Awesome Sunday in New York

It started at the Brooklyn Flea with..
my daughter, Alie and her room-mate, Shireen.
Shireen is from Texas so I bought this vintage cocktail tray for her.
Tacky? Maybe.
The food stalls are fabulous at this flea market.
In my exuberant feasting, I forgot to take photos… we split
a buttery lobster roll, giant home-made ice cream sandwich and fresh basil lemonade.

We purchased this industrial kitchen table for the girls…
made by Mr. Cool (aka John) above from salvaged barn wood.
It looks even better in person and has great metal detailed legs.
See Paul smiling in the back?  He has been refurbishing lighting like these
school house pendants for 28 years.  I want the one on the right.
Can I get it on my carry on?
Fun prints.  Kid’s room?
We stopped at a place called JUNK to look for more furniture for the girls’ apartment.
Signs all over say No Haggling …really?  For junk?
I thought this 60’s piece had potential as a television console
for that eclectic apartment (read Urban Outfitters) look…
dovetailed drawers and solid wood.
$199 (firm, don’t even go there).
Painted?
Vetoed.  What do you think?
After a fun day, Alie and I went to Buddakan back in Manhattan for dinner.
We shared dim sum for dinner.
The waiter recommended the edamame pot stickers…and they were amazingly flavorful.
On the walk back to the Bowery Hotel we stopped at Popbar
for a delicious banana gelato Popsicle dipped in dark chocolate.
Doesn’t New York have the most fun, innovative, delicious ….everything?

  1. What a great day! I really must get to the Brooklyn Flea. Funny, this summer I read an article about all of the … food (!) there.

As for that $199 console — the girls were crazy to nix that find. Love the Texas tray too.

  2. Love this post. I live so close and haven't been to any of those places. I think it's time.

No way I'd go $199. for the console.

  3. I love that – "no haggling" for junk! hahahaha! I agree!
I have never been to New York and I am so envious.
It looks like you had so much fun!
    Have a pretty day!

  4. What a wonderful weekend you and Alie had! The flea market looked like fun and the table you bought will be perfect with its great lines and wood.

I have been several times to the Buddakhan in Philly and love it. The popsicle beats any I've ever had!

  5. Hi Mary Ann – looks like a fun fun day you spent with your daughter. I'm like you, my daughter is now in her 20's so we enjoy shopping together, including flea markets. I love it!

  8. Looks like a perfect day to me! I have to put the Brooklyn market on my to-do list sometime. Isn't Buddakhan the best? We have one in Philadelphia and it's really great.

  9. Mary Anne,

This is making me miss NY like crazy…I can't wait to go to the Brooklyn Flea next time I'm there. Love the console…i think it looks great as is…can't wait to hear what you decide. Love those prints too. That Domino Sugar would look great in a kitchen…I can just picture that building. That last photo of Popbars is gorgeous…very fun! We usually hit Rice to Riches in this category. Enjoy!

The food definitely sounds better than what's available around our flea markets too….

  14. Looks like a ball! You must tell me next time you are on this coast so we can meet up! Sounds like this was a "business trip" though (the business of beautifying your daugthers digs) What a totally fun day!! Yes NY is hard to beat for the innovative amazing best of everything…wish I had more time to enjoy it. I always say people who come to visit do more than I do in that great city in a week than I do in an entire year. I used to live there and loved and it and even when my kids were younger went in 2 or 3 times a week but ever since this house started (yes that house again) its taken over my life. Hopefully I will again start enjoying the big apple sooner than later.

  15. Those pops are amazing. Sounds like a great day spent with your daughter.

  16. What a great day out. I love flea markets. Spent yesterday painting up 2 chairs I recently bought in the local Market for 25 euros.

  17. So envious! Just seeing the beautiful blue skies and the skyline in the background makes me want to go back (it was just soooo hot when we were there in July) … and those popsicles! What a fun day you all had 😉
