Hello! I wrote this newsletter on the long car ride from San Diego back to San Francisco yesterday. Howard, my sister, and I just had a much needed, mini three-day vacation on the charming Coronado island off the coast of San Diego. It was a really good way to refresh while still being careful and avoiding any crowded places.
I’m Excited To Tell You About Seven Good Things!
Coronado Island, San Diego
Loews Coronado Hotel
We stayed at the Loews, which is walking distance to the beach, and dogs are accepted. We hung out at the pool (socially distanced) and enjoyed good Mexican food at the pool restaurant. The weather was perfect.
Hotel Del Coronado
Our son, Tommy came down from Los Angeles for one night and we had a drink at the iconic “Hotel Del.” Here we are with my sister, Teresa.
Patriotic Homes
There are lots of cute homes on Coronado Island.
You can buy the banner here.
Blackberry Smash
My cousin, Janice sent this photo and recipe for a Blackberry Smash. I want to make this!
Honey Garlic Glazed Salmon with Garlic, Asparagus, and Black Rice
Our son, Tommy has made this recipe several times. I like how he layered it over asparagus and black rice. Have you tried black rice? It’s delicious!
My Fav Comfortable Cole Haan Sandals for 75% off
I could walk miles in these comfortable sandals and they are on major sale now!
So I just purchased another perforated pair for $29.97!
Easy Eye Makeup
Since we are wearing masks in public, I am mostly just wearing make-up on my eyes.
Concealer (brightens all-around your eyes) • Revlon Waterproof Eyebrow Pencil Stays on all day and at $6.99 the price isn’t bad! • Benefit Bad Girl Bang Mascara (I buy the mini version and use about one per month). This really lengthens and fills in my lashes.
And those are Seven Favorite Things!
I have to say that I was a bit on edge when I was at my mom’s house. It was hard to not be able to hug her…and Howard and I wore masks around her.
On Thursday, we have a really delicious progressive menu for a cook-out with some of my fav bloggers. Summer dishes to try next weekend.
Thanks for a glimpse of the Hotel Del … my favorite hotel on my favorite island. We missed our annual trip last year due to the Del’s renovations and hope to return when they’re complete later this summer. Coronado has the most charming homes and is the best little city for walking … the scenery never gets old. I hope Miguel’s Mexican restaurant has survived in the time of COVID … their patio is my favorite spot, near my favorite hotel, on my favorite island! Welcome back to the Bay Area … I’ll be trying these recipes. xo
Miguels was still there, Juliet!
Thanks for the hot tip on the shoes! I have a blue suede pair that I love! So I ordered the same perforated ones as you. In Canada, they are $45 but shipping is free so its a really good deal.
The hotel in Coronado — I had looked at booking there this past spring (pre COVID of course!) but saw that the hotel was under renovation. Could you tell if those renovations are finished? Some day when it is safe to travel again, I might look at booking it for a quick trip.
We stayed at the Loews but it looked like the Hotel Del Coronado was open and had guests.
Mary Ann,
This was a fun and informative post. I’ve printed the salmon recipe. It sounds delicious. Great start to summer.
xo,
Karen
Thanks, Karen!!
It looks like a wonderful weekend. I love Coronado and San Diego too! I pinned the blackberry smash, that is my kind of cocktail.
Have a wonderful evening.
I’m going to make it this weekend, Elizabeth!
Glad you had fun. It must have been so nice to get out of the city! That blackberry smash looks amazing! Tommy must take after his dad another great chef in the fam!
Glad you had such a beautiful get away in San Diego. Coronado is such a great place and the festive houses all decked out for the 4th reminds me of Balboa Island. But then it’s always nice to come home feeling refreshed.
Blackberry Smash ooh sounds good! I make salmon at least once a week so I will definitely give Tommy’s recipe a try. I have black rice too!
Looks like you had a nice getaway. I just love looking at the houses in Coronado…when we were there on Friday we were driving down a street close to the beach and there was a large new construction house nearing completion…white with black casement windows. I was dying it was so gorgeous!
Linda
I missed that house, Linda. We were so close to each other!
I love the beige dress you are wearing in the first picture. Any info on that? Looks like a lovely getaway. We all need that right now.
My husband brought it back from India last year from a business trip. It’s called a kurta. You can find some online at fabindia.com

Reviews say the sandals run large. Your thoughts?
Lowes in NOLA also allows dogs, even large ones.
I normally wear a 7 and bought a 7. With the strap you can tighten it.
