Thanks for hanging in there for the
completion of Tommy’s room for
The One Room Challenge
(where twenty bloggers make over a room in six weeks).
The goals for our college aged son’s room were to make it:
• comfortable
• somewhat masculine
• classic but fresh with a modern country vibe
• not spend a lot of money and repurpose furnishings

I might be over-doing the photos here…
but Liana, who made the pillows (I love that girl),
took so many good shots, I couldn’t decide.
To recap, the vintage French travel poster
was a starting point.
I revamped an IKEA pendant to give it more
of an industrial feel
(total cost about $75).
Here is the somewhat blah before photo for comparison.
The ticking stripe curtains (an extra long shower curtain)
were bought on Etsy and I already had the convex mirror.
I simply spray painted the lamps black and hand painted
the chests with Annie Sloan chalk paint.
Tommy is at school in Gainesville, Florida,
but his buddy, Todd, sent him the above photo.
Here is another before photo…
And after…
I arranged the little succulents and shells myself.
The 24″ square pillows are made with printed linen from
China Seas (Nitik II) and the bolster is Belgium linen
with Duralee trim (Whisker Border).
The wall mirror is from IKEA.
Even though this wasn’t part of the challenge,
here is Tommy’s attached
This room is on its way to San Francisco.
If you haven’t heard, we are moving there for
a fun job opportunity for my husband.
If you haven’t heard, we are moving there for

We found an apartment on Russian Hill
with great bay views on a picturesque
(but unfortunately noisy) cable car line.
I just bought a “white noise machine” on
Amazon and will let you know how it works.

Love your style. Can't wait to follow your adventures in SF. Decorating and otherwise! Best, Beth C.

Everything is executed perfectly! Love those pillows on the bed and the mirror above! Such a tailored space!
Mary Ann,
You completely hit it out of the park! LOVE. IT. ALL. The painted lamps are totally transformed, the pendant (unbelievable how good that looks), the fabric choices – all good. And just so you know, you can NEVER have too many pictures! HA! M.
Your style always blows me away Mary Ann, I love this room. The styling is perfect and the choice of bedding and the ticking stripe is perfect. I can't believe youre moving!!!!!! I am sorry, but San Fran, are you kidding? What a fun adventure ahead and I wish you the best in the transition. Your belongings will make your new digs feel like home instantly! Great job!

Well, I'd say mission accomplished!! Black, white and wood is my favorite look and you've done it flawlessly! I love it! ….and that bathroom – yes! Good luck w/the move. I know what you mean. There is a possibility of us moving in the works….bittersweet…both exciting, sad and scary. Can't wait to see your place in San Fran, one of my favorite towns!
Love your work!
Looks really great! The bedding alone makes a huge difference. And painting the chests really tied it all in. Love it!
Kristen @ pursuingvintage.com
Of course I could not love this room more! The neutral vibe has my name on it and those pillows….dying…along with the ticking. Everything about it is so damn awesome. I know you are sad to move but I can't wait to see what you do with your new space:)
You are the cutest thing! I am in love with this room. You hit every objective on your list. The pillows are fantastic.Every adventure has its positives and negatives. I really do want to hear about your white noise machine. Embrace the change. Personally, I can't wait to watch your life in SF.
It's just perfect!! Looks amazing…well done! I am so looking forward to seeing your new digs in SF!
Love this room! You did a fantastic job – what was the source for the round mirror over the bed?
Perfect! Love the colors and every little detail and I am thinking that this should replicate well in your new place! You do such a great job giving a sophisticated look to a comfortable room, hope your son loves it and good luck in getting your new place pulled together!
This is beautiful. It looks terrific and restful while still being so sophisticated. Love it!
Mary Ann, you've done it again! Love the black & white, so classic, and warmed up with the shades and art. The perfect masculine space. It's been so fun to see the transformation of this home, and I look forward to your next one and your adventures in San Francisco. Best wishes as you make the move.
The Ikea light is really cool! The room is stunning-you are so talented!
What a terrific bedroom! The poster bed and that light fixture are really fabulous. Love the fabrics and how you handled the tv wall too. So many ideas here!
Mary Ann,
Tommy's room is great. I love the simplicity and style. It's amazing how adding the bed posts and pillow ticking just made the bed. I also like the way the chests turned out…they have a modern feel, but the details are classic. Great job. I know it will be fun to hear from you once you've moved and get settled, it will be like a virtual tour of San Francisco while you makeover your apartment.
xo,
Karen
WOW! That room would make me move back in with you forever if I were Tommy. Love every detail of it 🙂
It's your gorgeous signature style, Mary Ann! I love the Ikea pendant, and your diys on the dressers and lamps turned out amazing!! Beautiful details throughout! Oh, and that gallery wall around the tv is perfection, too!
This is so beautiful! I'm very, very impressed! Congrats on the move and best of luck!
Oh my my! Fantastic job. One of the most impressive things for me is how you embraced the " big black box" that we all have and try to hide. Your wall of photos is genius. Flat screens are very much a part of our lives now and you made this wall simply wonderful. Excellent.

Beautiful room and I'd be sad to leave as well. My favorites is the overhead light and the shams. We almost used that trim in another colorway for a client but the $$ got a bit too much with the amount we needed for the particular project. Love it!
Wonderful Mary Ann! Yes, I love spray paint too… And the bathroom: well, it's gorgeous too.
btw: I slept every night with white noise when we lived on Columbus Ave. in NYC. It DOES help!
Truly an amazing job, Mary Ann. I love every single thing you have done here. I know that your son is happy.

Mary Ann, of course the room is stunning! Love that poster of Normandy. May need to find that myself since I just visited there. Oh, I can't wait to see your new digs.
Mary Ann,
You did a fantastic job on this room…love the pillows and the chests came out great. At least you get to bring the room with you after all your hard work!
I purchased a white noise machine from Amazon a few years ago. (due to neighbor noise) Wonder if it's the same one? 🙂 I wear ear plugs too. If only I could sleep through stuff like my husband!
Linda in S.D.
Looks amazing, love all the neutral tones, you made it look so sophisticated!
Tommy must have been so surprised…it looks wonderful….love the black and white theme and the pillows are amazing…
Fabulous, I love this! Everything works so well!!!
What a relaxing space!
Best,
Karolyn
Perfect classy man's room Mary Ann!!!! This is a great example of how you could add elegance to a man's room. Love how the windows look like wall art when the blinds are down! But overall, I would not change a thing in this space! Can't wait to see how this space gets 'transferred' to your new digs! More rooms and challenges for you to tackle which I know, you will handle with grace! Good luck with the move dear! And congratulations for a job well done!
Well….I don't even need to look at all the other room to know that yours is my favorite and definitely the winner! It is nothing short of perfect and I want it to be in my house! Can I steal all your ideas for my guest bedroom? I keep saying the same thing, but EVERY detail is perfection! Liana's pillows are to die for, she IS the pillow queen! LOVE…LOVE…LOVE it! But the best photo is of you sitting in the completed room! I can't wait to see your new SF digs…I know they will be just as wonderful and then some! Thank you for all your inspiring posts! xoxo Gail
