How To Decorate With Mirrors To Easily Enhance Your Home
Here’s why and how to decorate with mirrors in your home. Just about every room can use one. Decorative mirrors add light, depth, style, and personality—without clutter and often without major expense.
Let’s discuss how to decorate with mirrors and show some examples.

Mirrors Make a Room Feel Bigger
Mirrors reflect space and create the illusion of depth which can be especially helpful in small living rooms, bedrooms, hallways, and bathrooms. And they can reflect the warm glow of candle light in a dining room.

Strategic Placement Tips
Some good places to hang a mirror are:
- Across from a window, especially if there is a view
- Behind a dining table
- At the end of a narrow hallway or in a stairwell
- Above a mantel or console (and especially nice when layered with art)
- In an entry, functional and welcoming
- In rooms with limited windows

This antique French mirror that we hung in the stairwell was in my parent’s house growing up. It reflects daylight into shadowed areas.
Decorative Mirrors Act as Art
I find that when a couple cannot agree on art, they can usually agree on a mirror.
Style examples from which to choose (something for everyone):
- Gold leaf, wood, black iron, rattan
- Arched, round, oversized rectangular
- Modern minimal
- Traditional
- Coastal
- Vintage-inspired

Budget-Friendly Possibilities
Decorative mirrors can be found at all different price points from valuable antiques to Walmart, IKEA and thrift stores. Our kids took a Century Furniture mirror that we bought over 30 years ago to use in their new home (so the price was right for them)!

The Finishing Touch Every Room Needs
- Consider the versatility of decorative mirrors
- Remember to “shop your home” first
- Reconsider that blank wall…would a mirror look nice there?
- Don’t overdo mirrors in a room. One or two is enough. Unless you intentionally want it to look like Versailles.

Mirrors really are that secret weapon that makes everything else look better!

Mirrors are my favorite wall accessory for all the reasons you mention! And I never tire of them….terrific post, Mary Ann!
Good morning! As usual, it’s always a good day when I see CCH in my inbox! I also noticed you have a new look, very chic! Love all the mirrors, just wish there was a place in my house for a new one but I love all the ones I have!
You have some great mirrors, Gail!
Hi Mary Ann
What a great post! I started a mirror post awhile back and never finished it. You have inspired me. You have so many pretty mirrors in your home and you have rounded up some great ones!
I love the carved wooden one that you have in your living room, Cindy!
Love, this so timely as I am in need of a mirror for my bedroom! Do you think you can use a round mirror over a bedroom dresser? I usually see rectangular.
Yes…I have used round over a dresser…it will look great. You can put something to balance it on either side like two lamps or a lamp and a plant… or just the mirror.
