Why is a great denim jacket a wardrobe basic for women of all ages? They are:
- always in style, classic
- relatively affordable (especially from Gap)
- great for layering an outfit for an extra layer of warmth
- lightweight and versatile over pants or a dress
- can look casual yet pulled together
Now is the time to get a jean jacket if you don’t have one in your closet. Today, Cindy, Annie, our friend Sheri and I are discussing how to wear them and even make yours unique. Their links are at the end of the post.
Gap For Great Well-made, Affordable Denim
My blue jeans jacket is at least 10 years old from Gap and is a staple in my wardrobe. I believe they make the best denim jackets! It’s equally at home:

Usually, I roll the cuffs on this medium wash, classic denim jacket.

Mermade Brooklyn Embroidery
We have admired Annie’s hand embroidery done by Mermade Brooklyn.
The owner, Meredith, says: “My mother always taught me that details matter and I have taken this lesson to heart. I handle each piece with love and care and hope that it is used and enjoyed for many years.”
I sent my old beloved jacket to her with this mock-up that I did in Canva.

Here is her beautiful work after:

I love it! It’s so special now. Don’t you want her to create something personal for you or a loved one?

I was cleaning the extra tall hurricane-impact door windows for our recent Front Porch Decor post (that generated lots of discussion in the comments).

You can get in touch with Meredith at Mermade Brooklyn by messaging her on Instagram or by email at mermadebrooklyn@gmail.com for your own unique design.
Blue Indigo Denim Jackets Are Essential But So Are:
White Denim Jackets
I actually had to donate my old super fitted (#tootight and part of that is my fault with the Covid lbs. that never left) white denim jacket for this new one from Gap.

I like a white jacket with casual dresses like this light cotton wrap dress from Reistor for L. Crew. The espadrille wedge sandals are comfortable.

Let’s see what my friends are recommending for jeans jackets!

I just ordered the denim jacket from Gap. I am looking forward to a custom embroidery design from Mermade Brooklyn. It reminds me of my time as a teen, spending hours embroidering denim shirts for my dad and denim jackets for myself! So classic! Thank you for the info. and the links.
Oh, you will love her work, Kym.
Love denim jackets of all kinds! I’m on the busty side so I’ve found a nice long denim jacket with spandex balances out my top and bottom halves. (Chico’s usually has a few, here’s a sample: https://www.chicos.com/store/product/Elongated-Lightweight-Denim-Jacket/570332995?color=5857). Love your blog, happy Spring!
I’m featuring a Chico’s blouse tomorrow!
Thanks, Valletta!!
MA love jean jackets too. I have (embarrassing to admit) 3. One is a very lightweight–almost chambray in weight that wears nicely over dresses when you only want a lightweight jacket. No pockets in it either so less bulky. I still have regret for getting rid of a red wool “jean” jacket I got in the 90’s. I even had it altered for the right length in the arms.
That’s so funny that you still remember the red jacket.
I think you left some personal info on your email to Meredith might want to delete?
MA – you look so cute and stylish rocking your denim jackets. Love the embroidery by Meredith … so fun and unique. Don’t tell anyone but I have two white denim jackets … the same jacket in two sizes. What can I say, sometimes I need a little more room. The perspective of your front door with petite you standing in front of it is … well, wow. How did you get those windows cleaned?!!!! xo
Hi Mary Ann,
You look great in your jean jackets. Your custom created jacket is special. What fun that must had been putting the idea together and receiving the finished design.
Hi Mary Ann,
You look so cute in your all black with the denim jacket. Of course having Paris as a backdrop doesn’t hurt! You’ve styled everything so well and all your looks are super easy to duplicate. I’m ready for warmer weather and looking forward to exchanging my puffy coats for my denim ones!
xo Heidi
Great great style tips Mary Ann! And I love what Meredith did for your jacket! She is such a talent! I so appreciate your including me in this fun style round up – thank you! xoxo
Mary Ann
I love your white denim jacket! So cute over dresses!
I like seeing how you sent Meredith the idea for your jacket! That’s so clever! I sent a sketch, but I think your way is way better! It looks so cute! I love the letters!!!
I can see a baby jean jacket with Louisa’s name!!
Xx
I was thinking that too. If Meredith’s business ever calms down after this…she’s so good.
Hi Mary Ann. I loved the all black look. I have several jean jackets that I never wear because I’m tall and I think they cut me off in a weird way. This is a look that might not do that! You looked great in all the looks of course.
You are so lucky to be tall…but you could wear one color under your jacket, Lorrie.
I think my comment got eaten 🤣 so I’ll try again. Please delete if it’s a duplicate. You look amazing in the blue and white dress with the white denim jacket. Such a great look!
it looks so great on you !! so much fun to collaborate on a personal design!
thank you so much for including me here – such a great post.
Love your work! Bet you are going to be very busy.

Love your looks Mary Ann happy week!
Hi Mary Ann—Can you share what size you purchased in the jean jackets? I need a new denim jacket, thanks
Yes, Rose. A Petite Medium in the white and a small regular in the blue. (A petite medium in blue would be good too)
Thank you for this post. I absolutely love the embroidery you commissioned for your jacket and the styling tips from you and your friends were inspirational! A jean jacket is definitely a classic! BTW, I am a first time commenter but have been following your newsletter for some time:-)
