Hello! We spend a lot of time sleeping and recharging in our bedrooms, don’t we? That’s why it’s important to have a serene master bedroom. Here’s what I did to make ours a relaxing retreat in busy San Francisco.
Comfortable Bed
We purchased this black four poster bed several years ago from WS Home. The mattress is new and has a memory foam topper. My friend, Liana created the bed curtains for us when we first moved to San Francisco to make it a little “urban oasis.”
Good Reading Light
The crystal lamps are from Restoration Hardware with custom lamp shades from Cruel Mountain Designs.
A Plant or Fresh Flowers
That fern was $9.99 at the grocery store and is going strong.
Stool to Put On Your Shoes
The x bench from Wisteria is also Chief’s “leg up” to get on the bed. Is your dog allowed on your bed?
Soft Bed Linens
My husband, Howard mentioned how much he loves our new linen sheets.
We SCORED! Coyuchi gave me the organic linen chambray sheet set with an extra set of pillowcases. These were in exchange for hosting the fun pop-up event that you all were invited to last month with Cindy Hattersley and Kim Wheeler of Northern California Style.
These sheets come out of the cotton bag smelling fresh. For someone like me (getting hot flashes at night) these sheets seem to stay cool but are comfortably cozy. If the linen feel is not for you, they have other cotton sheet sets, too.
On the top right is the fabulous gift basket that we gave away. I just bought that pale pink organic cotton soft robe for a friend in the hospital (they have free gift wrapping in an artistic box). All of Coyuchi’s products are organic and top notch. You can read more about the eco-conscious company on Kim’s post here. I also bought a Turkish towel and a soft cotton T-shirt. Make sure you check out their sales, too.
Cozy Rug
This one is vintage from Turkey. We bought it on Etsy. Nice to have on cold mornings!
Uncluttered Space
This spot in our bedroom is temporarily tidy for now… why can’t it stay this way, Howard? I’m guilty too.
Soothing or Personal Art
I just purchased the giclée over the bed. It reminds me of the Bay Area fog that’s sometimes outside our windows. The walls are painted in my old standby Benjamin Moore White Dove.
And those are eight ways to create a serene master bedroom…here’s one more. We have a “white noise machine” from Amazon that we turn on every night to block some of the city noise… like the cable car that runs from 5:45 am until a little after midnight :/ Although, after five years living here, I don’t notice it so much anymore.
I’m in Southern California (there’s more on in Instagram stories). Yesterday, I did a little decorating at my son, Tommy’s new apartment in Newport Beach. We hung all his art. And I had a successful shopping trip to Homegoods for pillows and a decorative mirror. I also styled his bookcase (although I told him he could have done it himself if he read my last post 🙂 ). He made me a nice dinner and we watched part of the Grammy’s (love Dolly). Now I am at the Terranea with my husband but before I went to sleep last night, I got a text from Tommy “I appreciate you so much.”
Have a great week and thanks for visiting!

Maryann, your bedroom is such a beautiful, serene place, which is what every bedroom should be. I wish I could just plop your entire bedroom into our bedroom, I wouldn’t need to change a thing, except the view! Guess I’ll never have that gorgeous view!
How fun to help Tommy with his new apartment and what a treat that he made you dinner. You certainly trained him right. Hope you had a fabulous time at Terranea Resort.
Happy Valentine’s Day

Mary Ann,
Love your bedroom. I’ve always loved the lamps and am happy to have found the resource for the custom shades. Your account of helping to decorate your sons apartment took me back to the times I assisted with our 2 son’s apartments. It’s such a fun thing to do, and I was always honored they requested my assistance.
Enjoy your get away.

I know, Karen…it’s fun when it goes from “Clean up your room.” To…” can you help me decorate my apartment?”

I love your City apartment. So chic, yet warm and homey. This post has me dreaming of ideas for our new house furnishings. Your 4-poster bed is stunning . . . and I like that idea! Good kid you have!
Mary Ann says
A four poster is fun in a guest room too, Juliet.

Mary Ann says
Yes…and even better view out of the living room though, Debra.

Mary Ann, I always look forward to your posts and you don’t need to improve on anything…decorating is beautiful, style tips, and your recipes are great. You seem to find so many lovely decor items and I would like to know where you find so many pretty white vases. Thanks!
Mary Ann says
I love white vases, Karen…and although you should change the water–you don’t see murky water like you do with clear glass. The vase that the pink tulips are in is actually a marble toothbrush holder from HomeGoods! I find others at Target, CB2 and West Elm. Thanks for commenting!!
Mary Ann says
I just looked at the tulip vase again and it actually used to have a Fir candle in it that I used up and washed. But I do have a marble toothbrush holder that I use often too.

Thank you Mary Ann !

This is a lovely post….makes me want to give my own master a little punch up/re-do. And that late night text from Tommy was IT!!! So special from a loving son!

Takes so little to make us happy 🙂

Mary Ann your bedroom is lovely and in such a beautiful city but I had never considered the noise you have to contend with. Well, I guess there are always trade-offs. Isn’t it nice having sons that ask you to help them decorate and then are grateful for your help? It’s a very special feeling. I’ve done it many times and it brings a lot of joy. And how lucky you are to now be at Terranea!
Mary Ann says
Celia, I’ve helped my daughter decorate a lot…but my son didn’t care so much. Now he does 🙂 Yes, Terranea is gorgeous!
Jaye says
Looks so yummy and that view is unreal! Is your trim also BM Whie Dove?
Mary Ann says
Jaye, the trim was already painted before we moved in…it’s very close to White Dove just a tad darker and in a satin finish and our walls are flat.

Ahhhh I love Tommy what a great kid. Allie is pretty darn cute as well. I LOVE the coyuchi sheets too, and all your tips! Your bedroom looks so pretty!

Looks so inviting. I’ve always wanted linen sheets.
Mary Ann E. says
Linen sheets are WONDERFUL… I knew they had a reputation for lasting forever — wearing well, and getting softer over time — but, they’re definitely an investment. I was lucky to find a set on Target.com, and they were delicious after the very first wash. A real treat in summer, of course, but also great in cold Chicago winters.

I love your bedroom! The soft colors are very soothing, and it does seem like an urban oasis.
Long, long ago, and not in balmy SF, people used curtains around the bed as a way to keep warm, since bedrooms weren’t heated. We had a similar bed and put up mosquito netting for a kind of exotic, vacation vibe. However, that stuff needs to be washed all the time. Luckily it dries quickly. Eventually, we removed the baldaquin part of the bed and the netting because it was just too much.
As for sheets, I love antique sheets. All cotton, because they predate polyester. Organic, because they didn’t have chemicals back in the day. Amazing quality. Set the washer so that it doesn’t spin hard, and hang them, very wet, outside to dry–they almost don’t need ironing that way. Plus they smell divine when they’ve air-dried.
