Shopping Your Closet For Fall Fashion Trends 2025

It can be fun to follow Fall fashion trends to give you ideas to create fresh outfits from what you may already have in your closet. This reflects your personal style but can feel modern.

We are taking an extended trip to Europe right now, and I shopped my closet first for what to pack. Then, I filled in with a couple of things to make my whole suitcase feel updated.

We have friends joining us today and I’m excited to see what they recommend for Autumn inspiration. Their links are at the end of the post.

Here are key pieces for Fall Fashion Trends for women over 50. Some of these are carryovers from last year as trends usually take time to take hold.

Polka Dot Print

Polka dots are back, baby! You must have some in your closet?

I’ve paired this old Anthro skirt (similar one here) with a fresh thicker tee from Banana Republic, black booties, black belt and a great quilted Italian leather crossbody from Quince.

Barn Jackets Are Going Strong

This is my second barn jacket from Sezane. I have a blue cotton one, too that I bought in Paris.

Suede Will Jacket • my own vintage silk scarf • lime tee shirtflair Mother jeanssuede booties • Quince sunglassesApple watch band

Suede is also “in”.

Silk Scarves

“In 2025, silk and satin scarves are a major trend, worn as headscarves, tied around bags, belted around waists, or draped around necks for a touch of quiet luxury.” I’m so happy about this as I have several scarves that I’ve saved over the years. How about you?

In fact, this Hermes scarf that Howard gave me several years ago was the jumping off point for the colors (mostly neutrals with some pops) that I packed for four weeks in Europe.

Here are some other beautiful silk scarves…

The Return of Color: Lime Green

According to Vogue’s Top Fall Color Trends 2025 (that includes mocha brown, powder pink and chili pepper red) lime green is hot. I’ve always liked it.

J. Crew Lime green cable knit cardigan (size medium) • matching tee boot cut blue jeans booties sunglasses • my convertible leather crossbody Longchamp bag is from a few years ago…this one is similar

Animal Prints

This sweater set can be dressed up or worn with jeans.

Light cashmere cardiganleopard cashmere shell (both on sale–I bought mediums)• slip skirt • classic Chanel bag (20 years old! — you can buy it on the Real Real) Or new at Chanel kitten heels (that are more comfortable than regular heels and look a little dressy) • sunglasses

Denim On Denim Skirt Western Outfit

I’ve been admiring this western denim on denim maxi skirt outfit from Tuckernuck. Denim maxi and midi skirts are on trend this season.

So cute with the dark brown suede boots, the maxi skirt and denim button down shirt can be worn separately.

Something Red And A Trench For Layering

This is a great trench with attached belt from Athleta (good for travel). I’m wearing it with an old red and black silk scarf, Quince black jeans, Italian leather quilted crossbody bag and comfortable Birdies red suede ballet flats.

Any of these “trends” sound good to you?

You look terrific in your bold lime green. Although our coloring and size looks the same, I would look like I had the flu in lime. You look very stylish and that can be difficult for us petite women. I have to shorten petite pants and jeans! I often buy crops as they are full length on me. I’m looking forward to seeing your photos of your trip. Enjoy and be safe on your travels.

  7. I’m kicking myself for donating my red barn jacket because it was out of style and now they are trending. Love polka dots and why do I not have any in my wardrobe. Better remedy that.
I look forward to pictures of your travels. I’m picking up my puppy today so I won’t be traveling anytime soon. So, your pics will have to suffice.

  10. I love polka dots! It happens to be one of the few patterns that I love! I love the chartreusy greens that are popular this year as well in the big sea of brown! You are lucky you can still wear pointy toe heels! They look so nice on you! Have fun in Spain!

I love your choices, Mary Ann, and concur! You’ve shown some of my favorites here, and yes, hooray for the return of silk scarves!

  12. I love your scarves, but I have never mastered the art of tying them. Can you recommend an on line tutorial?

    1. I just “wing” it Cathy. I think the less fussy the better. And with the Hermes scarf, I tied it to show the pattern that I wanted …the green leaves.

  13. Annie Diamond says:

Mary Ann! As always you will be so stylish on your extended trip to Paris and wherever else you travel! Love that skirt! And who knew lime green is a trending color? I had no idea! And you look so good in that color!
    Safe travels my dear friend!
