Home Studios Near the Beach and Refreshing Salad

September 14, 2012 By Mary Ann Pickett 34 Comments

Recently, I visited my old buddy, Carol in
La Jolla (near San Diego), California.
This is the ocean view from her front deck.
After a long walk on the beach, we had an
inexpensive lunch at Caroline’s Seaside Café.
It’s located on the University of California’s Oceanography campus but open to everyone, not just students.  What beautiful architecture and view!

Then, we headed back to Carol and Mark’s house.
This is Mark’s writer’s studio in the back garden.
It is a one room cottage built in Canada by Summerwood Products.
Their style unit is the Sonoma (10′ x 12′) and costs $10k, plus approximately $18k to build & outfit.
It is a peaceful, zen-like room and is where Mark wrote his book “Lead From the Heart” regarding advice for successful business management.
This is Carol’s atelier in the garage.  She has been busy!
Even though her studio is in the garage, it comes with fresh ocean breezes and this view just outside!

You know it’s a good sign when someone asks you for the recipe…like after I made this easy Herb and Feta Salad for my sister.  It’s a refreshing addition to your menu.

I know exactly where that is! My parents have a condo at La Costa and live there during the summers – so we go to La Jolla to shop and eat.

Carol, I wonder if perhaps you know my mother in law and her mother… Mary Ruth (grandmother in law), who lives in the "Umbrella House" right above the Wedding Bowl?

    Mary Ann,

Many years ago when I was in my early 20's I worked for a doctor in downtown La Jolla. The best part of the job was looking at that view from his office. The sunsets were gorgeous. Looks like your friend's view isn't too shabby either!

Looks like your friend lives up on Mt. Soledad and, if so, how lucky are they? As a resident of San Diego I learned something i.e. Caroline's Cafe…think I'll stop by there this weekend. Thanks!

Gorgeous paintings and such a beautiful artist studio! How wonderful to reside in the seaside community of La Jolla. One of our favorite spots.. there seems to be bluffs everywhere, each with the perfect view!! I don't know how those University students get any studying in that kind of environment!

    Enjoy your weekend!

Oh- My heart just longs for the ocean all the time. I moved from Florida when I married MyHero and am landlocked in the midwest. We are on the Bay but it is not the "Big Water".
Your friend's place is beautiful-as are her artworks and I love that little backyard studio. xo Diana
