When Cindy, Annie and I were talking about what we wear when working from home…it seems I feel productive in casual but put together attire. I tend to wear jeans and washable, non-iron tops, slippers inside and sneakers outside. Living in a city, people do wear workout clothes…just not all day during the week.
There are beautiful sites within walking distance around San Francisco (and we keep 6 feet apart and wear masks). When I get home from walking, I like to take a shower, get dressed and put on minimal makeup.
Here’s one of my handsome walking companions. I also walk with our son, Tommy. He is staying with us (after he self quarantined for several weeks in L.A.). He lives alone in L.A. …and with working from home, too, …we wanted him with us. One of the bright spots of the stay at home order is having him here now. We’ve been taking turns cooking and cleaning (and he bought a bunch of groceries, carried them in and unpacked them).
Khaki and Black and Slippers
Black Long-sleeved Tee shirt • Similar Khakis (half-price sale) • I love these $20 slippers from Target. You can see if they still have your size in black. I also have them in the caramel color. They are such a great deal and comfortable.
Denim on Denim And Slipper-like Loafers
My photo is a little blurry here as I took this from a video that I recently posted on Instagram stories.
Similar denim shirt • Birdie loafers that have memory foam quilted inserts so they feel like slippers (check out all their perfect “working from home” shoes) • jeans with some stretch for comfort (40% off)
Silk Cotton Duster (40% off) • Basic Tee Shirt • Van’s Slipons • Paige black jeans
Face Protection
Sort of a fact of life for us. Here are some masks made by friends of mine in the apparel business that you can order.
Indigo and Palm • Blue Bandana • Midnight Dot
No Rush To Get Out of Your PJ’s?
Recently, my client, Wendy called me to see if we could FaceTime to check the placement of a large rug in her newly painted living room. Well, it was 10 am and I was still in my pajamas but I said OK…since I knew it would be hard to move it again once the heavy furniture was placed on top. It was embarrassing, but oh well.
These are my favorite P.J.’s. They would make great Mother’s Day presents, too.
Eberjey pajamas are SO SOFT (thanks, Laura)! A splurge but on sale now.
The J. Crew cotton pajamas stay cool with hot flashes. They are classic and you feel covered up enough to wear around house guests (when we can have them).
Even though there are lots of sales, I’m not interested in spending much right now. But I did just buy this 40% off Madewell T-shirt for $20 (lots to choose from and free shipping if you sign up with their insider’s program).
A little Spring color to wear with jeans!
What am I going to do with my hair color?? I’m going to experiment with a glaze by Madison Reed. My problem is I only have grey at my temples…so if I go natural (gasp), I will look like the Bride of Frankenstein. Anyone else have this problem? I will let you know how it goes.
What My Friends Are Wearing At Home
Go see what Cindy Hattersley in Monterey County, CA and Annie Diamond in Connecticut are wearing while working from home. We all have our own styles.
Stay safe and positive!

HI Mary Ann, Love your style and that cute profile pic at top! Found you from Katherine’s blog hop! Pinned a few stair railing ideas! We updated to wrought iron, but now my stain looks like 1980’s oak! Ugh! I agree I love that my boys will be home in CO for their finals!

Hi Mary Ann–
Regarding the Eberjey pajamas–is the fabric a thin or thick jersey? I live in Arizona and can wear the Cool Nights by Soma sleepwear–wondering if the Eberjey is similar. Thanks so much!
Mary Ann Pickett says
Sort of a thinner jersey but not see-through. I have my own personal “desert-weather” occasionally during the night and these are great.

One of the few…I am working outside the home ( healthcare professional) used to be able to dress smart casual for patient consults but things have changed and back to scrubs! At least the materials, colours and styles have changed over thirty years! Also nothing is easier to care for as I provide my own. Love your stay home looks as, with the exception of the slippers, those outfits would be my ‘mode quotidien’ ! We have a nephew hunkered down in Oakland who is hoping for a bit more freedom soon as he would eventually like to make his way home to Canada ( work and girlfriend in Oakland) his brother is in Princeton N.J…more worry about him and his family due to proximity to NYC.
So glad you are well and have your son with you, stay safe, stay strong and prayers for all south of our border.
Mary Ann Pickett says
Yes, scrubs seem to have gotten cuter and they look comfortable. THANK YOU for helping us all out. Your nephew is just across the bay from us. It’s a bit gloomy today…but tomorrow is supposed to be sunny and beautiful! Thanks for commenting. You know my mom grew up in Alberta.

You’re adorable! Feeling confident that no one will knock at the front door I’ve taken slovenly to a new level. But, your at-home wardrobe is perfect for my normal everyday life … when that life resumes. Glad your son is with you, good for Chief to have additional staff. xo
Mary Ann Pickett says
Ha! you are so funny, Juliet. I think Chief is exhausted from all the walks!

So glad I found your blog and those of your collaborators! The posts have been a lifesaver during this unusual time. The different takes around a theme are so interesting! I think you have hit a good balance between fashion, interior design and recipes. And who doesn’t love those views of San Francisco?
Mary Ann Pickett says
Thanks, Mary Ellen. We are going to have some great recipes next Tuesday with a progressive dinner!

Hi Mary Ann,
Cute work from home outfits!
Christopher’s Salon in Tiburon is offering hair color touch up kits for at home diy. Just enough for hair line and roots, the kits are $65 and include custom mixed color and easy instructions. Might work for you.
Best, Ellie
Mary Ann Pickett says
Thanks, Ellie. I’m so afraid of getting hair dye on everything. But I will see how desperate I get.

Hello Maryann, I will be honest, I am all about the comfy work from home look. I’ve always worked from home so after yoga I put on my work “uniform” typically another pair of yoga pants, a comfy shirt and a sweater to stay warm. In the summer, its a nice pair of shorts, and a comfy t-shirt, the weather here in the summer is hot, hot, hot and humid.
I am sure it is wonderful to have your son at home, enjoy your time with him. Love your pup! Mine are by my side all day.
Mary Ann Pickett says
That sounds perfect too!
Mary Ann says
Hi Mary Ann,love reading your ideas for design, and looking good at home . Thank you for a blog that is not all about clothes to buy.

Hi Mary Ann, I try not to write about fashion too often, but surprisingly, they get some of the best traffic! My sister and I were talking, that we aren’t buying much with the current situation…but I think everyone should have my $20 slippers from Target 🙂
JoannA says
I was pleased to see your outfits. I get dressed every day, as usual. Seeing so many blog posts with leggings, joggers and Jammies as their quarantine outfits is depressing. I think for our sanity, and our partner, we should shower, do our hair, and dress everyday.
What a beautiful building! The Contessa mentioned it was the Palace of Fine Arts. How did I miss that while in SF?
Stay safe!
Mary Ann Pickett says
That’s a good point about dressing for those around you…even a small family. And it makes me feel better, too. Yes, that’s the Palace of Fine Arts…a peaceful little spot in the Marina.
Wendy says
Thank you for helping me in your PJ’s! You looked fine to me. :). Love the blog.
Mary Ann Pickett says
I’m so glad you didn’t care, Wendy!!

I need some new jeans so just ordered your recommended pair. I can relate on the hair color issue. I’ve been coloring my hair so long that I’m just now finding out how much gray I have.
Mary Ann Pickett says
I think you will like those jeans, Cathy!
LA CONTESSA says
I use to feed the ducks at THE PALACE OF FINE ARTS right where you took this PHOTO!
GOOD LUCK WITH THE HAIR THING!!!!!!!
HAPPY TO HEAR YOUR SON IS WITH YOU!

Yes, Tommy and I just took a great long walk this morning.

I think you look fab and your fearless team mate looks quite dashing in his red vest. Kudos to you and Howard for raising such a delightful, thoughtful son. I was almost in tears at the “unpacking” word! We’ve been ordering since March 7. The unpacking and putting away of things as we plan for our worst—maybe at the end of the month or so—is a bit overwhelming at times. Thanks for the SF views. So beautiful.
Mary Ann Pickett says
Tommy is a good man. I hope we are in the “worst” and it’s flattening out. But I guess we will still have lots of changes…wearing masks still in public, etc. Thanks so much for commenting!
Rose says
Hi Mary Ann—a few questions since I’m on the short side also. Did you have problems with the sleeve and bottom pant lengths on the pjs? I usually shy away from regular size pjs because they involve some shortening which is a pain for someone without a sewing machine. That means a trip to the alteration shop just for pjs, which seems crazy. Petite size pjs are hard to come by too. On the two styles you recommend, just wondering if you would mind sharing what size you purchased. Normally I wear a 6 petite or small petite. I’ve never heard of the Eberjey brand of pjs but according to their size chart I would take a medium. Does that sound right?
Also, do you have a favorite brand(s) of jeans which works for your height? What sizing do you usually go with?
I loved all the comfy but “put together” outfits you showcased today. Thank you.
Mary Ann Pickett says
Rose,
I usually get the cropped version of the PJ’s with Eberjey in a small and the J. Crew Pjs come in Petite, too. I love Banana REpublic jeans (great sale) in the petites…there is a link.
Thank you!

You look so fabulous in that black cardigan and the vans. Sadly as you know my work from home look is not as polished as yours. You always look so put together even in your PJ’s. I need to step up my game!
