigan (I have it in the camel color, too) • T-shirt • blue jeans • sneakers • cross body purse
Follow me on Instagram. I’d love to see you over there!
NOW, I can’t wait to see what these stylish fashion bloggers recommend for Fall…
Well I’m super happy to hear black turtlenecks are in for Fall because I live in them all winter long here on my cold mountaintop. Who knew a traditional staple like that could be “IN” but I’ll take it! You look darling in anything you put on and shouldn’t feel ridiculous, because you truly could do this professionally. Thanks for the inspiration although this year I am not welcoming fall just yet!
See– you are a trendsetter!!
Mary Ann, Love all your choices. I need more cardigans. You style them so cute. I love that you still have all your bags. Me too. I really think they are the best investment- and pay for themselves many times over. Did you buy anything at Juxtaposition? I love their clothes and shoes. Last time I bought a blouse. Thanks again for asking me to join you ladies. Loved reading everyone’s posts. xx Kim
I bought some gifts…but usually I find gifts for me 🙂 Thanks for joining us, Kim!
I’m really enjoying your accessories. Namely, the Vans, Valentino and YSL handbags. I may need to hunt down the YSL bag on a resale site–I’m wanting a brown hobo handbag this coming season!
It has a horn handle and I had it refurbished once…still looks pretty good. You should try the Vans…they are more comfortable than Keds or Converse for me.
Mary Ann,
I love the season and the clothes that go along with it. Thanks for some links to some of the classic staples. You look great. 🙂
Karen
Okay that polka dot skirt is absolutely adorable on you. And go Allie that Maxi dress is equally chic. I love that your decor style carries over to your inner fashionista. As always the “girl next door” looks so darn cute!
You look beautiful in everything!! That pink cardigan blazer is perfect.. for just about anywhere! The black turtleneck is now on my list and I guess I will not be current without a little leather jacket! Thanks so much for sharing your classic style for those of “a certain age.” Fall is my favorite time of year!
Thanks, Linda. I wore my camel colored cardigan blazer last night as it’s getting a little cooler in the evenings here.
Your outfits are lovely! Classic but current. That polka dot skirt is so fun, and the blue and white dress is so perfect for Southern California. I have a couple of those sweater blazers too…aren’t they the best?
“Gucci” instead of “cheese!” Elizabeth is so funny. I’m crazy about your maxi skirt from Greece and the black and orange polkadots from Anthropologie. They have some real gems! So delighted to collaborate with all of you and look forward to following everyone! Brenda
I KNOW EXACTLY WHERE THAT STORE IS but have NEVER been!THose straw HATS LOOK AMAZING!!
I LOVE LOVE LOVE the MAXI ON YOU!
YOUR WALKING OUTFIT was pretty darn cute TOO!
YOU just NAILED each and EVERY LOOK!
FALL in THE CITY is BETTER than SUMMER in the CITY………or use to BE!
TIME IS FLYING BY…………I have already started to think about CHRISTMAS!
THATS BECAUSE I WAS SO DISAPPOINTED WITH OUR SUMMER!Either too HOT or ugly and grey and COLD in the mornings!
“SHOULDERS BACK and tongue on the roof of YOUR MOUTH when you smile!”
Instead of CHEESE say GUCCI!!!!!!!!

Thank you for the camera tips. Very helpful!
Yes!!! I forgot about the tongue on the roof of your mouth.
You should go to the store next time. Love the “Gucci” tip 🙂
Love these posts and Elizabeth’s photo tips. My favorites are the first outfit with the polka dot skirt and the maxi dress. I thought about the skirt but I think it is a little short for covering up my tacky calves. I am about to order an embroidered maxi dress and I just bought the Sofft sandals in 2 sizes. We’ll see which one fits. Thanks. @sheilamerle
I’m wearing the Sofft sandals now 🙂
I love this post, and all of the others who participated. It is great to see how others dress in the Fall and which things I might need to add to my wardrobe.
I know. It’s fun.
Mary Ann!
I love every look and I love that you were photographed in your beautiful apartment. The perfect looks for every outing in the city! I love that maxi dress too!
xo
Annie
Thanks, Annie. Howard/photographer’s attention span is limited. So I had to make it quick. Loved your post.
I LOVE your style in both clothes and interiors. I like how you connected the fact that the way you style one thing is the way you style another. I spotted that blue pleated skirt of yours that I love so much and love seeing it styled with a cardigan. Big fun! Thanks for sharing your outfits!
Thanks, Brenda. LOVED your helpful post. So great!
Cute outfits…thanks for the suggestions. You look great in all of them. My favorite is the jean outfit.
That’s the most casual and comfortable, Sheila.
you are so darling! i love all your looks, so chic! x janet
YOU are the chic one, Janet!
Can you let us know where we can find the clothing pieces?
