Container gardens can provide a pop of color and interest…just like jewelry for your garden. Today, for this Project Design, we have some amazing designers/gardeners illustrating their ideas. We have regulars, Cindy and Annie, along with Debra from 5th and State, Kelley from Kelley and Co.and Janine from Happy Happy Nester.
Since I live in a 1920’s high rise apartment in San Francisco, my container gardening is limited. But my friend/client Melba (thanks, Melba) was just on vacation in Nantucket and took some great inspirational photos. I’m also including creative ideas that I spotted at Roger’s Gardens. So, let’s get started…
Window Boxes
What makes these spectacular?
- two or more colors
- varying heights (including twigs and moss)
- lushly planted flowers
Pots Staggered on Stairs and Grouped Together
The alternating colors look great!
Unusual Containers
Can you see the plants in the metal toolbox on the table in this pretty dining vignette at Roger’s Gardens?
Look at the variety of herbs planted in an old iron garden chair…
Wine barrel planters have a rustic charm…

Mary Ann, your posts are always a breath of fresh air! I especially liked the post about window boxes and wish I had the talent to create wonderful ones like those shown. I live near Atlanta, and there’s an outstanding series of gardens on a mountainside in Ballground, GA. created by master landscape gardener, James Gibbs. The gardens are called..What else? … Gibbs Gardens and the staff at Gibbs changes the window and container plantings monthly, giving ideas and inspiration. I’m not too proud to copy them!

I just wish I lived at the beach so they would thrive like all things living do at the beach!
There’s nothing like a stroll through Roger’s Gardens to inspire no matter what season. Thanks for the ideas no matter where they’re from, I’m ready to replace some of the winter-weary plants in my containers. Perfect timing.
