Small stools, cubes, and ottomans provide extra seating or a place to rest your feet or set down a drink. Very versatile!
I think almost everyone could use one or two in their home. I’m showing where we are using our small stools in our new home in Florida.
This popular post “24 Small Stools To Update Your Look” has been republished (with new footstools, ottomans, and cubes) for 2022.
24 Small Stools To Update Your Look
Textured Stools
Little ottomans, like these woven x-base stools, can provide extra seating without taking up much space. Here they are in our last San Francisco home.
And now in the guest room in Florida.
The woven x-base stools in the guest room serve as a place to put on shoes and even as a luggage rack. So many uses!
Upholstered Stools
Here is my McGee and Co. cube from Target in San Francisco. They have an upscale look for the price.
And in Florida in the Ladies’ Loft.
Another example from a few years ago where we provided extra seating…Decorating with cubes and blue and white.
Round Footstools
Rustic Stools With A Global Vibe
We’ve had this Chinese stool for many years and they are popular again. Put one next to a bathtub, under a console, or in our case now, in front of the fireplace. Did you know you can find them on Etsy here, here, and here?

Mary Ann! I love seeing how you use the still from San Francisco in your new home! They are so versatile and useful too!
I always love your roundup posts Mary Ann. I always see something I would like to spend my $$$ on. I need one of those little reclaimed stools for my master when I get around to finishing it!
Great variety of stools, and cubes. I have two of the #13 from Pottery Barn, the Kirkham, in tufted leather stool. Have one, on each side of a chest in my living room, and they are beautiful, and comfortable.
Oh I love that one. I used them for a client in Marin county with small boys and they have held up well!
I thought I left a reply on this post but it must not have gone through. I love ottomans and stools for extra seating and I adore the textural pizazz your new stools add to your already gorgeous living room!
Always love, love, love the pictures of your SF apartment…my dream! Living in SF during the 60’s (gulp!) it was hoped we would return in our retirement. Alas, not meant to be. Wonder how you ‘snagged” such a lovely apartment and please excuse my rudeness for asking, but how much do you pay per month?
We found the apartment on Craigslist. We had to hire someone to paint the interiors as it was rented as is. I’m not comfortable saying what we pay in rent…but it’s a lot. We used to not have such a great view of Alcatraz…until one day I came home and they had chopped down some trees that were failing 🙂
Love the ballard

Mary Ann, I love little stools like these..so do my cats! Chief is a cutie too! I have been thinking I need to buy a pair of these when I move back into my house. The main sitting area is in front of a La Cantina door to the outside, but I want extra seating there. It’s so nice to have these for entertaining or game night too. Great idea for dinner by the tv too- new age TV trays! Especially love the black and white one and the rug version..and I need one for my closet. I cannot wait to see your beautiful home Mary Ann! Have a great weekend!
xoxo
I COLLECT THE LITTLE PETITE CHIEF SIZED FOOTSTOOLS!
Great for stacking books on!

Mary Ann,
These are great examples and I’m saving this post for future use.
Thank you for always sharing some great ideas.
xo,
Karen
Can you post a link for #2 the stools in your living room, the link you have currently doesn’t work. I love those stools and would like to purchase. Thanks so much!
Thanks so much! A few of the links were messed up. And I hope I corrected them!!
Lord it was like you are reading my mind! I need some stools for a project so I sent this link to her and said pick 2!!! Ha Ha how lazy can you get right:)
would love a pic of my dog like that…please let us know if she has a website!
Oh, let us know how you like the “Malibu Farm cookbook.”
Loving it so far, Sandra!!
Utterly charming. I love the idea of stools. I’m always putting my feet up on something. I also loved that table arrangement. I immediately pinned it. Must be seen. We had family in San Francisco, and it took them days before they were able to actually see the bridge! How can one come to San Francisco and not see “the bridge?”
You’re killing me! I was recently in San Francisco for the very first time and all I wanted was to see ‘that bridge’. We only had a short time and I barely got a good view of the bridge and you see it EVERY DAY (weather permitting). What a view and now with the chairs situated appropriately you can enjoy it! We’ll just have to make a return visit.
Another great post with helpful information. Thanks, Mary Ann!
I’m in NYC right now, Brenda but I really do appreciate the view in SF…especially without fog…like you mention 🙂
I have two ottomans that I bought soon after my divorce. They’re not very attractive, but you’ve inspired me to hunt down some fabric and cover them. I have an emotional attachment to them and won’t ever give them up. They’ve been extra seating and coffee tables a one time in their lives. I love the variety of stools you show – I’d mix and match a bunch!
I’m a huge Boston Terrier fan! Can’t wait to rescue another one.
I love ottomans. I especially like them tucked under a console table for interest. What a great roundup! I am going to bookmark this for future reference. You saved me a lot of work! I can’t wait to see your new arrangement!
All great choices. They do provide a quick update and some extra inexpensive seating for the holidays.
Great collection of stools. I could probably use a few in my home. LOVE that artwork!

This is such a great roundup Mary Ann. I love that leather one from CB2 for a masculine space I’m working on. Off to check it out, thank you!
I love that one too, Lisa!
I love all these little tuffets and could stare at that collection you gathered all day. I have problems for sure. The ink drawing is fantastic and so is your beautiful view! Hope you are well, friend. xox
What a fun selection of stools! It would be hard to pick a favorite. Think I’d spend way too much time in those chairs in your window looking at that gorgeous view.
Such a versatile piece and I love that they add more seating without taking up too much space – perfect for tucking under a console table too! Happy Monday, Mary Ann!
Love the ink portrait of Chief. Does your friend have a website? Would love to have my two pups done. Love your view!
Gail should have a website. She did a beautiful watercolor of our last dog. I will ask her.
What a view !! Your home is so lovely !
Thanks, Patricia!
Another thing that’s nice about them is that they don’t block lines of sight.
That is a good point!
I am a huge fan of small stools. They really went out of style for years and seemed so old fashioned.. but I love that they are back. My favorite is a needlepoint stool that my Mother had made: just the right height for feet, small enough to move around and perfect with a small square tray on it.
Sounds like a beautiful little foot stool!
Love all the choices you put here Mary Ann! Pinning it now for future reference!
Thanks, Vel…I was looking for little ottomans for a client and that’s how this list got started.
