This DREAM BACKYARD Feels Like Vacation All Year Round!

Summertime! This is fun this time of year! Welcome to another Project Design: Outdoor Living Spaces with
Cindy and Annie and also Karen from Garden, Home & Party, Kerry from Graham Hill Design and Marie’s Home and Garden. We are so happy to have this group…all with different design points of view! Be sure to follow the links at the end of the post.
When the windows are open in my sister, Teresa’s upstairs guestroom in San Diego, I sometimes hear the happy sounds of splashing and children laughing. I knew her next-door neighbors did extensive construction so I was excited to get a tour of their backyard.

Recently, Teresa and I enjoyed the afternoon there. I asked Megan, the homeowner about how they went about designing this dream backyard…

What were your goals in designing your backyard space?

“We wanted to have a yard that we would use year-round and one in which we could easily entertain a few friends or an entire soccer team and both sized groups would feel comfortable — neither cramped nor overwhelmed. We wanted “hang out” space that adults or teenagers would use — so that meant lounge space in the water and on deck, iPhone controlled music in every area, TV with full Satellite TV access, fire pit with plenty of seating. And we wanted the design to be a modern and eclectic twist on a Mediterranean style that would look like it had been designed intentionally for the house while also being fresh.”

There are four different living areas:

1. Pool/Jacuzzi:

“My husband uses the hot tub nearly every night. With his glass of red wine and iPad, he uses the space to decompress. It is also controlled by an app on our phone, so he can pre-heat it before he even leaves the office so it’s ready for him when he gets home.”

“We designed the pool to have a large Baja shelf so that mom friends and teenage girls alike (particularly ones who may not want to get their hair wet but want to cool off) could have plenty of space to gather (we’ve fit upward of 10 girls there at once) while at the same time a mom with a toddler or baby could have a large area to be in the water without being in 4 feet of water. The pool gets used (as you’d expect) the most during the summer.”

2. Television viewing/entertaining:

Under the pergola by the bar/TV, we’ve hosted soccer parties during the World Cup as well as my husband’s work colleagues for a catered lunch. The long bar works great for potlucks and informal, large parties. And when there’s a great game on TV, people can watch from the hot tub as well as the lounge furniture.

The pergola overhead serves as a platform for our solar panels –providing a shaded lounge area, some weather protection for our outdoor TV, and energy for the house year-round.

3. Firepit:

“Family s’mores night; teenage cousins/friends hanging out – sitting on the cement bench backs, on the hot tub side or in the ample conventional seating; or adult friends gathering around the fire with cocktails while kids play in the hot tub or pool (the pool/water is visible from all the designed hang out spaces so that parents can always see their kids in the water).”

4. Dining/Cooking

“In the dining area is the largest table we own. So, when we have a large gathering, it’s the perfect place for us all to eat at one table together. We found that the times we wanted to eat outside were usually when we had guests.”

“With a large food prep area, the BBQ, running water at the sink, a stocked refrigerator and drawers for our outdoor plates and utensil, it’s been a really usable area.”

“The table itself is a custom design. I love the idea of repurposing things and have a special affinity for old doors…I found this one from Hungary at Architectural Salvage.”

And then the soccer goal…amazing artificial grass–what kind is it?

“The soccer goal was the perfect solution for a space that otherwise would have been just a very large planting area. Two of my daughters play soccer, and when soccer teams come over, it is invariably used as a source of entertainment.
The artificial grass is called “California Pro” by Nature’s Sod.”

  8. Mary Ann,
This is one of the best planned out yards I’ve seen in a very long time. It has everything any Southern California family could need and want. Thanks for sharing this, it’s filled with great ideas.
