This is a fun Project Design for me as I get to pretend I have a garden again! Since I live in a 100-year-old high rise apartment in San Francisco, this is the time of year I miss having an outside space the most!
So it’s a treat to show you my clients, Laura and Paul’s outdoor living spaces along with Cindy and Annie and six other fabulous bloggers. Their links are at the end of the post and are sure to all be different and beautiful.
A Terraced California Garden Perfect For Entertaining
Laura and Paul enjoy entertaining outdoors. They use every space of their terraced garden on a northern California hillside.
First Level of the Garden — The Entrance
You walk down the stairs from the street level to this welcoming sitting area. There is beautiful Laura at her front door. Then, you walk through the first level of the home to the back deck.
The Upper Deck Secluded With Trees
There is another sitting area here on a deck with a fireplace.
So convenient as this is right off the kitchen.
On the upper level, there is also an intimate dining table and an outdoor grill area.
Lower Level with Pool and Custom Fire Pit
Below are a beautiful pool and jacuzzi.
And a fire pit made with custom iron log sculptures. Perfect for s’mores and conversation by the pool.
You can take the steps up through the house or through the garden to get back to the upper level. Isn’t this Terraced California Garden Perfect For Entertaining?!
Their fun, casual parties are legendary in the neighborhood!! 🙂 They have games like a life-sized Jenga!

Hi Mary Ann! This is beautiful. The terraces are just perfect and I love all the spots for entertaining.
The fire pit area is especially wonderful. Loving all the blue and white fabric and pillows too.
Thank you for sharing this…loads of great gardening ideas

Sorry I am late to the party. After babysitting for a rambunctious two-year-old yesterday and promptly went to bed when arriving home. You did an amazing job of styling this space. It has your signature style that everyone has come to love. The pretty blues bring all the brown to life. What a clever transformation. I bet your client loves you!!
Well done, Mary Ann! Beautiful, just beautiful. Jealous of your weather.

What a beautiful yard this is! I love the fireplace on the deck. Oh how I would love to sit out here with a glass of wine each evening 😉 So much inspiration!
Your friends terraced gardens are magnificent! I could “entertain” myself there all day! 😁 Love the fireplace sitting area with the treetop backdrop!
I know…so lovely.
~Mary Anne – I would love to know what that trellis system is (I can’t think of the right word right now) on the wall of the house where the roses are beginning to grow up. I just planted some clematis and that would be perfect for them. The terraced yard is lovely!
Hi Cynthia. Here is the trellis system we have: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Jakob-96-in-Wire-Rope-Plant-Trellis-System-30790-0000/204797905
It takes some effort to install – as my husband says, it requires “good planning, measuring and lots of patience”, but we are happy with the end result. It was a weekend project. Good luck!
Thanks for your reply, Laura!
Mary Ann – you are such a pleasure to work with and so very talented. Thank you for making our home look fabulous! xoxo
Thanks for letting me show it, Laura!! Everything was spotless and I knew you both put a lot of effort into it.
I love that firepit and you did an awesome job! Hope to see you in SF again sometime.
It’s great that it’s one of a kind!
What a great outdoor space. I love the terraced area and they’ve made everything very inviting for a relaxing visit to the great outdoors.

It’s fun how everyone is different.
Cindy this home is so lovely and what a beautiful setting. Love how they took advantage of the different levels to create a really unique and beautiful space. She has a great eye too. Love how everything is styles. What part of California do they live in? That outdoor fireplace is beautiful. This is a lot of fun seeing everyone’s spaces and gives me some ideas for my own. xo PS I would give up the outdoor space to have your views!!
Hey Kim, you called me Cindy? haha! They are in the East Bay. I have to say the weather is great and so are the views today.
