How to transition from a toddler to a teen bedroom:
First, The Bed! A twin mattress is 74″ long, the same as a full mattress. So, if you are going to buy your teen a bigger bed, it’s better to go with a queen at 80″ long.
I made the mistake of purchasing a full sized bed long ago (we also had a short-lived bunk bed phase when Tommy was little–but we were living in Paris and his room was the size of a large closet).
Wait! What was I talking about? The queen-sized bed for a teen bedroom…someday this could be a guest room. You experienced moms know.
Jack is already 5 feet eleven inches! Here is his teen bedroom now with his new queen-sized bed (from World Market on super sale now).
I thought about moving the hand weight set out of the room for the photo…for about five seconds!
Secondly, Get Your Teen’s Opinion Jack was in on all the decisions: style, color, art. This was one of the art options given. The California flag is from Etsy. It’s new but with a vintage wash.

Third, Freshen with Paint For a new look, we used Benjamin Moore Sterling.
Fourth, Organization This leaves a clear path to the closet. There is no reason for clothes to be on the floor 🙂 with industrial wall hooks from World Market. We also installed a full-length IKEA mirror and Organic Edge Shelf for display.
Fifth, A Space to Study is important for a teen bedroom. Now there is elbow room with this World Market industrial desk and Black Leather Chair. There is also a Dry Erase World Map from Target that his mom framed for him.
And a new, Tall Chest of Drawers in a painted black finish so it wasn’t all too matchy.
This ought to last this young teen through college…and beyond. He deserves it. He’s a hardworking student (I saw some of his scary homework)!

It looks great! Putting the mirror behind the door is genius–it puts that dead space to use.
We went with Ikea’s Hemnes daybed for our kid. Storage below; pulls out to queen size, or pushes in to twin.
Wow…how versatile. I need to check that out.
