Four Steps: Modern Boho L.A. Style

September 26, 2019 By Mary Ann Pickett 11 Comments

Last week, I visited our daughter, Alexandra in Southern California. I love spending time with her, talking, eating, walking Chief and styling her new apartment. Here’s how we achieved her Modern Boho L.A. Style.

Four Steps: Modern Boho L.A. Style

1. Vintage and Flea Market Finds

These are things with meaning like family photos, books, and flea market finds, like in Alexandra’s case, vintage globes.

The oil painting came from the Long Beach, CA flea market, the sconces from the Alameda, CA flea market and the industrial dining table from the Brooklyn flea market.

2. Modern Furniture

The knock-off/affordable Eames molded dining chairs are from Overstock. The curtains and rods are from IKEA. She is using her West Elm sofa from her previous apartment as a banquette. Since it is a little lower, I told her to put some pillows underneath the cushions…and the white chairs are a bit low so it works.

White IKEA bookcases flank the window. The leather Jensen chair is from Universal Furniture.

A modern dark blue sectional, a white oval coffee table and round mirror is mixed with a vintage desk. Chief is right at home here!

The tripod lamp is a great price right now.

3. House Plants

You might have noticed by now that every room has living plants cleaning the air and adding greenery. Trés boho. The rolling cart from IKEA is super cheap. So is the olive plant from Trader Joe’s, giving this rental a European kitchen feel. Did you see my 15 Favorite Fall Things At Trader Joe’s?

4. White Paint

The walls feel fresh with Benjamin Moore White Dove. More favorite interior paints are here.

Art

Looking at the photo above you can see that she needs some art over the sectional. Since the bookshelves have a lot going on, one or two simple pieces above the sofa would look nice… such as…

Or, she could frame some art from her vacation using Framebridge. It’s easy.

Affordable Rug

Alexandra could also use an 8 x 10′ rug in the living room.

Those four simple steps achieved a Modern Boho L.A. Style. Decorating is always a  work in progress in my opinion…keeps it fun and fresh.

Have any good plans for the weekend? Ours will be low keyed since we have been gone. Just going to enjoy spending time with Howard (he’s been traveling for work) and the great Fall weather in S.F.

Take care!

I am working on upgrading my boho-house. I have BM White Dove on the walls, and lots of wood. I am trying to figure out curtains/drapes to go with the white dove walls. Where did you get hers? Thanks, and I love the style, Tanya

I love Ali’s style in fashion and her home. She is authentic and knows her own style (with a little help from mom) I think that is rare today. She isn’t afraid to buy what she loves and knows how to put it together. Loved this post!!!

How special to have a daughter—and a daughter who seeks your counsel. Your daughter’s apartment looks young, airy and personal. A great foundation for layering over time. What about playing with scale and going big with art over the sofa? I bought a print from a photographer and had her enlarge (using a commercial service for this) to a 3′ x 5′ canvas. It’s a picture of the Milky Way shot in my home state of Oklahoma and it pleases me no end. Maybe your daughter has a special photograph she has taken on her travels or walkabouts in LA that could go Big! Just a thought. Love that Chief goes from big city to SF chill with his own sense of style.

Your daughter’s apartment is charming. It’s amazing how you helped her turn a rental into what looks like a custom home. Olive plants at Trader’s, who knew? Love it! Lucky daughter you have.

Thanks, Celia. The olive plant from Trader Joe’s comes in a plastic pot that you might want to upgrade.
