Shouldn’t your bedroom feel fresh, peaceful and welcoming?
Here is my client, Melina’s bedroom before we made some updates. Although she had the Ralph Lauren duvet cover for a few years…it was in good shape and she likes the pattern. So, we decided to keep the duvet and the end tables, as well.
Step One: Fresh paint: This is Benjamin Moore Sterling.
Step Two: replace the overhead ceiling light with
this pretty Circa fixture in Sheffield silver.
Step Three: a new tall, upholstered headboard and base feels plush and “hotel-like.” Also, since the base is upholstered, it meant we could eliminate the skirt. The bed is on sale right now.
Step Four: We freshened up the existing classic lamps with linen drum shades from Restoration Hardware. The glass is good in a small bedroom as it takes up less space visually.
Step Five: We added crisp hotel linen sheets from Restoration Hardware and the Belgian linen diamond quilt and shams from Pottery Barn. I have the same quilt. It washes so nicely–especially given that we let Chief on the bed.
Step Six: We splurged on this custom striéd velvet pillow. It has micro-welting and kravet trim that ties in the sand/gray colors
Step Seven: Vertical beveled mirrors on either side of the bed were added to enlarge the space.
Step Eight: A bench at the end of the bed provides a nice place to take your shoes on and off. It’s from Restoration Hardware.
Thanks, Melina for letting me take photos of your pretty bedroom.
When you are going for a “refresh” consider using what you can keep and incorporate new elements.

Hi Mary Ann, This is beautiful. Do you have the PB diamond quilt in ivory or white? I’m trying to decide which would be better with white sheets. And, do you have a plain down comforter underneath the PB diamond quilt, or another white quilt? I’m referring to the picture of your beautiful bed with my questions. Thank you.

Mine is in sand.

Love the mirrors behind the lamps. I did that in another clients home and it was a hard sell. However once completed she loved them. Such a pretty refresh. What lucky clients to have you!!

So beautiful, Mary Ann! It looks so light and calming with just a few changes. But then you are the genius of room makeovers! The pretty duvet cover that she had, looks so much better with the other new linens! Great job!

Wonderful transformation without replacing everything, I think it looks great!

It is gorgeous. I love the velvet pillow. It is my favorite piece – nice splurge.
Question on the comforter – can you wash it without it shrinking? I have a Pottery Barn cotton quilt that was perfect when I got it (meaning I could tuck it in on 3 sides and still had room to pull it up at the head…until I washed it. I didn’t even dry it, just “air fluff”. I have to be able to wash white, so I’m on the hunt for something new.
Mary Ann says
I washed mine and it didn’t shrink, Susie…the PB one like above.

Thanks so much for the info and link to this quilt. I ordered it and I love it. And more importantly, my husband really, really likes it. He has thanked me for gettting it at least 3 times. 🤗

Just absolutely beautiful!! I have th pick-stitch quilt from pottery Barn and looks similar to the linen Belgian quilt you’ve used. I’m facing a frustrating problem of not having it be wide enough to cover my mattress! We made the unfortunate decision years ago to get a pillow top king mattress (which was uncomfortable so I bought a gel topper) making it a super thick mattress! It is so difficult to get anything wide enough and I hate seeing the mattress hanging under my quilt😭…….any suggestions for this problem?? I’m sure I’m not the only one!
Also, absolutely LOVE the custom grey/blue pillow on the bed! I want one too!!
Mary Ann says
This may seem crazy, Brenda, but have you tried putting the quilt the other way so that it’s shorter coming up to the pillows? Or else you could find a bigger quilt and fold the PB one at the end, of course.

Relatively small changes and yet it looks so different, absolutely fabulous, which really shows what a great interior designer you are. I love that you kept so many things, just updated and reworked them. Brilliant.
Mary Ann says
You are so sweet, Brenda.

We’re about to refresh i.e. update our bedroom. Wall color is, of course, the first priority! The almost-mustard yellow has got to go…am looking for a “neutral” white. New lamps for the bedside for sure! It is true that, in a sense, it doesn’t take too much to totally change the feeling here. Love the lighter feel throughout this room !
Mary Ann says
Thanks so much, Libby.
