Hello! I don’t think you need to buy a lot to update your Fall wardrobe…just a few key pieces to rotate in to make everything feel fresh! This post was written while we were living in San Francisco and it still applies for 2022!
Fall fashion is a popular topic each year with Cindy, Annie, and me.
Here are the four items that I have added to my closet: a classic white tuxedo blouse, new fun loafers, a cashmere poncho, and a pull-on slip skirt (that I wore this summer but will show you how I will wear it for Fall).
If you are new here…I live in San Francisco, which can be a little dressier, but mostly I want to be classic and casual while running around town and seeing decorating clients. Plus, I am turning 65 soon…so I want to be comfortable but not too “old lady.”
1. Tuxedo Blouse
I really like this Thomas Mason for J. Crew tuxedo blouse. A little pricier but nice quality and it can make even your old jeans look polished! I’m wearing a size 6 regular. Says it’s a slim fit.
2. Comfort Loafer
This is my fourth pair of Birdies as I wear them like crazy! The cheetah tassels are fun.
3. Light Cashmere Poncho
I wear this comfortable sweater poncho walking Chief and as a light layer at night or in a restaurant. It would be great on an airplane, too. Comes in lots of colors and is on sale right now. Oh…should I buy another color? You could wear it as a heavy scarf over a coat, too.
4. Pull-on Slip Skirt
This is a versatile slip skirt that you can dress up or down. I wore it with a tee-shirt in August and here are looks for October and November.
This is with a chambray shirt that I’ve had for years, black booties, black pearls, and a sturdy Marc Jacobs crossbody bag from Nordstrom Rack (which I’ve had for a while and love).
This is the skirt with a tee shirt and cashmere crewneck sweater from J. Crew (I have this in three colors…so soft). The necklace is old…made by my daughter with Venetian glass beads.
I’m wearing my fave Madewell flat booties!

Love all these ideas, MA! I just ordered the slip on skirt. Hope I can make it look as good as you do. Birdie’s are on my list … why don’t I have them yet? They look so stylish, comfortable … and they’re well priced. Your tuxedo blouse is a must-have too. Can you believe we’re talking about fall?! Can’t wait to see what everyone else is sharing! xo

after you betrayed your age I can only be amazed. Fabulous.
Mary Ann Pickett says
Thanks, Rena!! Check out the first collage where I am with Chief and you can see that the poncho is longer on me. You can spin it around however you like…it’s basically a long rectangle with a hold for the head. Try it…you can return it. I think you will like it though.
Mary Ann Pickett says
PS…I just ordered another in camel. I plan to wear it with a black turtleneck and my black jeans.

Hi Mary Ann….I love and follow your blog. The wedding was beautiful and I enjoyed your sharing with us. I’m thinking of ordering the jcrew poncho. On their web page, the poncho looks quite adequate yet lightweight coverage. In your picture it looks quite sparse…only hitting elbow sleeve length on you. I know you are petite. I am 5’7” and wondering if it would be a good fit. Can you talk about the fit of this piece? Thank you so much.

I like all of the items you’ve selected to feature. I’m looking for a cashmere poncho and this one, on sale, at a great price. I have a pair of birdies loafers and I feel like I’m wearing slippers when I wear them.
You sure don’t look anywhere close to 65.

Mary Ann Pickett says
Thanks, Karen! I’d love to see a photo of you in the poncho and Birdies!!
Virginia Rolfs says
Hi Mary Ann,
Love you skinny jeans where did you get them?
Mary Ann Pickett says
Banana Republic… great quality and price (especially on sale) and they have some stretch.
Virginia Rolfs says
thank you.
Sharon Bourgeois says
You look amazing, Mary Ann. I really love your personal style!
Mary Ann Pickett says
Thanks, Sharon!!

Hi Mary Ann – well, if this is what turning 65 looks like, I’m on the right track by following your blog (I’m 61)! It’s amazing to me that I am in my sixties (seriously, when did that happen??), but looking at all you lovely ladies it’s clear that it really is just a number and we can look (and hopefully feel) great for a very long time to come!
Mary Ann Pickett says
Absolutely just a number, Patricia…ha…Until I look in my magnifying mirror.
Kareen says
Very pretty – as always. Love them all, especially the tuxedo shirt. Perfect!
Mary Ann Pickett says
Thanks, Kareen!!!
Suzy says
YOU are adorable!!!!!
Definitely know how to look great!
LOVE your suggestions…. !

Thanks, Suzy 🙂

Hi new to following you and love the Birdies with the tassels. Went to just “look” at them and they only had my size left. Thought it was a sign and ordered them. Lol. I have a question you have probably answered a million times, where do you get the lovely necklaces?
Mary Ann Pickett says
Kandy, you will like those Birdies. My necklaces are mostly old. The one I am wearing with the tuxedo blouse came from a “retirement” sale at a shop down on Union Street. I do like to look at the jewelry at Anthropologie though (especially on sale).

I love the look of the J.Crew poncho and plan to order several colors. I am petite…5’1″ and love the idea of ponchos, but every time I try one on, it looks WAY to big and seems to swollow me up. Since this one will be a lighter weight and appears shorter, I think it will be perfect.
Mary Ann Pickett says
I’m only 5’1″ too Judy…so you can see how it will look on you. But I think it looks great on taller people too. But you are right. It won’t “swallow” you up.
Jennifer says
You look fabulous! I need those Birdies with the tassel. I can’t believe I missed them! Perfect for my wardrobe. Thanks for inviting me to join you ladies.
Mary Ann Pickett says
Thanks, Jennifer! Off to read your post!!
Holly says
Just adorable outfits! Love the poncho in every color and that tuxedo shirt is perfect! A girl can never have enough white blouses! Good to see Chief too, such a little cutie-pie.
Mary Ann Pickett says
Chief is one of the reasons I need comfortable shoes, Holly!
SUSAN BLAKEY says
Mary Ann, these are all such great pieces and I love how you’ve styled them! I may have to try a slip skirt now… 😉
Mary Ann Pickett says
Thanks, Susan. The slip skirts are surprizingly flattering too! Not too clingy. Off to read your post!
cindy says
How did I miss that blouse? I love it. I need another pair of birdies and I love those! You look darling in every single outfit. You are so right that we only need a few things to update our closet. I don’t think you want to throw out your skinny jeans. You look fabulous in them!
Mary Ann Pickett says
Oh I forget to mention that I like the skinny jeans when I wear something looser or on tucked in on top.
Mary Ann Pickett says
“UN-tucked” on top.
Julie Bowlick says
I just found you! You look great! I struggle with wanting to tuck shirts in since it seems to be such a trend….to tuck or not to tuck? What’s your thought in this for women our age? Thanks
Mary Ann Pickett says
I do both but if the top is oversized, I don’t tuck in (and wear with slimmer pants). With this tuxedo shirt, I will do both. Like I might tuck in the shirt with more flaired jeans.
Candy says
Loving the tuxedo shirt and so happy to see that ponchos are still going strong! Enjoyed this post so much.
Mary Ann Pickett says
Thanks, Candy…what should be my second poncho color?? They are on sale.
Marianne says
I would be very happy to look as great as you when I get to turn 65, love your blog.
Mary Ann Pickett says
Thanks…I needed that, Marianne!
