Why Every Room Needs Lamps (And the Best Styles to Choose)
Sometimes the simplest design upgrade really is as easy as turning on a lamp!
When my son recently said that in his new home he’d “like to have lamps and not just overhead lighting to make it feel warm at night.” I thought “my boy has been listening to me all these years!”
So, recently, we found some budget-friendly options for him. And I splurged on a marble lamp for a little upgrade in our living room. Here’s why lamps matter so much, along with the best lamp styles to use in every room of your home.

1. Lamps Create Warmth and Atmosphere
Overhead lights are practical, but they can be harsh and unflattering—especially in the evening (at least have them on dimmers). Lamps cast a softer, more intimate glow that instantly makes a room feel cozier.
Turning on a lamp signals that it’s time to relax, unwind, and settle in.

Our new marble lamp has lighting in the base too.
2. They Add Depth Through Layered Lighting
The most beautiful rooms rely on layered lighting:
- Ambient (overall light)
- Task (reading, working, cooking)
- Accent (highlighting art or architectural details)
Lamps play a key role in both task and ambient lighting. Without them, rooms can feel one-dimensional and stark.
3. Lamps Make Rooms More Functional
A well-placed lamp makes everyday life easier—reading on the sofa, working at a desk, or navigating a room in the evening without turning on bright overhead lights.

The Best Lamp Styles for Every Room
Table Lamps: A Staple of Good Lighting
Use as:
- End tables in the living room
- Bedside tables
- Consoles and buffets
- Desks
Classic shapes work beautifully in traditional and transitional homes, while clean-lined bases suit modern or coastal interiors.

Floor Lamps: Perfect for Corners and Reading Spots
Use:
- In empty corners that feel dark or unused
- Near sectionals for reading light
- Beside a sofa or armchair

The stylish lamp on the left is the one my son and daughter chose. The one in the middle is new and textural. Great for a fresh update. We have the one on the right in our living room that Howard turns on to read the newspaper (he still reads the physical copy).
Choosing the Right Shade
- White or ivory shades give off the most light
- Linen or fabric shades create a warm, casual glow
- Darker or patterned shades add drama but reduce brightness
- Changing your lamp shade can give an old lamp a fresh look.
Have you seen Anthropologie’s new mix and match lamp shades? Lots of pretty shade designs.

If you are replacing a lampshade, take the measurements of the current one and look at places like where you bought the lamp and Wayfair and Pottery Barn.

A new drum lamp shade on this vintage toile lamp that my cousin gave us refreshes the whole lamp.
Beautiful Lamp Examples

brown glazed jug • weathered stone • unlacquered brass desk/table lamp • Visual Comfort crackle finish lamp • floor lamp with wicker shade • small rechargeable lamp (we have two–great for dining and the charge lasts) • leather wrapped brass lamp • 12″ alabaster cordless accent lamp (comes in crystal too) would be beautiful in a bookcase! • metal floor lamp • stone lamp with lit center • shirred cloth shades • pleated shades • scalloped shade (two sizes) • lamp with grasscloth shade on sale (I’d like this for our kitchen counter)
To sum it up:
If you want your home to feel warm, welcoming, and thoughtfully designed, lamps are essential. They soften rooms, improve function, and add layers of beauty that overhead lighting alone simply can’t achieve.
