Dear Design Enthusiast: We want your opinion.
Which lamp shade treatment looks best on Debbie’s powder room sconces?
1. Square Off White Linen Shade
2. Glass Hurricane
3. Round White Shade
The Scalamandré Pillemente Toile wallpaper was one of my favorite
products when I worked for Scalamandré in Florida.
It comes in beautiful colorways and in linen and silk fabrics.
While we are at Debbie’s house, check out her living room book case display.
She incorporates “breathing space” on the shelves.
With book shelf composition, it is important to have balance and not to over crowd. I prefer to eliminate “drug store” paper backed books or at least move them to shelves where they are not the focal point.
She breaks up the books with artwork and artifacts.
Digressing here. Last week, we celebrated Claire’s birthday with a little
girlfriends dinner at my house.
Back to the dilemma…
What do you think?
Glass hurricane, square or round shade?
Glass hurricane, square or round shade?
Best wishes,
Mary Ann
I vote for the glass ones! I love them against the wallpaper. You can see the wallpaper thru them and they look a little modern. Very pretty!
I love the glass hurricanes. It does not distract from the gorgeous wallpaper and adds a little bling.
I liked the square as soon as I saw them, but when I saw the hurricane I loved that too. Not so much the round. I think the square is more modern looking and the hurricane is in keeping with traditional design. The paper is lovely! How lucky that you worked there. I just bought an old Scalamandre book from Amazon that is amazing.
thanks for leaving a comment on my blog! I vote square and oh my goodness is that wallpaper divine! so nice to "meet" you!
Tessa
I vote for Glass.
Definitely #1! I love your blog and your home…esp. your beauty bedroom! All so pretty.
i like the square shades, it will create a softer light and won't be so bright.
I think I will trade off between the glass and the square shades. I like to change things up! Thanks for all of your helpful comments.
I really like the square shade. Just saw your house featured on 6th street design school and it is absolutely stunning!
i love the square shades. we have similar ones in our master bathroom. love the shape!…and thank you for your comment the other day on my blog!
ps. i was just in newport beach. LOVE it there!
Hmm that's a tough one. I generally love wall sconces with square lamp shades, but for that lamp, I really think the hurricane looks fantastic!
xo Linda
definitely the square.
and omg beeswax candles. 😀 love love love x
Definitely the square…love the look, Mary Ann!!
I like the square ones but I am really loving the sconce on the bookcase! Her bookshelves are fab looking!
My favorite is the hurricane lamp..but I'm sure you aren't surprised. :o) I think it shows off the lovely beeswax. I think hurricane lamps are so timeless. Love your gorgeous photos by the way!
I ADORE beeswax candles!
Donna @ Comin Home
My vote is for the glass, especially since everything else in the space is square.
My least fav is the round one, and I think my fav is the hurricane because it is so elegant, but I really like the square shade too. So depends on if you are wanting really elegant or just a traditional or modern look.
Blessings, Nellie
Loved your book case and table too. Both were
Very pretty
These are beautiful! I'm loving the second option too! Have a lovely day, Kellie xx
I like the square shades, the glass would be my second choice:)
Debbi @ the beach
The glass hurricane. Option #2. And I love how the books are placed and laid out on the shelf. They look great!!
My vote is for square linen! I love the idea of the beeswax!
Melissa
Well this is hard. I immediately liked the square and then I saw how clean the glass looks. i think I like glass the best. Love her wall paper and those shelves are beautifully arranged.

I love the square one, that's my favorite!
Happy Valentine's Day.
Hugs, Cindy
Oh I love the wallpaper. I like the hurricane lamps-the paper shows thru so pretty. such a lovely home with all the blue.
Ann
Glass needs constant cleaning due to fibers in the room. Square shade is best and shades soften the light so it isn't so glaring. Plus you can change out with different ones for holidays.
Happy Valentine's Day!
Glass love the wallpaper, and great bees wax tip.
Gorgeous!
Blue Monday, happy valentine's day!
Most definitely prefer the square. And I've used the Pillement toile in different colors – one of my favorites as well!! And the bookcases look beautiful!!
The glass I vote for!
Love from the netherlands
Square, if you can find white to pull in the white below. Thanks for sharing your blues.
Happy Blue Monday, Mary Ann.
Your home is gorgeous……Happy Valentine's Day.
Square . . . hands down!
Hi Mary Ann,
I hope you had enjoyed your weekend. The square shade seem to give a nicer and more intimate glow also they look more proportional to the size of the mirror. My vote goes to the square.
I love this room and the decor. I vote for the square shade 🙂
I agree..the square shades… thank you for sharing these lovely images of what you've been up to with us..xo Colette ~ Afrique du Sud
The square shade gets my vote!
I like the square shades the best! The hurricane ones would work too, because of the large scale. But my vote would definitely be for the sqaure shades!
I'm liking the square, but I can also appreciate the glass hurricane, as we don't see that everyday. It's a beautiful powder room!
Have a Happy Valentines Day!
Kelle
xx
i vote for the square! 🙂
Oh goodness – a test!!! EEK!!! I am so not good at this but I'd have to say the glass hurricanes – maybe because of the scale? I have no idea!!!!
Bookcases for me are always a challenge (as are all interior design things!) but the information was great – keep it coming!!
Looks like you had a wonderful time with your girlfriends – the table scape looks so pretty!!
Hands down the square for me, its traditional yet modern and fresh, the rounded one is too old fashioned and the glass one reeks of colonial….just love the squared with the gorgeous wallpaper, its a winning combination. Also admired the breathing space and careful attention to the placement of everything on the bookshelf..very well done!
I like the glass….just kind of simple and elegant with the timeless toile wallpaper. About those bookcases…I have the hardest time getting people to edit them and take off those dang paperbacks! WHY oh WHY are they saving paperbacks anyway???????
My vote is for the glass! Simple and doesn't take away from the beautiful sconce.
Pretty Bathroom!

I vote for the square shades and that wallpaper is gorgeous… love it!! xo
Hi, I follow you too :). Beautiful pics ^^

I really like the 2nd lamp & I also love the wallpaper behind it. Have a great weekend, dont work tooo hard 🙂
I like the glass or the square… probably in that order. I'm working on my bookshelves, this post really helps! Thanks!
The square shade, definitely. It gives such a crisp feel to the room. Clean lines balance out the feminine feel of the wallpaper.
The glass, hands down. It complements the candle look, plus it looks so much cleaner.
Glass or square. I agree with Kathysue on the 'why' for the glass, plus it adds length, where the shades seem to make the sconces look too small/short for the space. BUT – I also say the person who lives with the look has to decide what he/she likes.
I immediately thought square {like everyone else} but then I saw the glass hurricanes and they get my final vote!! If you keep the square shades then I would recommend an oval mirror. Thanks for sharing this beautiful bathroom!

I prefer the square shades.
SQUARE!

Where I would normally choose the square shades I feel like the beeswax candle (great idea by the way!) competes with them here and the whole thing feels 'busy' and too many things going on in one little light fixture. I vote for the glass hurricanes which to my eye are perfect, clean and fresh looking and show off the beautiful detail of the sconces which I like very much.
I like the square shades best. The round, pleated ones are so typical and the hurricanes, although lighter, are so traditional. I'm always up for a little modern thrown in to a traditional setting.
By all means, the square one! The glass hurricane is okay, but gets lost in the pattern of the wallpaper. The round ones provide neither counterpoint of form, nor do they reference the forms of the wall paper. The angles of the square shades reinforce the pagoda shape in the wallpaper pattern.
The sconces themselves, are perfect in the way they reference the flower forms in the wallpaper.
All stuff we know intuitively, I guess, but my inner design geek loves to bore people with "why this works" 🙂

I think Debbie could switch from the glass for summer to the square cloth for winter …like I do with pillows. Incidentally, they came without shades and I guess that could be option #4.
What a pretty bathroom and the wallpaper — yum. My vote was sqaure until I saw the strong rectangular lines of the mirror, which changes it — you don't have it pictured, but what about a drum shade? That would be my love.
I personally like the square shades the best. What a great idea to use beaswax on the candles!
Okay here it goes, honest opinion…. I like the glass shades with the wallpaper. It is very traditional and personally I think the glass allows the paper and the base of the sconces to be the star. The square looks contrived to me and I don't like it with the rectangle mirror. The white shades look like an inexpensive choice and a little typical. I vote for glass so you can see through to the paper and the base!! IMHO, Kathysue
The square shade gets my vote.
I prefer the square shades because I like that tailored look, but her home seems fairly traditional and the glass would work well.
I like the glass but they might not be the best in a bathroom. Cute post.
Love the square. Her home is gorgeous. Love the bookcases. Hugs, Marty
I am leaning towards the square shades. I absolutely LOVE that wallpaper!

I like the square shades the best.
