Wearing Denim: Petite Women Over 50 Tips

At 5’1″ and 67 years old, I love the versatility of denim! Denim transcends the trends. Here are ways I am wearing denim without buying anything new. There are some affiliate links where I may receive a small commission at no extra cost to you.

Opt for Tailored Fits And A “Column” Of Color

When it comes to jeans, choose styles that are tailored to your petite frame. Look for petite sizes or brands that offer shorter inseams to avoid overwhelming your silhouette. I like Madewell as they come in petite, tall, regular, and plus sizes.

Chico’s no iron linen blouse with a 3/4 sleeve length • white slight flare jeans jeweled flat sandals (I bought these to wear with dresses, too). This is a good outfit for when you want to wear pants even though it may be hot.

Consider wearing the same color on top and bottom to elongate your frame.

Experiment with Different Washes

Play with various denim washes to add dimension to your outfits. Dark wash petite jeans are great for a sophisticated vibe, while lighter washes can create a more casual feel.

Here I am wearing a chambray shortsleeved shirt (similar on sale) with dark wash straight leg jeans and really comfortable sandals with low heels. I like these shelf bra white cotton camisoles from Amazon. A sweater thrown over my shoulders is for cooler temps indoors.

For petite clothing, I think Banana Republic and Madewell have the best jeans. Look for jeans to the ankle or slightly cropped above the ankle. Bootcut jeans are great for shorter women, too.

Layer with Denim Jackets

A denim jacket is a wardrobe essential that can elevate any outfit. Choose a cropped or fitted style that doesn’t overwhelm your frame. Layer it over dresses, tops, or even other denim pieces for a trendy double-denim look.

This classic denim jacket is on sale. The Tuckernuck Royal Shirtdress comes in lots of patterns and comes to the knee for petites. The one I’m wearing is no longer available.

You probably have a classic white jeans jacket like this one in your closet. Tommy Bahamas Blue linen eyelet dress is shorter in regular sizes (this is a small). The leather sneakers with memory foam inserts are from Madewell.

Try Denim Skirts and Dresses

Don’t overlook denim skirts and dresses, which can be stylish alternatives to jeans. Denim dresses offer a one-and-done outfit solution. Pair them with sandals, sneakers ballet flats for a casual daytime look.

The comfortable J. Crew chambray dress is a couple of years old. I usually roll up the sleeves. This one by Quince is similar. Madewell woven leather ballet flats.

Accessorize

Accessories can enhance your denim outfits. You can buy a similar stone pendant to the one I am wearing on Etsy.

Wear what makes you feel comfortable and stylish!

Ultimately, the key to rocking denim as a petite woman over 50 is confidence. Wear what makes you feel comfortable and stylish, and don’t be afraid to experiment with different looks from your own wardrobe..

I love all your looks! And that column of color… even though I’m not at all petite…. I love wearing all one color! You look so good in white! Which is perfect for Florida!

  3. Mary Ann I love all your looks here. I’m kind of in between a petite and a regular so sometimes I go with the petite sizes. I love those white jeans from Madewell and put them in my cart. I love the style and hem. That denim dress is adorable. I wish they still had it. You inspired me now to get my little denim jackets out!

  4. MA, love all your cute denim looks. I’m fall in between petite and regular sizes and it can be tough. Denim dresses and denim jackets over dresses are be a great alternative for embracing denim. I’m tempted to order the J.Crew dress … totally adorable. You always look polished and pulled together … and at least 5’5″! Thanks for the great round up. xo

Thank you for the column on How to Wear Denim-Over 50. These are really great tips and so simple! Now, why didn’t I think of that! You look great in every picture.
The only thing I would not try is a medium blue denim top on medium blue denim bottom. It looks too much like “Shawshank Redemption”. Thanks again.

  8. Nan, Odessa, DE says:

Denim is heavy weight on my body. Too heavy for summer. Would you use it often in the summer?
How do I identify the lighter weight denim with online shopping?

    1. Good question!
I think I would stick to white jeans and denim dresses/skirts for summer (at least here in Florida) but I do like jeans with some stretch for travel (and airplanes that can get chilly). Annie’s post has some lighter weight denim jeans.
Anyway, It’s still cooler in many parts of the country and even in Los Angeles it’s in the 50s at night. I am going there soon.

      1. Great tips Mary Ann. I love you in the all white look with the ponytail. Such a great look for you and Florida!
