Hello! I’ve been looking forward to showing you how I style my casually classic jackets and coats for the cooler weather here in San Francisco and in Southern California (where most of my family lives). It’s especially fun as I am joining three other over 50 stylish ladies. Their links are at the end of the post.
I didn’t buy anything new for this post. These jackets and coats are basics that work for lots of body types: moto jacket, quilted field jacket, animal print coat, and a single-breasted black coat that can be dressed up or down.
Motorcycle Jacket
I bought this timeless leather jacket a few years ago and it’s so versatile. This is at my sister’s house in San Diego. I borrowed her scarf…actually she gave it to me!
I’m wearing it with Banana Republic leggings (I want another pair and they are on sale), cheetah print Van’s Slip-on sneakers, and an older Coach bag (similar).
Quilted Field Jacket
My husband, Howard bought this Barbour jacket for me when he was on a trip to London a few years ago.
I’m wearing it with a Hermes scarf (also from Howard), a basic white button-down, Banana Republic skinny jeans, and J. Crew Low Heeled Booties.
Timeless Animal Print Coat
This leopard print coat from Zara is about five years old. I find cute reasonably priced coats at Zara. I’m wearing a J. Crew cashmere sweater (on sale), black jeans, and comfortable sneakers. Perfect for walking Chief in the City.
I really like this Marc Jacobs crossbody purse 50% off at Nordstrom Rack…what a deal!
Single Breasted Bouclé Coat
This is another Zara coat. I got the necklace for my birthday in October from the Banana Republic but it’s already sold out. The bootcut jeans are from the Gap. Sold out now. But these are similar in a kick fit. The block-heeled booties are from Madewell.

When I click on the boot, cut jeans picture, it says sold out. What is the name of the color wash and style that you are wearing so I can look for it in the future?
Oh what a bummer as they are a good fit. They are boot but and it was a medium wash. I wonder if the Gap outlet has them now?
What about these is you bought them longer? https://rstyle.me/+J07I4f38wxq_vDsQ09V5hA
What size is your Madewell leather jacket? Wondering if it’s true to size.
Small
You will look great in anything you wear, but that is because you know your look and style! I love the boot cut jeans, the skinny jeans look good but now when I see the difference….these are on point!
Thanks, Gayle!!
Great post-you ladies all look great and I love all the styling tips. You look great in every one! My favorite look is the black Zara with that necklace! Wow!
Thanks so much, Barb!
Hi Mary Ann,
I love all your looks, especially the black coat with the boot cut jeans. You look very classy and citified!
I love boot cut jeans, I think they are so flattering. I just got a couple of new pair at Macys. Skinny jeans might be “out” but they are still marketing them at every retailer I know! I think we’re mature enough to know what works and wear what we like at this point in our lives.
I wish I lived in a place where I could do more walking in town, window shopping while all bundled up is a favorite past-time of mine! Each one of your jackets would be perfect!
Have a great Thanksgiving.
XO Heidi
Just curious what length you order in the Gap jeans? Regular or short? Thanks!
I got the short. And I have to wear a bit of a block heel with them…but I think they look better that way “boot cut”.
I love all your outfits Mary Ann. Perfection. I have a few questions. Can’t actually tell what you have under the leather jacket to go with the leggings? Do you have a longer sweater/top that covered your bum? Just wondering if you wear something longer over those leggings or not necessary because they’re not skin tight? Also, how did you size on the boot cut jeans? I’m short but have long legs and short-waisted. I’ve never ordered jeans from Gap so I have no idea how they run.
Please consider a post on petite sleepwear—pajamas-short and long versions and/or nightgowns. It’s a struggle to find pjs that I’m not stepping on and sleeves too long.
Rose, with the leather jacket I am wearing the Banana Republic leggings in a size 8 petite (one size up). So I am not covering my rear. I just have a t-shirt under the jacket. With the boot cut jeans I ordered a petite size 8 (I am heavier right now) but you could order two sizes. I am short-waisted too.
Thanks for the idea about petite sleepwear…I have some ideas!
As always, you look fabulously SF chic! I see several things I’d love to have, especially the GAP boot cut jeans. I went to order them and they’re back ordered until Feb, 28. Seriously? You’ve styled every outfit perfectly!
Hi Mary Ann,
Well, we’re truly (finally) in jacket-wearing weather. I really like the ones you’ve shown us. I’m ready for the cooler weather and look forward to the upcoming holidays.
xo,
Karen
These are all darling on you! I love the boot cut jeans😀!
Mary Ann, Sorry Left a message earlier and for some reason -it didn’t go through.
I love the look with the black boucle jacket! The other Zara coat is darling too. I always find great coats there. The moto jacket also looks great on you with the scarf and I think I need those leggings- very flattering. You have the SF chic look down -casually elegant. Thanks for including me on this collaboration. Always love doing things with you gals. xoxo
Hi Mary Ann,
If you have a moment please can you tell me the name of the Banana Republic necklace you got for your birthday? It is so lovely, I am going to go on a deep dive search and see if i can find it.
Thank you,
Francesca
It was the amber resin beaded necklace…it comes up on google
I can always count on city chic from you! I love your stylish choices of sleek and textured pieces.
( Having a bit of trouble posting … you may receive a repeat. )
I can always count on a city chic look from you! I love the play of sleek and texture!
WOW, LYNNE…WHAT A GREAT COMPLIMENT!
Thank you Mary Ann for the post. Wonderful looks and ideas and I have that Marc Jacobs bag and it is a winner!
I love it too!
I was really enjoying your post until I got to the part that said skinny jeans are out, which is mostly what I have. I have really enjoyed the high waisted skinny jeans but I will keep that in mind when I buy a new pair.
Ha! I KNOW. That’s all I have too except for this one pair. It was in the NY Times and a few other places…we can ignore 🙂
Mary Ann, you look amazing in each outfit!!!
Thanks Kathy!!
Love all the looks you put together, but especially the black ensemble in the last photo. Is your necklace from Banana Republic? I think I have the same one. If skinny jeans are out I am in big trouble, that is mostly what I own. Oh well, I don’t always pay attention to trends. If it looks good on me that is all I care about lol.
Linda
Yes, it was from BR but now I see they are sold out. Let’s keep wearing our skinny jeans. I have some on now.
This is a great post , all you ladies look fabulous and gave me great ideas
to up my coat look .
Here in Montana we need coats , I just weeded out several coats to make
room for something new .
We might as well look good dashing about doing errands since that’s all we
can do .
Now for some up scale masks to match ….
I know…I think I am collecting masks now! That could be a fun post…masks to complement your outfit.
YOU will get LOADS of mileage out of COATS over THAT BRIDGE!!!
I wish I could pass on a few to YOU but I am MUCH BIGGER!
HOWARD gets an A for SHOPPING EFFORTS!!!

I would love ANY of your coats, Elizabeth…but I would have to cut off a foot or so 🙂
Mary Ann! You have the most sophisticated style…so prefect for city life in California! I love how you mix in a little animal print with your coat or accessories like a pair of Vans or a clutch! Those GAP jeans look amazing on you with that black coat! I tried to order a pair and they are back ordered….so I guess it’s skinny jeans for me for a bit longer!
xx
Oh no…that’s a bummer that they are backorder…especially since you can get the tall. Love your new coat.
I love every single one of these looks. I need to check out those jeans and I am going to order those banana leggings right now. You keep bragging about them. They must be good! I like that Marc Jacobs cross body too. It looks like it is ampler than most!
I had to get an 8 petite in the leggings…used to be a 6 :/ The crossbody bag is well made!
