FAMILY ROOM MAKEOVER IN THREE HOURS

June 28, 2016 By Mary Ann Pickett Leave a Comment

This family room/kitchen in Orange County, California had great bones to start, but the furniture arrangement was not conversational.  No bueno.
How do you put a drink down?
With only three hours to make adjustments to my client’s space, here is what we did…
1.  The two large, matching sofas would look better facing each other
2.  The heavy, dark art was the wrong vibe for the beachy feel.
3.  To bring this sofa in closer, I looked for something elsewhere in the home that we could use behind as a sofa table.
 4.  Then, we removed everything off the shelves and I restyled them below.

5.  Next, I styled her coffee table and mentioned that I wished the reclaimed wood table was rectangular instead of round for this space…and guess what?  Since it was fairly new, Pottery Barn agreed to let her exchange it for the rectangular one.
6.  I brought the console, lamp and accessories in from another room…as well as two RH arm chairs from the kitchen table.
7.  So, now we need fun, cushy pillows (I gave her some recommendations) and more family photos to expand this gallery wall.
This is pretty but the chairs were a tight fit for every day so it was perfect that we could use the RH chairs in the adjacent family room where they were the right size.
8.  I took the dark frame off (she may wish to paint it lighter) the oil painting in the family room and used it here on the empty focal point wall.
9.  Then, I put the white console underneath it with a plant and grabbed some oranges from her garden (this IS California) for the wooden bowl.

10.  The top of her black cupboard was accessorized.
OK…at this point I was getting short on time… I had driven up from San Diego and I still had to drive to L.A.

But before I left…
11.  Her kitchen window got some love 🙂
What could we do with your place in a few hours?
